Space Requirements

Chilean Rose Tarantulas are terrestrial spiders that spend the majority of their time on the ground. They do not climb extensively and are actually at risk of injury from falls, which means vertical space is far less important than adequate floor area. A general rule of thumb is that the enclosure should offer a floor footprint roughly three times the spider's leg span in both length and width, which for an adult Chilean Rose translates to an enclosure approximately 15 to 18 inches long and 10 to 12 inches wide.

Height should be kept modest — no more than about 12 inches from the substrate surface to the lid. Tall enclosures invite climbing, and a fall from even a short height can rupture a tarantula's fragile abdomen, potentially causing fatal injury. If you repurpose a taller enclosure, adding extra substrate depth to reduce the climbing distance is a common and effective workaround.

While Chilean Roses are not particularly active spiders, they do benefit from enough room to move freely, explore, and position themselves near or away from their water dish and hide as they choose. An enclosure that is too cramped can cause stress, while one that is excessively large can make it difficult for the spider to locate prey. The goal is a comfortable middle ground that gives your tarantula options without overwhelming it.

For juveniles and slings, smaller enclosures such as deli cups or small acrylic containers with ventilation holes are perfectly adequate. These smaller setups actually make it easier to monitor the young spider, maintain humidity, and ensure prey items are accessible. As the tarantula grows and molts into larger instars, you can gradually upgrade to a full-sized adult enclosure.

Enclosure Types

Glass terrariums with front-opening doors are among the most popular enclosure choices for Chilean Rose Tarantulas. Front-opening designs allow you to access the enclosure without reaching over the spider from above, which reduces stress for both keeper and tarantula. These enclosures typically come with screen tops that provide ventilation, and many models include built-in channels for cable management if you later add heating or monitoring equipment.

Acrylic enclosures are a lightweight and often more affordable alternative to glass. They offer excellent visibility, good insulation, and are available in a wide range of sizes specifically designed for terrestrial invertebrates. Many acrylic enclosures feature cross-ventilation through small holes drilled in the sides, which maintains airflow without the excessive drying effect of a full mesh lid. This can be a real advantage for maintaining appropriate humidity levels.

Plastic storage containers, modified with ventilation holes drilled or melted into the sides and lid, are a practical and budget-friendly option favored by many experienced keepers. While they lack the visual appeal of glass or acrylic, they are easy to clean, stack, and replace. For keepers with multiple tarantulas, a rack of modified storage containers is an efficient way to house a collection without dedicating an entire shelf to individual terrariums.

Regardless of which enclosure style you choose, secure closure is non-negotiable. Tarantulas are surprisingly capable of pushing through loose-fitting lids, and a Chilean Rose on the loose in your home is both a safety risk and a stressful situation for the spider. Ensure that whatever enclosure you select locks, latches, or clips firmly shut with no gaps large enough for the spider to squeeze through.

Substrate & Bedding

The substrate you choose serves multiple functions: it provides footing, helps regulate humidity, allows limited burrowing behavior, and cushions the spider in the event of a short fall. Coconut fiber, sold in compressed bricks that expand when soaked, is one of the most widely recommended substrates for Chilean Rose Tarantulas. It holds moisture well without becoming waterlogged, resists mold when maintained properly, and provides a naturalistic appearance.

Peat moss is another effective option, either on its own or mixed with coconut fiber to create a blended substrate that balances moisture retention with drainage. A roughly 50/50 mix of coconut fiber and peat moss creates a substrate that holds a humidity gradient — slightly damp at the bottom, drier on the surface — which mimics the semi-arid conditions Chilean Roses experience in the wild.

Substrate depth should be at least three to four inches for an adult enclosure. This depth provides adequate cushioning, allows the tarantula to excavate shallow scrapes or retreats if it chooses, and creates a moisture reservoir at the bottom that slowly releases humidity without making the surface soggy. Lightly dampen the lower layers during setup and allow the top inch or so to remain dry.

Avoid substrates that are overly dusty, sharp, or chemically treated. Cedar and pine shavings release aromatic oils that are toxic to arachnids. Pure vermiculite can be too moisture-retentive and may promote mold. Gravel and sand offer no cushioning and can injure a tarantula's delicate book lungs. Stick to organic, pesticide-free substrates designed for invertebrate or reptile use, and replace the substrate entirely during periodic deep cleans of the enclosure.

