Alligator lizards are opportunistic insectivores and carnivores whose wild diet spans a remarkable range of invertebrate prey. Species in the Elgaria and Gerrhonotus genera consume beetles, spiders, centipedes, crickets, grasshoppers, snails, and even the occasional small vertebrate such as a nestling mouse or a smaller lizard. Replicating this dietary breadth in captivity is the central challenge of feeding them well, and it means that no single feeder insect can serve as a complete nutritional solution on its own.
The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is a critical metric for any insectivorous reptile, and alligator lizards are no exception. Most commercially available feeder insects carry a phosphorus-heavy profile that, over months and years of exclusive feeding, pulls calcium from the animal's skeletal reserves and leads to metabolic bone disease. Correcting this imbalance through a combination of gut-loading the prey and dusting it with calcium powder is not an optional extra but a structural requirement of the diet.
Because alligator lizards are more active and muscular than many comparably sized reptiles, their caloric demands are somewhat higher relative to body mass. They burn energy patrolling territories, climbing, and hunting with quick lateral strikes, and a diet that is too lean or too infrequent will show up as a thinning tail base and visible hip bones. Conversely, an overfed animal in a sedentary enclosure can develop fatty liver disease, so the goal is to match intake to activity level rather than feed on autopilot.
Hydration is woven into nutrition for this species. In the wild they drink dew and rainwater from leaf surfaces, and many captive alligator lizards prefer to lap water droplets from cage furnishings rather than drink from a standing dish. Misting the enclosure lightly in the evening can encourage drinking behavior, and high-moisture feeders like hornworms or silkworms contribute meaningfully to overall hydration, especially during shedding cycles.
