These tools serve multiple purposes: removing uneaten prey and food boluses, placing water dishes, repositioning hides and decorations, and offering pre-killed prey to reluctant feeders. Tongs eliminate the need to put your hands directly into the enclosure for most routine tasks, reducing stress for both you and the spider.

For Chilean Rose Tarantula keeping, tongs in the 8 to 12 inch range are ideal. Shorter tongs require you to reach deeper into the enclosure, while excessively long tongs can be clumsy and imprecise in a small terrarium. Look for tongs with rounded or rubber-coated tips rather than sharp metal points, as these are less likely to injure the tarantula if accidental contact occurs.

Stainless steel feeding tongs designed for reptile keeping work perfectly well for tarantulas and are easy to sterilize between uses. Bamboo feeding tongs are a softer alternative that some keepers prefer for their gentler touch, though they are harder to clean thoroughly and may need to be replaced more frequently. Plastic-tipped aquarium tweezers offer a good compromise of durability and safety.

Keep your tongs clean by wiping them down with a damp cloth after each use and periodically sanitizing them with a dilute vinegar solution. Avoid using soap or chemical disinfectants directly on tools that will enter the enclosure, as residue can be harmful to arachnids. Having at least two pairs — one for feeding and one for cleaning — is a practical approach that avoids cross-contamination between tasks.

Water Dishes & Hydration Accessories

Every Chilean Rose Tarantula enclosure needs a water dish, and choosing the right one is more important than it might seem. The dish should be shallow enough that the tarantula cannot submerge itself, stable enough that it will not tip over during the spider's movements, and easy to remove and clean without disturbing the rest of the enclosure. Small ceramic dishes, glass dishes, and even inverted jar lids are all commonly used options.

Ceramic water dishes designed for small reptiles are perhaps the best all-around choice. They are heavy enough to resist tipping, easy to scrub clean, and available in sizes appropriate for tarantula enclosures. Avoid dishes with painted interiors or glazes that could leach chemicals into the water over time. Plain, unglazed stoneware or food-safe glazed ceramic is the safest option.

Some keepers embed small pebbles or aquarium gravel in the water dish to provide the tarantula with a textured surface to grip if it enters the dish, and to prevent feeder insects from drowning in the water. This is a thoughtful precaution, though it does make the dish slightly harder to clean. If you use pebbles, choose smooth, rounded stones and rinse them thoroughly before placing them in the dish.

Refresh the water every day or two, or whenever it becomes visibly soiled with substrate or debris. Dechlorinated water or spring water is preferable to straight tap water, as chlorine and chloramines can potentially irritate the tarantula's sensitive respiratory tissues. If your tap water is heavily treated, keeping a jug of dechlorinated water on hand specifically for the enclosure is a small effort that pays off in long-term animal health.

Spray Bottles & Humidity Tools

A small, fine-mist spray bottle is an essential accessory for maintaining appropriate humidity levels in your Chilean Rose Tarantula enclosure. Occasional misting of one side of the enclosure or a section of substrate helps maintain the 60 to 70 percent humidity range this species prefers without saturating the entire habitat. Choose a spray bottle that produces a genuinely fine mist rather than a stream or large droplets, as heavy spraying can startle the spider and create overly wet patches.

Dedicate a spray bottle exclusively to your tarantula enclosure and label it clearly. Never use a bottle that has previously contained cleaning products, pesticides, or any other chemicals, as even trace residues can be harmful. Fill the bottle with dechlorinated or spring water and rinse it out periodically to prevent mineral buildup or bacterial growth in the nozzle.

A hygrometer — a device that measures relative humidity — is an important companion accessory to your spray bottle. Without a hygrometer, you are guessing at humidity levels, and both too-dry and too-damp conditions can cause health problems. Compact digital hygrometers with probe sensors are inexpensive, accurate, and easy to position inside the enclosure. Analog dial hygrometers are another option, though they tend to be less precise and require periodic recalibration.

For keepers who prefer a more passive approach to humidity management, a larger water dish or a small section of damp sphagnum moss placed in one corner of the enclosure can provide a localized humidity boost without active misting. This approach reduces the need for frequent spraying and can be especially useful if you are away for a day or two and cannot maintain your usual misting schedule.

