In captivity, a relative humidity range of 50 to 70 percent works well for most species in the genus, with the ability to spike humidity briefly during shedding periods by increasing misting frequency or adding damp sphagnum moss to a hide. Sustained humidity above 80 percent invites respiratory infections and fungal growth on both the animal and the enclosure furnishings.

Misting is the most direct tool for managing humidity. A shallow water dish completes the floor-level furnishing. It should be heavy enough to resist tipping, shallow enough that the lizard can enter and exit easily, and positioned on the cool side where evaporation contributes to humidity without raising temperatures. Some keepers add a small, flat stone inside the dish to give the lizard a stepping surface, which is a simple addition that encourages use.

Cleaning and Maintenance

A consistent cleaning routine is the unglamorous backbone of healthy husbandry, and the specific protocol depends heavily on whether the enclosure runs a bioactive or a sterile substrate system. In a bioactive setup, the cleanup crew of springtails and isopods handles the bulk of waste processing, and the keeper's role shifts from active cleaning to monitoring: checking that the microfauna population is healthy, removing any large uneaten prey items or shed skin that the crew has not broken down, and topping off substrate depth as decomposition gradually lowers the floor level.

In a non-bioactive enclosure, daily spot-cleaning is essential. Remove feces, urates, and uneaten insects each day, and replace any substrate that has become soiled or compacted. A full substrate change on a monthly cycle, or sooner if odor or mold develops, keeps the enclosure sanitary. During a full change, all furnishings should be removed, scrubbed with a reptile-safe disinfectant, rinsed thoroughly, and allowed to dry before reassembly.

The water dish requires daily attention regardless of substrate type. Empty it, scrub it, and refill it with fresh dechlorinated water every day without exception. Standing water in a warm environment becomes a bacterial incubator within hours, and a lizard drinking from or soaking in contaminated water is a lizard on a path toward gastrointestinal or dermal infection.

Glass panels and viewing surfaces should be wiped down weekly with a damp cloth or a vinegar-water solution to remove hard-water deposits and organic film. Deep cleaning the entire enclosure, including disinfecting the enclosure walls and all hardware, should happen at minimum every three to four months for non-bioactive setups. For bioactive systems, a full teardown is rarely necessary unless a disease event requires it, but the keeper should periodically inspect the drainage layer for stagnant water buildup and ensure the substrate has not compacted to the point of losing its drainage function.

The most pervasive housing mistake with alligator lizards is treating them like a ground-dwelling species. Care sheets written for leopard geckos or bearded dragons dominate online search results for beginner reptile keepers, and their emphasis on floor space over vertical space has led many well-meaning owners to house alligator lizards in long, low tanks with minimal climbing opportunity. The result is an animal that paces the glass, displays repetitive escape behavior, and never settles into the calm, exploratory demeanor that characterizes a well-housed specimen.

Inadequate thermal gradients are the second most common error. Placing a single heat source in the center of a small enclosure creates a uniformly warm environment with no cool retreat, which is functionally as harmful as providing no heat at all. The lizard cannot thermoregulate, its metabolic rate remains elevated around the clock, and chronic thermal stress depresses immune function and shortens lifespan. The gradient must be steep enough that the animal experiences a meaningful temperature difference by moving from one end of the enclosure to the other.

Overcrowding is a mistake that compounds quickly. Alligator lizards are territorial animals that do not naturally cohabitate outside of brief mating encounters. Housing two adults together, particularly two males, in anything short of an exceptionally large and densely furnished enclosure leads to chronic stress, competition for basking sites, bite injuries, and suppressed feeding in the subordinate animal. The dominant lizard may appear to thrive while the subordinate slowly deteriorates, creating a misleading impression that the arrangement is working.

Finally, placing the enclosure in a high-traffic area or in direct sunlight is a subtle but significant housing error. Alligator lizards are alert and reactive to movement outside the enclosure, and constant visual stimulation from passing people, pets, or screen glare keeps the animal in a heightened state of vigilance that it cannot escape. Direct sunlight through a window can overheat a glass enclosure within minutes, creating lethal temperatures even when the room itself feels comfortable. Position the enclosure in a quiet area with controlled lighting, away from windows, doorways, and household foot traffic.
