The Chahoua Gecko (Mniarogekko chahoua) is an arboreal species from the humid forests of New Caledonia, and its enclosure must reflect that verticality. Front-opening glass terrariums designed for arboreal reptiles are the most popular choice among experienced keepers because they provide excellent visibility, hold humidity well when paired with a solid or partially screened top, and allow access from the front rather than from above. Reaching down into the enclosure from a top-opening lid mimics the approach of a predator and can stress arboreal geckos that instinctively associate overhead movement with danger.

Screen-sided or fully mesh enclosures are generally unsuitable for Chahouas in most indoor environments. While they provide outstanding ventilation, they cannot maintain the sustained humidity levels this species requires, and they allow heat to dissipate too rapidly. The exception is in tropical climates where ambient humidity and temperature already approximate the gecko's native conditions, but even there, misting schedules become burdensome as water evaporates almost immediately through the mesh walls.

PVC and molded plastic enclosures have become increasingly popular for Chahoua keepers who maintain multiple animals. These units are lightweight, stack efficiently, retain heat and humidity with minimal effort, and are easy to sanitize. The trade-off is reduced visibility compared to glass, which matters less in a large collection and more for a display animal in a living space. Many PVC enclosures come with built-in cord ports for lighting and heating equipment, which simplifies setup.

Bioactive vivariums represent the most naturalistic housing approach and are well suited to Chahouas. A bioactive setup uses a drainage layer, planted substrate with a microfauna cleanup crew, and live plants to create a self-sustaining micro-ecosystem within the enclosure. These systems buffer humidity fluctuations, process waste organically, and provide a visually striking habitat. They require more planning during initial setup but significantly reduce long-term maintenance once the system is established and cycling properly.

Dimensions and Space

An adult Chahoua Gecko requires a minimum enclosure size of 18 inches long by 18 inches deep by 24 inches tall, though larger is always preferable for this active, climbing species. The vertical dimension is more important than the footprint because Chahouas spend the overwhelming majority of their time on elevated perches, branches, and foliage rather than on the enclosure floor. An enclosure that is tall but narrow will serve this species far better than one that is wide but short.

For keepers who have the space and budget, upgrading to a 24 by 18 by 36 inch enclosure provides a dramatically improved quality of life. The additional height allows for more complex branching networks and vertical planting, creates a more pronounced temperature gradient from top to bottom, and gives the gecko room to display its full repertoire of climbing and leaping behavior. Chahouas housed in larger enclosures tend to be more active, more visible during evening hours, and less prone to the stress-related behaviors that can develop in cramped quarters.

Juvenile Chahouas should not be placed directly into a full-sized adult enclosure. A young gecko in an oversized space often struggles to locate its food, becomes stressed by the perceived exposure, and may fail to thrive. A smaller rearing enclosure of approximately 12 by 12 by 18 inches is appropriate for hatchlings and young juveniles up to roughly four months of age. As the animal grows and becomes more confident, it can be transitioned to its permanent adult enclosure.

Cohabitation is possible with Chahouas under specific conditions, but it demands a substantially larger enclosure and careful monitoring. A pair can be housed together in a minimum of 24 by 18 by 36 inches, with abundant visual barriers, multiple feeding stations, and separate hiding spots at different heights. Two males must never be housed together, as territorial aggression will result in injury. Even with a compatible pair, observing for signs of dominance stress, food guarding, or weight loss in the subordinate animal is an ongoing responsibility that not all keepers are prepared to undertake.

Substrate Options

Substrate choice for a Chahoua enclosure is driven by humidity retention, safety, and ease of maintenance. Because this species spends most of its time off the ground, the substrate's primary functional role is managing moisture levels and supporting the overall humidity cycle rather than providing a living surface for the gecko. That said, Chahouas do descend to the enclosure floor to forage, drink from pooled water, and occasionally sleep in low hides, so the substrate must be non-toxic and free of impaction risk.

A blend of organic topsoil and coconut fiber in a roughly 60:40 ratio is one of the most widely recommended substrates for Chahoua enclosures. This mixture holds moisture well without becoming waterlogged, supports live plant growth if the keeper chooses a bioactive approach, and has a natural appearance that complements the species' mossy, forest-floor aesthetic. The soil component should be free of fertilizers, pesticides, perlite, and vermiculite, all of which pose ingestion risks or chemical hazards.

