Atlas Beetles are large rhinoceros beetles native to Southeast Asia, and their dietary requirements differ substantially between the larval and adult stages. As larvae, they are saprophagous, feeding on decomposing organic material such as rotting hardwood, leaf litter, and composted plant matter. The larval stage can last well over a year, and consistent access to nutrient-dense substrate is the single most important factor in producing healthy, full-sized adults.

Adult Atlas Beetles are frugivores that feed primarily on tree sap and ripe fruit in the wild. In captivity, their diet should center on soft, sugar-rich fruits that mimic the energy sources they would naturally seek out on the forest floor and along tree trunks. Their caloric needs are modest compared to their size, but the quality and freshness of food directly impact longevity and breeding viability.

Both stages benefit from mineral supplementation. Calcium is especially important for larvae building large exoskeletons, while adults need a balance of sugars and trace minerals to sustain flight muscle maintenance and reproductive activity. Understanding the distinction between larval and adult nutrition is the foundation for choosing the right products.

A common mistake among new keepers is offering the same food to larvae and adults. Larval substrate and adult fruit offerings are entirely different product categories, and confusing them leads to malnutrition or substrate contamination. Always plan your purchases around the specific life stage of your beetles.

What to Look For

When shopping for larval substrate, look for products made from thoroughly decomposed hardwood. Oak, beech, and similar deciduous species are ideal base materials. The substrate should be dark, crumbly, and free of large unprocessed wood chips. Avoid anything that contains softwood such as pine or cedar, as the resins in these species are toxic to beetle larvae.

Flake soil, sometimes called kinshi or fermented sawdust, is the gold standard for rhinoceros beetle larvae. High-quality flake soil is produced through a controlled fermentation process using white-rot fungi that break down lignin and cellulose into digestible compounds. Look for products that specify the wood species used and the fermentation duration, as these are markers of a reputable supplier.

For adult feeding products, fruit-based jellies designed for beetles are the most convenient and hygienic option. Look for jellies with high fruit content rather than those loaded with artificial sweeteners or fillers. Clear ingredient lists, appropriate cup sizes, and resealable packaging are practical features that indicate a quality product.

Avoid any food products that contain pesticides, chemical preservatives, or artificial coloring. Invertebrates are extremely sensitive to chemical residues, and even trace amounts of insecticide in substrate or fruit products can be lethal. Products marketed specifically for beetle keeping are generally safer than repurposed garden or reptile substrates.

Larval Substrate Products

The primary food source for Atlas Beetle larvae is decomposed hardwood substrate, and the type and quality of this substrate will determine the ultimate size and health of your adult beetles. Pre-made flake soil is available from specialty invertebrate suppliers and is by far the most reliable option for keepers who want consistent results without the months-long process of fermenting their own substrate.

Commercial flake soil varies significantly in quality. The best products use single-species hardwood that has been fermented for several months under controlled conditions. The finished product should have a uniform, fluffy texture and a mild earthy smell. Any sour or ammonia-like odor indicates improper fermentation, and such substrate should be avoided as it can harm or kill larvae.

Some keepers blend flake soil with supplementary materials such as crushed dried leaves, composted cow manure, or powdered hardwood charcoal. Pre-blended substrates that include these additives can offer a nutritional boost, particularly for late-instar larvae preparing for pupation. Look for blends that list their components clearly and specify the intended beetle species.

Bulk purchasing is often more economical for Atlas Beetle keepers, as a single larva can consume several liters of substrate over its development. Many suppliers offer substrate in compressed bricks that expand when hydrated, which reduces shipping costs and storage space. Ensure that compressed products are free of binding agents that could introduce unwanted chemicals into the larval environment.

Adult Food Options

Adult Atlas Beetles feed on sugary, high-energy foods, and beetle jelly is the most widely used product in captive care. These small cups of fruit-based gel are designed to fit into feeding dishes and provide a mess-free, long-lasting food source. They come in a variety of flavors including banana, brown sugar, and mixed fruit, and most beetles show a clear preference for richer, darker formulations.

Fresh fruit is an excellent supplement to beetle jelly. Ripe banana, mango, melon, peach, and pear are all readily accepted. The fruit should be soft and slightly overripe, which increases the sugar concentration and makes it easier for the beetle to feed with its brushlike mouthparts. Remove uneaten fruit within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth and fruit fly infestations in the enclosure.

