Calcium is the single most critical nutrient for millipedes. Without adequate calcium intake, their exoskeleton segments become thin, fragile, and prone to cracking during molts. Keepers should provide a constant supply of calcium-rich materials in the enclosure, whether through cuttlebone, powdered calcium carbonate, or crushed eggshells scattered across the substrate surface.

Unlike many exotic pets, millipedes do not require high-protein diets. Excessive protein can actually be harmful, potentially leading to complications during molting. Their metabolism is designed to extract nutrients slowly from fibrous, low-energy plant matter. Hydration also plays a role in nutrition. Millipedes absorb moisture through their environment and through the foods they consume. What to Look For

When selecting food products for Giant African Millipedes, the priority should be natural composition and minimal processing. Leaf litter packs and hardwood supplements should be sourced from pesticide-free environments, as millipedes are highly sensitive to chemical residues. Any product labeled as wild-harvested should specify that it has been collected from areas free of herbicide and insecticide treatment.

Calcium supplements designed for invertebrates should be free of phosphorus additives and vitamin D3, which are formulated for reptiles and can be unnecessary or problematic for millipedes in large quantities. Pure calcium carbonate powder or blocks are the safest option. Products that combine calcium with other minerals should list exact ratios so keepers can evaluate whether trace elements are present in appropriate amounts.

Primary Diet: Leaf Litter & Decaying Wood

The foundation of a Giant African Millipede's diet should be a diverse mix of hardwood leaf litter and softwood chunks in various stages of decay. Oak, beech, maple, and magnolia leaves are all excellent options and can be purchased in pre-dried packs from invertebrate supply vendors. Avoid coniferous materials such as pine, cedar, and spruce, as the natural resins and oils in these woods are toxic to millipedes.

Decaying hardwood serves as both a food source and a supplemental habitat feature. White-rot wood, which has a spongy and pale appearance, is particularly nutritious because fungi have already begun breaking down the lignin, making the cellulose more accessible to the millipede's digestive system. Pieces of rotting hardwood can be purchased or collected from pesticide-free woodlands and added directly to the enclosure.

Moss is another valuable dietary component that is often overlooked. Sphagnum moss and sheet moss provide micronutrients and help maintain humidity levels within the enclosure. These items provide vitamins, natural sugars for energy, and significant moisture content. Cut produce into thin slices or small chunks and place them directly on the substrate surface where the millipede can easily access them.

Calcium supplementation is non-negotiable. Cuttlebone fragments placed throughout the enclosure are a convenient passive source, as millipedes will rasp on them as needed. Alternatively, calcium powder can be lightly dusted on fresh food items once or twice per week. Some keepers maintain a small dish of powdered calcium carbonate in the enclosure at all times, allowing the millipede to self-regulate intake.

Protein should be offered sparingly and only from safe sources. Small amounts of fish flake food, dried shrimp, or a pinch of brewer's yeast scattered on the substrate every week or two can support molting and reproduction. Avoid offering insects, raw meat, or dairy products, as these can foul the substrate rapidly and attract pests. The goal is a trace amount of protein, not a regular dietary component.

Commercial invertebrate food pellets or jellies designed for beetles and millipedes are available and can serve as a convenient supplemental food source. Look for products that list calcium, plant fiber, and natural ingredients as primary components. These should complement the leaf-litter diet rather than replace it, as no commercial product fully replicates the nutritional complexity of a well-maintained decomposing substrate.

Foods to Avoid

Citrus fruits, including oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit, should never be offered to Giant African Millipedes. The high acidity can damage their soft mouthparts and irritate their ventral surface. Similarly, tomatoes and pineapple are too acidic for safe consumption and should be excluded from the diet entirely.

Any produce that has been treated with pesticides, herbicides, or wax coatings poses a serious risk. Millipedes are exceptionally sensitive to chemical residues due to their permeable cuticle and ground-dwelling feeding habits. If sourcing fruits and vegetables from a grocery store, wash them thoroughly or opt for organic varieties. When in doubt, peel the skin before offering.

Avoid feeding any plants from the allium family, including onion, garlic, leeks, and chives. These contain sulfur compounds that are toxic to many invertebrates. Likewise, avocado contains persin, which is harmful to a wide range of animals and should be kept out of the enclosure entirely.

Processed human foods, including bread, crackers, cereals, and anything containing salt, sugar, oils, or preservatives, are inappropriate for millipedes. Even seemingly harmless items like plain rice or pasta offer no nutritional benefit and can promote bacterial growth in the warm, humid enclosure environment. Stick to whole, unprocessed plant matter and purpose-made invertebrate supplements for the safest results.

Feeding Schedule & Portions

Giant African Millipedes are continuous grazers rather than meal feeders, so the enclosure should always contain an ample supply of leaf litter and decaying wood. These baseline food sources do not need to be replaced on a strict schedule but should be replenished as they are consumed or break down into fine soil. A good practice is to add a fresh handful of leaf litter and a new piece of rotting wood every one to two weeks.

Fresh fruits and vegetables should be offered two to three times per week in small portions. A few thin slices of cucumber or a quarter of a banana is sufficient for a single adult millipede. Place the food in a consistent location so you can monitor consumption and remove uneaten items before they mold. Most fresh food should be removed after 24 to 48 hours to prevent attracting mites, fungus gnats, or other unwanted organisms.

Calcium should be available at all times. Replace cuttlebone pieces as they are consumed, and refresh calcium powder dishes weekly. During pre-molt periods, when the millipede may become less active and spend more time burrowed into the substrate, calcium availability is especially important. Some keepers increase calcium supplementation slightly when they notice signs of an impending molt, such as reduced feeding activity and a duller exoskeleton appearance.

Juvenile millipedes have higher relative nutritional demands due to their rapid growth and frequent molting cycles. Offer fresh food more frequently for younger animals, approximately every other day, and ensure that the substrate is rich in organic matter. As millipedes mature and their molting frequency decreases, fresh food offerings can be scaled back to the standard two-to-three-times-per-week routine.

Water & Humidity for Digestive Health

While millipedes do not drink from standing water dishes in the traditional sense, moisture is critical to their ability to process food. They absorb water through their cuticle and from the damp substrate and food items they consume. Maintaining substrate moisture at an appropriate level, damp but not waterlogged, directly supports digestive function and overall health.

Misting the enclosure lightly once or twice daily is the most common method for maintaining humidity. Use dechlorinated or spring water to avoid exposing the millipede to chlorine or chloramine residues. A handheld spray bottle works for small setups, while automated misting systems are available for larger enclosures or keepers who want more consistent humidity control.

A shallow water dish can be placed in the enclosure as an additional humidity source, but it should be very shallow to prevent drowning, no deeper than the millipede's body height when at rest. Some keepers use a damp sponge in a small dish as a safer alternative, which the millipede can rest on or near to absorb moisture. Replace the sponge frequently to prevent bacterial buildup.

Monitor humidity levels with a hygrometer placed inside the enclosure. Giant African Millipedes generally thrive at 70 to 80 percent relative humidity. If humidity drops too low, the millipede may become dehydrated, refuse food, and struggle to molt successfully. If it rises too high and the substrate becomes waterlogged, anaerobic bacteria can proliferate and create toxic conditions. Striking the right balance is essential for both digestive health and overall wellbeing.
