African Dwarf Frogs (Hymenochirus boettgeri) are opportunistic carnivores that feed exclusively on animal-based protein. In the wild they inhabit slow-moving freshwater streams and shallow pools across sub-Saharan Africa, scavenging invertebrate larvae, tiny crustaceans, and organic detritus from the substrate. Their feeding strategy is driven almost entirely by scent and lateral-line vibration rather than sight, which shapes both what you offer and how you deliver it in captivity.
Because these frogs are fully aquatic, every morsel they consume enters and often disintegrates in the water column. This creates a unique nutritional challenge that land-dwelling species do not face: uneaten food fouls water quality within hours, and overly enthusiastic feeding can crash a nitrogen cycle faster than the filter can compensate. Successful feeding is therefore a balance between providing adequate calories and keeping the tank stable.
Their small body size means caloric needs are modest, but the quality of those calories matters enormously. A diet built around a single food source, whether pellets or bloodworms, will eventually produce nutritional gaps. The goal is a varied rotation anchored by a reliable staple, supplemented with live or frozen items that deliver trace nutrients, enrichment, and the kind of feeding behavior that keeps the animal mentally engaged.
Unlike the closely related African Clawed Frog (Xenopus laevis), which grows large and eats aggressively, the dwarf frog is a slow, deliberate feeder that can easily be outcompeted by tankmates. Any feeding plan must account for this pace, ensuring the frog has time and space to locate food before it is consumed by faster fish or swept into the filter intake.