Catch Cups & Transfer Containers

A catch cup is a clear plastic or acrylic container used to safely contain and move your tarantula during enclosure cleanings, rehousing, or emergencies. Every keeper should have at least one catch cup ready at all times, because the moment you need to move your tarantula is rarely the moment you have time to search for an appropriate container. Deli cups, clear plastic food containers, and purpose-made acrylic catch cups all work well.

The ideal catch cup is transparent, allowing you to see the spider at all times during the transfer. It should be large enough for the tarantula to sit comfortably inside without its legs pressing against the walls, but small enough to manage with one hand. A matching lid or a piece of stiff cardboard that can slide underneath to seal the cup is essential for safe containment during transport.

The standard transfer technique involves gently guiding the tarantula into the cup using a soft paintbrush or piece of cardboard, then sliding the lid or cardboard underneath once the spider is inside. This method avoids direct hand contact and keeps the spider contained in a secure, visible space throughout the process. Practice the motion a few times without the spider present so that you are confident and smooth when it counts.

Keep your catch cups clean and stored in an accessible location near your tarantula enclosures. Some keepers keep a catch cup, a piece of cardboard, and a soft brush together as a ready-to-go transfer kit. Having these tools within arm's reach eliminates fumbling during the slightly stressful process of rehousing and reduces the chance of an accidental escape.

Substrate & Cleaning Supplies

Maintaining a stock of fresh substrate is an often-overlooked but practical necessity. Coconut fiber bricks, the most commonly used tarantula substrate, are compact and easy to store in a dry location until needed. Keeping at least one or two extra bricks on hand means you are always ready for a scheduled substrate change or an unexpected situation that requires a quick enclosure refresh. Running out of substrate mid-cleaning is an avoidable frustration.

A small handheld scoop or spoon dedicated to enclosure work is useful for removing soiled substrate patches, food boluses, and debris without disturbing the entire habitat. Plastic aquarium scoops or even disposable plastic spoons work perfectly well for this purpose. The key is having a dedicated tool that stays with your tarantula supplies rather than borrowing from the kitchen each time.

For enclosure disinfection during deep cleans, white vinegar diluted with water in a roughly 1:1 ratio is the safest cleaning solution. It is effective at killing most bacteria and molds, leaves no harmful residue after thorough rinsing, and is inexpensive. Avoid bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, and commercial disinfectants, all of which can leave chemical residues that are dangerous to arachnids even in small amounts.

Paper towels and clean microfiber cloths round out the essential cleaning supplies. Paper towels are useful for wiping down enclosure walls and drying surfaces after a vinegar wash, while a microfiber cloth is ideal for polishing glass or acrylic panels to maintain visibility. Keep a small bin or basket stocked with your cleaning supplies so that everything you need for routine maintenance is organized and ready to go.

Lighting & Background Accessories

Chilean Rose Tarantulas do not require specialized lighting. They are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular and prefer dim conditions during the day, retreating to their hides to avoid bright light. Ambient room lighting that follows a natural day-night cycle is sufficient and ideal. If your enclosure is in a room without windows or with very little natural light, a low-wattage LED light on a timer can simulate a gentle photoperiod without generating heat or excessive brightness.

If you do choose to add lighting for viewing purposes, use a low-intensity LED strip positioned outside the enclosure rather than an interior fixture. Red or blue LED strips are popular choices because they allow nighttime observation without disturbing the spider's natural behavior. These wavelengths are less perceptible to arachnids and create an atmospheric viewing experience for the keeper while minimizing impact on the animal.

Enclosure backgrounds — printed or textured panels that attach to the back and side walls — are a purely aesthetic accessory that has no impact on the tarantula but can enhance the visual appeal of the setup. Cork bark panels, foam rock backgrounds, and printed desert or scrubland scenes are all available and can transform a plain glass box into a more visually integrated display. Ensure that any background is securely attached so it cannot fall inward and trap or crush the spider.

Thermometer and hygrometer placement is worth mentioning alongside lighting and backgrounds, as these instruments are often mounted on the enclosure walls. Position them at substrate level rather than near the top of the enclosure, since that is where the tarantula actually lives and where accurate readings matter most. A thermometer mounted near the lid will read warmer than the actual conditions at ground level, potentially leading you to under-heat or over-cool the habitat.
