A basic handheld spray bottle filled with dechlorinated water is the minimum requirement. Choose a bottle with a fine mist nozzle rather than a stream setting, as a gentle mist distributes moisture evenly across the substrate without creating puddles or disturbing the millipede.

Pressure sprayers designed for gardening offer an upgrade over standard spray bottles. These pump-action sprayers build internal pressure and deliver a continuous fine mist with less hand fatigue, which is particularly helpful for keepers maintaining multiple enclosures. A one-liter or two-liter model is sufficient for most setups and can be dedicated exclusively to millipede use to avoid cross-contamination with garden chemicals.

Automated misting systems represent the highest tier of humidity management. These units connect to a small water reservoir and release timed mist bursts at intervals set by the keeper. While they involve a higher upfront cost, they provide unmatched consistency and are invaluable for keepers who travel or maintain irregular schedules. When using automated systems, calibrate the timer carefully, as over-misting can saturate the substrate and create anaerobic conditions that harm both the millipede and the substrate microbiology.

Regardless of the misting method, water quality matters. Tap water containing chlorine or chloramine should be treated with a water conditioner or allowed to sit uncovered for 24 hours to off-gas before use. Spring water or reverse-osmosis water are safe alternatives. Distilled water is acceptable in the short term but lacks the trace minerals found in spring water, which can contribute marginally to the millipede's mineral intake through substrate absorption.

Handling & Transport Supplies

Giant African Millipedes are among the most handleable invertebrate pets, but proper handling accessories reduce stress for both the animal and the keeper. Soft, lint-free gloves are recommended for keepers who are sensitive to the mild defensive secretion that millipedes can release when startled. This secretion contains benzoquinones, which can stain skin and cause irritation in sensitive individuals. Nitrile exam gloves work well for routine handling and enclosure maintenance.

A flat, soft-bristled paintbrush or makeup brush is useful for gently coaxing a millipede to move without picking it up directly. Brushing lightly behind the animal encourages it to walk forward onto your hand or into a temporary container. This technique is less stressful than grasping and is particularly helpful when moving a millipede that has settled into a tight space or is reluctant to release its grip on a piece of bark.

Transport containers are necessary for veterinary visits, enclosure cleanings, or moving the animal between locations. A small, ventilated plastic container with a secure lid and a layer of damp substrate or moist paper towels on the bottom provides a safe temporary holding environment. The container should be dark or covered with a cloth to reduce light exposure during transport, as millipedes are nocturnal and find bright conditions stressful.

For longer transport situations, such as relocating to a new home or traveling to an exotic animal event, insulated containers or small cooler bags help maintain stable temperatures. In cold weather, hand warmers placed outside the transport container but within the insulated bag can prevent dangerous temperature drops. In hot weather, keep the transport container out of direct sunlight and avoid leaving it in a parked vehicle, where temperatures can become lethal within minutes.

Cleaning & Maintenance Supplies

Routine enclosure maintenance requires a basic set of tools that every millipede keeper should assemble. A small hand trowel or scoop is essential for spot-cleaning waste, removing uneaten food, and turning the substrate to prevent compaction. Plastic or stainless steel scoops are preferable to painted or coated tools, which may chip and leave residue in the enclosure.

Long-handled tweezers or feeding tongs, typically 10 to 12 inches in length, allow keepers to place and remove food items, calcium supplements, and small debris without reaching deep into the enclosure and disturbing the millipede. Rounded-tip tweezers are safer than pointed versions, reducing the risk of accidentally injuring the animal if it moves unexpectedly during maintenance.

A dedicated set of small containers or dishes for food placement keeps the enclosure organized and simplifies cleanup. Shallow ceramic or glass dishes for fresh produce can be lifted out, washed, and returned easily. Disposable options like bottle caps or small pieces of wax paper also work but generate more waste over time. Whichever approach you choose, having designated food stations makes it easier to track how much the millipede is eating.

For periodic deep cleaning, a plain spray bottle filled with a vinegar-and-water solution at a ratio of one part vinegar to four parts water serves as a safe, chemical-free glass cleaner for the enclosure walls. Rinse all surfaces thoroughly with plain dechlorinated water after cleaning, and ensure the enclosure is completely dry before adding fresh substrate. Never use commercial glass cleaners, bleach, or ammonia-based products near the enclosure, as residual fumes and chemical traces can be fatal to invertebrates.

Measurement & Monitoring Instruments

Accurate environmental monitoring is critical for maintaining the narrow temperature and humidity ranges that Giant African Millipedes require. A digital thermometer-hygrometer combination unit is the single most important monitoring accessory. These devices display both temperature and relative humidity on a single screen and are available in wired probe and wireless versions. Place the sensor probe at substrate level, not mounted high on the enclosure wall, to get readings that reflect conditions where the millipede actually lives.