For bioactive setups, the substrate is layered. A drainage layer of lightweight expanded clay aggregate or volcanic rock sits at the bottom, separated from the soil layer above by a fine mesh screen that prevents the substrate from sifting downward. Above the mesh goes the soil-coconut fiber blend, topped with a layer of leaf litter that provides cover for microfauna and mimics the forest floor. Springtails and tropical isopods are introduced as a cleanup crew to break down fecal matter, shed skin, and uneaten food, dramatically reducing the need for manual spot cleaning.

Paper towels or unprinted newspaper work as a utilitarian alternative for quarantine enclosures, veterinary recovery setups, or keepers who prioritize simplicity over aesthetics. These substrates are easy to replace entirely during cleaning, allow direct monitoring of droppings for health assessment, and eliminate any concern about ingestion. The trade-off is poor humidity retention, which means the keeper must compensate with more frequent misting and possibly a larger water feature to keep ambient humidity within range.

Climbing and Decor

An arboreal gecko without adequate climbing infrastructure is an arboreal gecko under chronic stress. Chahouas need a network of branches, cork bark pieces, and vertical surfaces that allow them to move freely through the upper and middle zones of the enclosure without ever touching the floor if they choose. The climbing structure should provide multiple pathways between levels so the gecko is never cornered or forced to cross open space without cover.

Cork bark is the single most versatile decor material for a Chahoua enclosure. Cork rounds and flats serve simultaneously as climbing surfaces, hiding spots, and humidity buffers. The rough, irregular texture of natural cork provides excellent grip for the gecko's lamellae, and the bark absorbs and slowly releases moisture during the humidity cycle, contributing to environmental stability. Cork bark tubes large enough for the gecko to enter and rest inside should be positioned at multiple heights to offer secure retreats at every level of the enclosure.

Live plants transform a Chahoua enclosure from a functional container into a thriving habitat. Pothos, philodendrons, bromeliads, ficus, and dracaena are all commonly used species that tolerate the warm, humid conditions of a gecko vivarium and provide broad leaves for the gecko to rest on and drink water droplets from. The structural complexity that plants add reduces stress, increases usable surface area, and creates the visual barriers that allow the gecko to feel hidden even in a glass-fronted enclosure. Securing plants in small pots or planting them directly into a bioactive substrate both work, though direct planting tends to produce more vigorous growth.

Artificial vines and silk plants can supplement or replace live plants for keepers who do not want to manage living vegetation. High-quality artificial plants provide some of the same visual barrier and resting-surface benefits, though they do not contribute to humidity regulation or air quality the way live plants do. If artificial plants are used, they should be rinsed and inspected regularly, as biofilm and mold can develop on their surfaces in the warm, moist environment. Mixing live and artificial elements is a common compromise that provides naturalistic complexity while reducing the gardening workload.

Lighting and Heating

Chahoua Geckos thrive at moderate temperatures that are lower than what many other reptile species require. The daytime ambient temperature in the enclosure should range from 72 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit, with a mild basking zone that does not exceed 80 degrees. Nighttime temperatures can drop to 65 to 70 degrees without issue, and in fact, this nocturnal temperature decline is physiologically beneficial and mimics the natural conditions of New Caledonian forests. Chronic exposure to temperatures above 82 degrees causes heat stress, appetite suppression, and can be fatal.

A low-wattage basking bulb or ceramic heat emitter positioned above one end of the enclosure creates the gentle thermal gradient that allows the gecko to thermoregulate. The heat source should be connected to a thermostat to prevent temperature spikes, particularly during seasonal ambient temperature changes in the room where the enclosure is kept. Overhead heating is preferable to under-tank heating for an arboreal species that rarely contacts the enclosure floor, as the warmest zone should be at the top where the animal spends its time.

The role of UVB lighting in Chahoua husbandry is a subject of ongoing discussion among keepers and veterinarians. Chahouas are crepuscular to nocturnal and do not bask in direct sunlight in the wild, which has led some keepers to conclude that UVB is unnecessary. However, mounting evidence suggests that low-level UVB exposure, provided by a shade-dweller or forest-canopy UVB bulb rated at two to seven percent output, supports vitamin D3 synthesis, calcium metabolism, and overall immune function even in species that are not obligate baskers. Positioning the UVB source so that the gecko can choose to expose itself or retreat into shade replicates the dappled light conditions of its native habitat.