Diluted honey or maple syrup dabbed onto a small sponge or cotton pad can serve as an emergency food source when jelly or fresh fruit is unavailable. However, these should not be used as primary foods because they lack the micronutrients found in whole fruit products and can create sticky, unsanitary conditions in the habitat.

Sap-simulating products are a newer category in the beetle food market. These liquid or gel formulations are designed to mimic the composition of tree sap, which is the Atlas Beetle's primary food in the wild. While not yet as widely available as standard beetle jellies, they offer a more naturalistic feeding experience and may encourage more natural foraging behavior in captive beetles.

Supplements & Additives

Calcium supplementation is particularly important for Atlas Beetle larvae, which need large amounts of calcium carbonate to build their thick exoskeletons. Powdered calcium supplements can be mixed directly into flake soil at a ratio recommended by the product label. Crushed cuttlebone, eggshell powder, and food-grade calcium carbonate are all effective sources.

Protein supplements are occasionally used to boost larval growth, especially during the final instar before pupation. Products containing dried fish meal, soy protein, or brewer's yeast can be lightly dusted onto substrate. Use protein additives sparingly, as excessive protein can cause abnormal growth patterns or substrate fouling.

For adults, mineral-enriched beetle jellies provide most of the supplementation needed. Some keepers add a pinch of bee pollen to feeding dishes, which supplies trace minerals, amino acids, and B vitamins. Bee pollen is generally well tolerated by large beetles and may support immune function and reproductive health.

Avoid over-supplementing, as excess nutrients can alter substrate chemistry or create conditions favorable to harmful mold and bacteria. A conservative approach to supplementation, guided by product instructions and observation of your beetles' condition, is always preferable to aggressive dosing.

Foods to Avoid

Citrus fruits should be avoided entirely when feeding adult Atlas Beetles. The high acidity in oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and limes can irritate the beetle's mouthparts and digestive system. Similarly, pineapple contains enzymes that can be harmful to invertebrates and should not be offered.

Never use substrate made from softwood species such as pine, cedar, spruce, or fir for larvae. These woods contain aromatic resins and phenolic compounds that are toxic to beetle larvae and can cause death even at low concentrations. Always verify the wood species listed on any substrate product before purchase.

Processed human foods, including bread, crackers, candy, and dairy products, have no place in an Atlas Beetle's diet. These foods can introduce harmful bacteria, cause substrate contamination, and attract pest insects such as mites and grain beetles. Stick to products specifically formulated for invertebrate keeping or plain fresh fruit.

Pesticide-contaminated produce is a serious and often invisible threat. Commercially grown fruits may carry residues of insecticides that are lethal to beetles. If offering fresh fruit, choose organic options whenever possible, and wash all produce thoroughly before placing it in the enclosure. Even small traces of neonicotinoids or pyrethroids can be fatal to invertebrates.

Feeding Schedule

Atlas Beetle larvae feed continuously and should always have access to fresh substrate. Check substrate volume every one to two weeks, and top off or replace it as the larvae consume and break it down into fine frass. A healthy final-instar larva can process a surprising amount of substrate in a short period, so maintaining an adequate supply is essential to uninterrupted growth.

Substrate moisture levels should be monitored alongside feeding. The material should feel like a wrung-out sponge — moist enough to clump loosely when squeezed but not so wet that water drips out. Overly dry substrate becomes inedible, while waterlogged substrate promotes anaerobic bacterial growth and can suffocate larvae.

Adult Atlas Beetles should be offered fresh food every two to three days. Replace beetle jelly cups when they are mostly consumed or begin to dry out, and remove any uneaten fresh fruit before it begins to mold. Consistent feeding intervals help you monitor your beetles' appetites, which is a useful health indicator.

During the pupal stage, no feeding is required. Larvae will stop eating and construct a pupal cell from compacted substrate and frass. It is critical not to disturb this cell or attempt to offer food during pupation, which can last several weeks. Resume feeding only after the adult beetle has fully eclosed and its exoskeleton has hardened, which typically takes an additional one to two weeks after emergence.
