Chahoua Geckos (Mniarogekko chahoua) are frugivorous-omnivores native to the humid forests of New Caledonia, where their wild diet consists of overripe fruit, flower nectar, small invertebrates, and the occasional tiny vertebrate. This dual dietary requirement sets them apart from purely insectivorous reptiles and demands a feeding strategy that balances plant-based nutrition with animal protein. A properly fed Chahoua maintains a full, rounded tail that serves as a fat reserve, bright eyes, and smooth skin free of retained shed.
The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is the cornerstone of Chahoua nutrition, just as it is for other New Caledonian geckos. Most fruit and many feeder insects are phosphorus-heavy, so deliberate correction through supplementation and gut-loading is essential to prevent metabolic bone disease. The target ratio across the overall diet is approximately 2:1 calcium to phosphorus, achieved through consistent dusting, calcium-enriched commercial diets, and properly prepared feeder insects rather than any single meal.
Because Chahouas are larger and heavier-bodied than their close relative the Crested Gecko, their caloric requirements are proportionally greater, and they tend to consume feeder insects more enthusiastically. This means the insect component of the diet plays a larger nutritional role than it does for smaller Rhacodactylus-complex species, and skimping on live prey in favor of fruit mix alone can result in slow growth, poor muscle development, and reduced breeding vigor.
Hydration is tightly linked to nutrition in this species. Chahouas obtain a significant portion of their daily moisture from licking water droplets off foliage and enclosure walls after misting, and from the moisture content of their fruit diet. Dehydration suppresses appetite and slows gut motility, so maintaining proper humidity and offering fresh water alongside food is not merely a husbandry nicety but a direct nutritional concern.