A standard photoperiod of 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness works well year-round for Chahouas that are not being cycled for breeding. The lighting cycle establishes the circadian rhythm that regulates the gecko's activity patterns, hormone production, and appetite. Sudden changes in photoperiod or irregular light schedules can disrupt these cycles and contribute to stress, feeding irregularity, and immune suppression. Timers that automate the on-off cycle eliminate human error and ensure consistency even when the keeper's schedule varies.

Ventilation and Humidity

Humidity management is the single most challenging aspect of Chahoua Gecko husbandry, and the enclosure design must support the specific humidity cycle this species requires. The target is not a single static number but a daily fluctuation: humidity should peak at 80 to 100 percent after misting and be allowed to drop to 50 to 60 percent before the next misting cycle. This rise-and-fall pattern replicates the natural dew cycle of New Caledonian forests and prevents the chronic dampness that leads to respiratory infections and skin disease.

Ventilation is the mechanism that makes this cycle possible. An enclosure that is completely sealed will trap moisture and create stagnant, saturated air that fosters mold and bacterial growth on surfaces, substrate, and even the gecko itself. Front-opening terrariums typically have a screened top panel and sometimes a small screened vent strip along the front, which together create gentle passive airflow. If the enclosure retains too much moisture between misting cycles, increasing the screened area or adding a small computer fan on a timer to circulate air solves the problem without requiring a complete housing change.

Misting can be done manually with a pressurized spray bottle or automated with a programmable misting system. Manual misting works well for keepers with one or two animals and consistent daily schedules, but it becomes impractical for larger collections or for anyone whose routine is unpredictable. Automated misting systems deliver a precise volume of water on a set schedule, ensuring the humidity cycle occurs reliably regardless of whether the keeper is home. The nozzles should produce a fine mist rather than a heavy spray, and they should be positioned to coat the foliage and enclosure walls where the gecko drinks.

The enclosure's ability to hold and release humidity is a function of its construction materials, substrate depth, and the presence or absence of live plants. Glass and PVC enclosures hold humidity far more effectively than screen or mesh enclosures. A deep substrate layer, particularly one with a drainage layer beneath it, acts as a humidity reservoir that slowly releases moisture throughout the day. Live plants contribute through transpiration, passively humidifying the air around them. When these elements work together, the keeper's active role in humidity management is reduced to maintaining the misting schedule and monitoring with a hygrometer.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Daily maintenance in a Chahoua enclosure is minimal but non-negotiable. Each morning, remove any uneaten food from the previous evening's feeding, check and refill the water dish, and do a quick visual scan of the enclosure walls and floor for fecal matter. Droppings left in a warm, humid environment become breeding grounds for bacteria and mold within hours, and consistent removal prevents the gradual buildup that eventually requires a full teardown. In a bioactive enclosure, the microfauna cleanup crew handles much of this waste processing, but visual checks are still necessary to ensure the system is keeping pace.

Weekly tasks include wiping down the interior glass or PVC panels to remove water spots and biofilm, inspecting live plants for signs of rot or pest infestation, and checking that all climbing structures remain secure. Branches and cork bark can shift over time, especially if the gecko is active and heavy-bodied, and a piece that falls during the night can injure the animal or block access to a food or water source. A brief test of the structural integrity of each mounted element takes only a minute and prevents problems.

Deep cleaning schedules depend on the type of substrate system in use. Non-bioactive setups with coconut fiber or paper towel substrates should have a full substrate change every four to six weeks, during which the enclosure is emptied, scrubbed with a reptile-safe disinfectant, rinsed thoroughly, dried, and reassembled. Bioactive setups do not require substrate replacement under normal conditions because the microfauna continuously process waste, but they do benefit from periodic topping off of the leaf litter layer and occasional spot checks to confirm the cleanup crew population remains robust.

Disinfection protocols matter and shortcuts create risk. Commercial reptile-safe disinfectants or a dilute chlorhexidine solution are appropriate for cleaning enclosure surfaces and decor. Household cleaners containing pine oil, phenol, or strong fragrances leave residues that are toxic to reptiles even after rinsing. Any item that is disinfected must be rinsed with clean water until no chemical odor remains, then air-dried completely before being returned to the enclosure. Heat sterilization with boiling water or baking in an oven is appropriate for non-porous items like rocks and ceramic hides, but cork bark and wood should not be baked as they can scorch or release harmful fumes.
