Wired probe models are generally more accurate than units that rely on a built-in sensor mounted on the enclosure wall. A probe placed directly on or within the substrate gives readings that reflect the actual conditions the millipede experiences at ground level, which can differ by several degrees and multiple percentage points of humidity from conditions near the top of the enclosure. Some units include two probes, making it easy to monitor both the warm and cool ends of the enclosure simultaneously.
Wireless sensor units that transmit data to a base station or smartphone application represent the next tier of monitoring technology. These allow keepers to check enclosure conditions from another room or while away from home, providing peace of mind without opening the enclosure. Many wireless units log data over time and can generate graphs showing temperature and humidity trends across days or weeks, which is valuable for identifying gradual environmental drift that might not be apparent from spot checks.
When selecting a digital monitoring device, accuracy specifications matter. Look for units with a stated accuracy of plus or minus one degree Fahrenheit for temperature and plus or minus three percent for relative humidity. Cheaper units with wider accuracy ranges can give misleading readings that lead to incorrect adjustments. Calibrating a new unit against a known-accurate reference device before placing it in the enclosure helps establish confidence in its readings from the start.
