Understanding this simple but specific requirement is the foundation of keeping your tarantula well-fed and healthy.

Because Chilean Roses have a notoriously slow metabolism, they do not need to eat frequently. Adults may thrive on just a few prey items per week, and some individuals voluntarily fast for weeks or even months at a time, particularly before a molt. This natural fasting behavior is normal and should not be cause for alarm unless accompanied by other signs of distress such as a shriveled abdomen.

The quality of the prey you offer matters as much as the type. Feeder insects that have been gut-loaded — fed a nutritious diet before being offered to your tarantula — pass those nutrients along. Prey raised on poor diets or kept in unsanitary conditions can introduce parasites or offer diminished nutritional value. Sourcing healthy, well-maintained feeder insects is one of the most important purchasing decisions you will make for your tarantula.

Hydration is another critical component of nutrition that is often overlooked. While Chilean Roses obtain some moisture from their prey, they also need access to a shallow water dish at all times. Prey Types & Selection

The most commonly available and widely recommended feeder insect for Chilean Rose Tarantulas is the cricket. Crickets are nutritious, easy to find, and appropriately sized for most juvenile and adult tarantulas. When selecting crickets, choose individuals that are no larger than the length of your tarantula's abdomen. Oversized prey can stress or even injure your spider, and undersized prey may not be worth the energy expenditure of a hunt.

A well-gut-loaded cricket or roach delivers significantly more vitamins and minerals than one that has been sitting in a bare container with no food.

Effective gut-loading diets for feeder insects include fresh vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and dark leafy greens, supplemented with high-quality commercial gut-load products. Supplements & Hydration

Unlike reptiles, tarantulas do not typically require calcium or vitamin dusting on their prey. The nutritional needs of arachnids are simpler, and a well-gut-loaded diet of varied prey items generally provides everything a Chilean Rose Tarantula needs. Over-supplementation is not well studied in tarantulas and is generally unnecessary for healthy specimens kept on a proper feeding regimen.

Hydration, on the other hand, is absolutely essential and should be addressed through both a water dish and appropriate enclosure humidity. A shallow water dish — small enough that your tarantula cannot accidentally submerge — should be present at all times and refreshed with clean, dechlorinated water every day or two. Some keepers use bottle caps or small ceramic dishes, both of which work well as long as they are stable and easy to clean.

Light misting of one side of the enclosure can supplement humidity, especially during dry winter months when indoor heating lowers ambient moisture. Prey Items to Avoid

Wild-caught insects should never be fed to your tarantula. Bugs collected from gardens, fields, or around the home may have been exposed to pesticides, herbicides, or parasites that can be lethal to arachnids. Even insects from seemingly clean environments can carry internal parasites or chemical residues that are invisible but harmful. Always source feeder insects from reputable breeders or pet supply retailers.

Certain prey animals are too large, too aggressive, or otherwise inappropriate for Chilean Rose Tarantulas. Adult mice or lizards, sometimes marketed as feeders for large tarantulas, pose a significant injury risk and are unnecessary for this species. Chilean Roses are not aggressive feeders and can be overwhelmed or harmed by vertebrate prey. Stick to appropriately sized invertebrate feeders for safe and stress-free meals.

Fireflies and lightning bugs are toxic to tarantulas and many other exotic pets. The lucibufagins they produce as a defense chemical can be fatal even in very small quantities. Similarly, avoid any brightly colored or strong-smelling wild insects, as these visual and chemical signals often indicate toxicity. When in doubt about whether an insect is safe, err on the side of caution and stick to established feeder species.

Avoid offering dead insects that have been sitting out for extended periods, as decomposition introduces harmful bacteria. If you choose to offer pre-killed prey — which some keepers do for reluctant feeders or during pre-molt periods — use freshly killed insects and present them with tongs to simulate movement. Remove any uneaten remains promptly to maintain enclosure hygiene.

Feeding Frequency & Scheduling

Adult Chilean Rose Tarantulas typically do well on a feeding schedule of two to three appropriately sized prey items per week. However, individual appetites vary considerably, and many keepers find that their spider voluntarily refuses food at certain times of the year. This cyclical appetite is well-documented in the species and is closely tied to molting cycles, seasonal changes, and the spider's overall metabolic rhythm.

Juvenile and sub-adult tarantulas have faster metabolisms and should be offered food more frequently — roughly every three to five days. Growing spiders need consistent nutrition to support healthy molting and development. If a juvenile consistently refuses food, check your husbandry parameters such as temperature and humidity before assuming there is a health issue.

Fasting periods in Chilean Roses can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Females in particular are known for extended fasts that can alarm new keepers. As long as the tarantula's abdomen remains plump and rounded, and the spider has access to fresh water, a prolonged fast is almost always a normal part of the animal's natural cycle. Attempting to force-feed a fasting tarantula is both unnecessary and potentially harmful.

Feeder Insect Storage & Maintenance

If you maintain a colony of feeder insects at home, proper storage and care directly impact the quality of nutrition your tarantula receives. Crickets should be kept in a well-ventilated container with egg crate or cardboard tubes for hiding, a shallow water source or water gel crystals to prevent drowning, and a consistent supply of fresh vegetables and dry gut-load food. A neglected cricket colony quickly becomes a source of dead insects, ammonia buildup, and potential disease.

Dubia roaches are lower maintenance than crickets and can be kept in a simple plastic bin with ventilation holes, egg flats for vertical hiding space, and a diet of fresh produce and commercial roach chow. Roach colonies reproduce slowly enough to be manageable but quickly enough to become self-sustaining if you feed tarantulas regularly. Keeping your own colony eliminates the need for frequent store trips and ensures a consistent supply of healthy feeders.

Mealworms and superworms can be stored in a container of oat bran or wheat bran in a cool location. Refrigerating mealworms slows their development and extends their shelf life, while superworms should be kept at room temperature as cold can kill them. Both species benefit from occasional slices of carrot or potato for moisture. Replace the substrate and food regularly to prevent mold and mite infestations.

Regardless of which feeder species you keep, cleanliness is paramount. Remove dead insects promptly, replace soiled substrate on a regular schedule, and wash containers periodically.
