Space Requirements

Atlas Beetles are among the largest rhinoceros beetles in the world, and their enclosure needs reflect their impressive size. A single adult male, with horns that can push total body length past 130 millimeters, requires a container with a footprint of at least 30 by 20 centimeters and a height of 20 centimeters or more. Females are slightly smaller but should be given comparable space, especially if they will be used for breeding.

Larval housing is a different matter entirely. A final-instar Atlas Beetle grub can exceed 100 millimeters in length and weigh over 50 grams, so individual larval containers should hold a minimum of five to eight liters of substrate. Many keepers use deep, opaque bins that allow the larva to burrow without disturbance. Larger containers mean less frequent substrate changes and more stable moisture and temperature conditions.

When housing multiple adults together, space becomes even more critical. Males are territorial and will fight aggressively, locking horns and attempting to flip opponents. Keeping more than one male in a single enclosure is not recommended unless the container is exceptionally large and heavily furnished with visual barriers. Mixed-sex groups can cohabit more peacefully, but ample floor space reduces stress and competition for food.

Vertical space matters for adults, as Atlas Beetles are capable fliers and will attempt to take off, particularly at night. An enclosure that is too short will cause repeated collisions with the lid, which can damage horns and wing covers. Adequate headroom above the tallest climbing structures gives the beetles room to right themselves and move comfortably.

Enclosure Types

Plastic terrariums and faunarium-style containers are the most popular housing choice for Atlas Beetles. They are lightweight, affordable, easy to clean, and available in a wide range of sizes. Look for models with secure, ventilated lids that provide adequate airflow without creating gaps large enough for the beetles to wedge their horns through and escape.

Glass terrariums offer superior visibility and a more polished aesthetic for display setups. Front-opening designs are especially convenient for adult beetle maintenance, as they allow feeding and spot-cleaning without removing the entire lid. However, glass is heavier, more expensive, and retains heat differently than plastic, so temperature monitoring becomes more important.

For larvae, deep storage bins made from food-safe polypropylene are the most practical option. These bins are inexpensive, stackable, and available in volumes that comfortably accommodate large grubs and their substrate. Drill or melt small ventilation holes in the lid to allow gas exchange while preventing moisture loss and pest entry.

Specialty beetle breeding boxes with built-in dividers are available from some invertebrate supply companies. These are designed for keepers managing multiple larvae or breeding pairs and offer compartmentalized housing within a single unit. They simplify organization and record-keeping, though they tend to cost more than equivalent DIY setups.

Substrate & Bedding Setup

The substrate layer in an Atlas Beetle enclosure serves as both bedding and, for larvae, the primary food source. Adult enclosures should have a substrate depth of at least 10 to 15 centimeters to allow burrowing and egg-laying behavior. Compressed coconut fiber, hardwood leaf litter, and decomposed hardwood mixtures are all suitable base materials for adult enclosures.

Larval containers require a much deeper substrate fill, typically occupying 70 to 80 percent of the container volume. The substrate for larvae must be nutritive flake soil or a fermented hardwood blend, as the larvae will eat their bedding material continuously throughout their development. Moisture management is inseparable from substrate choice. The substrate should maintain a consistent dampness similar to a wrung-out sponge throughout the enclosure depth. Products that retain moisture well without compacting, such as coconut coir blended with sphagnum moss, help maintain humidity without becoming waterlogged at the bottom of the container.

Avoid substrates that contain fertilizers, pesticides, or dyes, as these additives are toxic to invertebrates. Similarly, pure peat moss should be used cautiously because its acidity can drop below the range that Atlas Beetles tolerate. If using peat, buffer it by mixing in calcium carbonate or crushed eggshell to stabilize the pH.

Ventilation & Lid Design

Proper ventilation is essential for preventing stagnant air, mold growth, and dangerous carbon dioxide buildup within beetle enclosures. Enclosures with mesh or perforated lids provide the best passive airflow. When purchasing a terrarium, prioritize models where the ventilation is integrated into the lid design rather than relying on a single small opening.

For DIY setups using storage bins, ventilation holes should be drilled or melted into the lid in a pattern that allows cross-ventilation. A cluster of small holes, each no larger than two to three millimeters in diameter, prevents beetle escape while allowing adequate gas exchange. Covering holes with fine stainless-steel mesh adds an extra layer of security against escape and pest intrusion.

Balancing ventilation with humidity retention is one of the ongoing challenges of beetle keeping. Enclosures with large mesh panels lose moisture rapidly and may require daily misting, while fully sealed containers trap excess moisture and promote harmful fungal growth. Adjustable ventilation systems, such as sliding vent panels, give keepers fine control over airflow and are worth the investment.

Lid security is non-negotiable. Atlas Beetles are strong for their size and can push against lightweight lids with surprising force. Use enclosures with locking clasps, weighted lids, or clip-on fasteners. A lid that simply rests on top of the container is an invitation for an overnight escape, especially during the beetles' most active nocturnal hours.

Temperature & Humidity Control

Atlas Beetles are tropical insects that thrive in temperatures between 22 and 27 degrees Celsius. Consistent warmth is important for maintaining normal activity levels and metabolism in adults and for ensuring healthy development in larvae. If your ambient room temperature falls below this range, supplemental heating will be necessary.

Heat mats designed for reptile enclosures are the most commonly used heating product for beetle keepers. These low-wattage adhesive pads can be applied to the side or bottom of an enclosure, though side-mounting is generally preferred to avoid overheating substrate at the base where larvae burrow. Always use a heat mat in conjunction with a thermostat to prevent dangerous temperature spikes.

Humidity should be maintained between 70 and 85 percent for Atlas Beetles. A simple analog or digital hygrometer placed inside the enclosure provides the baseline reading you need. Misting with dechlorinated water every one to two days is usually sufficient to maintain appropriate levels, but in dry climates or heated rooms, a small ultrasonic humidifier near the enclosure can provide more consistent moisture.

Avoid placing enclosures in direct sunlight, near heating vents, or in rooms with significant temperature fluctuations. Rapid temperature swings stress beetles and can trigger premature pupation in larvae or lethal overheating in adults. A stable, warm, dimly lit location is the ideal setting for any Atlas Beetle enclosure.

Furnishing & Habitat Enrichment

A well-furnished enclosure improves quality of life for adult Atlas Beetles by providing climbing surfaces, hiding spots, and feeding stations. Cork bark flats and tubes are among the most useful furnishing products, offering natural-looking shelters that beetles readily use as daytime retreats. Position pieces both horizontally and vertically to give beetles options for climbing and burrowing beneath.

Branches and driftwood provide climbing opportunities and help simulate the forested environments these beetles inhabit in the wild. Choose hardwood pieces that are free of mold, chemical treatments, and sharp edges. Grapevine, mopani wood, and Malaysian driftwood are all suitable options available from reptile and invertebrate supply stores.

Live or artificial plants can add visual appeal to a display enclosure, but they are not essential for beetle welfare. If using live plants, choose hardy tropical species that tolerate the high humidity and low light conditions of a beetle terrarium. Pothos, ferns, and mosses are commonly used and hold up well under these conditions.

Feeding dishes or jelly holders should be placed on the substrate surface in an easily accessible location. Purpose-built jelly holders with recessed cups prevent food from being buried or tipped over by the beetles as they move around. Having a dedicated feeding station also makes it easier to monitor food consumption and swap out old food during routine maintenance.