Dual-probe models that allow simultaneous monitoring of two locations are particularly useful for verifying that the thermal gradient across the enclosure is functioning correctly. One probe placed on the warm side near the heat mat and one on the cool side gives the keeper a clear picture of the temperature range available to the animal at any given time. Some models record minimum and maximum readings over a 24-hour period, which helps identify temperature swings that occur overnight or during weather changes.

A kitchen or postal scale accurate to at least one gram is a valuable tool for tracking the millipede's weight over time. Regular weigh-ins, once every two to four weeks, can reveal early signs of health issues that are not yet visible. Weight loss may indicate insufficient food quality, parasitic infection, or environmental stress. Weight gain followed by reduced activity often signals an impending molt. Keeping a simple log of weights and dates creates a useful health record.

Substrate moisture meters, the type sold for houseplant care, can supplement the hygrometer by measuring moisture content directly within the substrate. These inexpensive probes help keepers determine whether the deeper substrate layers are maintaining appropriate dampness even when the surface appears dry. Insert the probe at several locations across the enclosure to ensure moisture distribution is relatively even, paying special attention to the area near any heat source where drying occurs most rapidly.

Calcium & Mineral Supplements

While calcium is covered extensively in the food section, the physical forms in which calcium is delivered to the enclosure qualify as essential accessories. Cuttlebone, sourced from the internal shell of cuttlefish, is the most widely used passive calcium supplement. It can be placed whole on the substrate surface or broken into smaller pieces and distributed throughout the enclosure. Millipedes rasp on cuttlebone as needed, self-regulating their intake. Cuttlebone is inexpensive, widely available from bird supply vendors, and lasts weeks to months depending on how aggressively the millipede uses it.

Calcium carbonate powder, available from reptile supply retailers and health food stores, serves as a versatile supplementation medium. It can be lightly dusted on fresh produce, mixed into the top layer of substrate, or offered in a small shallow dish. Pharmaceutical-grade calcium carbonate is the purest option and avoids additives found in some reptile-branded supplements. Avoid calcium products that contain added vitamin D3 or phosphorus, as these are formulated for reptile metabolism and are unnecessary for invertebrates.

Crushed eggshells are a free and readily available calcium source that many keepers use to supplement cuttlebone. Wash and bake eggshells at a low temperature to sterilize them, then crush them into small fragments and scatter across the substrate. The irregular texture provides a different rasping surface compared to cuttlebone, and the shells break down gradually into the substrate, contributing calcium to the overall soil chemistry.

Mineral blocks marketed for hermit crabs or reptiles can serve as an additional mineral source, but their composition should be scrutinized before use. Look for products that list calcium carbonate as the primary ingredient without artificial dyes, flavors, or binding agents that may be inappropriate for millipedes. Some mineral blocks contain trace elements like magnesium and potassium that are beneficial in small amounts. Position mineral blocks in an area of the enclosure that remains relatively dry to prevent them from dissolving too quickly and creating a paste on the substrate.

Pest Control & Substrate Health

Mite infestations are the most common pest issue in millipede enclosures, and prevention is far easier than treatment. Grain mites and soil mites thrive in the same warm, humid, organic-rich conditions that millipedes need, making some level of mite presence almost inevitable in bioactive setups. Small populations of soil-dwelling mites are generally harmless and part of a healthy substrate ecosystem. However, explosive population growth, visible as a white or tan dusting on surfaces, food items, and even the millipede itself, indicates an imbalance that needs correction.

Springtail and isopod cleanup crews are the first line of defense against mite overgrowth. These small invertebrates compete with mites for food resources and help keep the substrate ecosystem balanced. Introducing a healthy population of tropical springtails when setting up a new enclosure establishes a biological control mechanism before mite populations can gain a foothold. Springtail cultures are readily available from invertebrate hobby suppliers and are easy to maintain.

Fruit flies and fungus gnats can become a nuisance in enclosures where fresh food is left too long or where the substrate surface remains excessively damp. Yellow sticky traps placed near but not inside the enclosure catch adult flies without exposing the millipede to any chemicals. Removing uneaten fresh food within 24 to 48 hours and allowing the top layer of substrate to dry slightly between mistings reduces the breeding habitat for these pests.

If a mite infestation reaches problematic levels, a partial substrate change combined with reducing humidity slightly for a few days can knock the population back. Remove the millipede to a temporary holding container with clean, damp paper towels and gently brush any visible mites from its body with a soft paintbrush. Replace the top two inches of substrate with fresh material, reintroduce springtails, and return the millipede once conditions stabilize. Chemical miticides should never be used in or near a millipede enclosure, as these products are broadly toxic to arthropods and will harm or kill the millipede along with the mites.