Hides & Enclosure Furnishings

Every Chilean Rose Tarantula enclosure should include at least one hide — a sheltered space where the spider can retreat and feel secure. Half-logs made from cork bark are a popular and naturalistic option, as they provide a curved roof that the tarantula can press against from underneath, mimicking the burrow entrances and rock crevices the species uses in the wild. Coconut shell halves, ceramic caves, and curved pieces of driftwood also work well.

Position the hide so that it rests securely on the substrate with a single opening that the tarantula can easily enter and exit. Some keepers partially bury one end of a cork bark tube to create a more tunnel-like entrance, which many Chilean Roses seem to prefer. Avoid hides that are too large or too open, as the spider may not feel enclosed enough to use them, and avoid hides with rough or sharp interior edges that could abrade the spider's exoskeleton.

Beyond the primary hide, you can add visual interest and mild environmental complexity with items like small pieces of dried leaf litter, smooth stones, or artificial plants. These additions are not strictly necessary but can create microclimates within the enclosure and give the spider subtle environmental choices. Keep decorations low to the ground and stable — anything that can topple onto the tarantula is a hazard.

Minimalism is generally the best approach when furnishing a tarantula enclosure. Chilean Roses are not highly interactive with their environment and do not need complex landscapes. A clean layout with one good hide, a water dish, and open floor space for movement is ideal. Over-decorating makes maintenance more difficult, creates more surfaces for mold and mites to colonize, and increases the chance of something shifting and injuring the spider.

Temperature & Climate Control

Chilean Rose Tarantulas thrive in a temperature range of approximately 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which aligns with typical room temperature in most homes. If your living space stays within this range year-round, supplemental heating is unnecessary. This is one of the reasons the species is so popular with beginners — its environmental requirements are modest and often met by default.

If your home drops below 65 degrees regularly, particularly at night or during winter months, a low-wattage heat mat placed on one side of the enclosure exterior can provide a gentle thermal gradient. The mat should never cover the entire bottom of the enclosure, as this eliminates the spider's ability to thermoregulate by moving to cooler areas. Always use a thermostat with any heating element to prevent dangerous temperature spikes.

Heat lamps and overhead ceramic heat emitters are generally not recommended for tarantula enclosures. They tend to dry out the air quickly, can create localized hot spots that burn the spider, and are difficult to regulate precisely for the small enclosure volumes tarantulas require. If supplemental heat is necessary, an adhesive heat mat connected to a thermostat is the safest and most reliable approach.

Humidity should be maintained around 60 to 70 percent, which can usually be achieved by keeping the lower substrate layers slightly damp and providing a full water dish. A simple analog or digital hygrometer placed inside the enclosure lets you monitor humidity levels without guesswork. If humidity consistently drops too low, lightly misting one corner of the enclosure or adding a larger water dish can help, but avoid making the entire enclosure damp, as excessive moisture promotes mold and respiratory problems.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Routine maintenance for a Chilean Rose Tarantula enclosure is straightforward and minimally disruptive. On a daily basis, check the water dish and refill or clean it as needed. Remove any visible food remains — boluses of leftover prey that the tarantula has discarded after feeding — to prevent mold and bacterial growth. These boluses are typically found near the spider's hide or wherever it last fed.

Spot cleaning should be done weekly or as needed. This involves removing any obvious waste, dead feeder insects, or areas of substrate that have become soiled or moldy. Use long tweezers or tongs to minimize disturbance to the spider. Most Chilean Roses will retreat to their hide during maintenance, but some may adopt a defensive posture if they feel threatened, so work calmly and avoid sudden movements.

A full substrate change should be performed every three to four months, or sooner if you notice persistent mold, mites, or an unpleasant odor. During a full clean, gently relocate the tarantula to a temporary container, remove all substrate and furnishings, wash the enclosure with warm water and a mild vinegar solution, rinse thoroughly, and set up fresh substrate and clean hides before returning the spider. Avoid soap or chemical cleaners, as residue can be harmful to arachnids.

Keep in mind that tarantulas are sensitive to environmental disruption, and major enclosure overhauls can cause temporary stress. After a full clean, your Chilean Rose may spend a few days exploring the reset environment and resettling into its hide. This is normal behavior. Minimize the frequency of full teardowns by staying on top of daily and weekly spot cleaning, which keeps the enclosure habitable for much longer stretches between deep cleans.
