Atlas Beetles are large and strong enough to handle by hand, but safe handling requires care to avoid injuring the beetle or startling it into flight. Soft-tipped forceps and padded tweezers designed for invertebrate handling are useful for moving smaller individuals, adjusting furnishings around a beetle, or removing debris without disturbing the animal directly.

For routine transfers between enclosures, a simple scoop-and-cover method works best. A shallow plastic dish or deli cup placed in front of the beetle, combined with a gentle nudge from behind using a soft brush, encourages the beetle to walk into the container voluntarily. Purpose-built invertebrate transfer cups with ventilated lids are available and make the process quick and stress-free.

Long-handled spoons and small scoops are indispensable for substrate maintenance and larval care. Larvae should never be handled with bare hands, as the oils and heat from human skin can cause irritation or stress. A broad plastic spoon allows you to lift larvae within a cushion of substrate, minimizing direct contact. Stainless steel spoons work equally well but should be rinsed and dried before use to prevent any chemical contamination.

When handling adult beetles by hand, always support the beetle from below and allow it to grip your fingers with its tarsal claws rather than pinching it from above. The horns of male Atlas Beetles can pinch skin between them if the beetle is grabbed near the head, so approaching from the sides or rear is safest. Calm, slow movements reduce the chance of startling the beetle into opening its wings.

Feeding Dishes & Jelly Holders

Dedicated feeding dishes keep food contained, reduce substrate contamination, and make it easy to monitor consumption. The most practical products are shallow ceramic or plastic dishes with a low lip that the beetle can climb over easily. Avoid tall-sided bowls, as Atlas Beetles will struggle to reach food at the bottom and may tip the dish while attempting to climb in.

Beetle jelly holders are specialty accessories designed with recessed wells that hold standard jelly cups in place. These holders prevent the cups from being pushed around or buried by active beetles, and they keep the jelly elevated slightly above the substrate to reduce moisture absorption from below. Models carved from natural wood are popular because they blend into the enclosure aesthetic.

For keepers offering fresh fruit alongside jelly, a flat feeding platform made from a slice of cork bark or an untreated ceramic tile provides a clean, stable surface. Place the fruit directly on the platform to keep it off the damp substrate, which slows decay and reduces the chance of mold spreading into the bedding.

Multiple feeding stations are recommended for enclosures housing more than one beetle. Competition for a single food source can lead to aggressive interactions and unequal nutrition. Placing two or three jelly holders in different areas of the enclosure ensures that subordinate individuals have reliable access to food without confrontation.

Misting & Humidity Tools

Maintaining appropriate humidity is a daily task for Atlas Beetle keepers, and a reliable misting system is one of the most important accessories in your toolkit. A handheld spray bottle with an adjustable nozzle is the simplest option. Set it to produce a fine mist rather than a heavy stream, as direct jets of water can disturb substrate, startle beetles, and create puddles that promote bacterial growth.

Pressure sprayers with a pump mechanism deliver a more consistent, ultra-fine mist with less hand fatigue than trigger bottles. Models in the one to two liter range are ideal for small to medium collections. They allow you to mist multiple enclosures quickly during routine maintenance without constantly re-pumping.

For keepers managing a larger number of enclosures, a small ultrasonic humidifier positioned near the enclosure area can help maintain ambient humidity without daily manual misting. These units produce a cool fog that disperses evenly and can be connected to a timer for automated operation. Be cautious about over-humidifying the room, as excessive ambient moisture can cause condensation problems on walls and electronics.

Always use dechlorinated water for misting. Tap water treated with chlorine or chloramine can leave residues on the substrate and enclosure surfaces that are harmful to invertebrates over time. Letting tap water sit uncovered for 24 hours allows chlorine to dissipate, or you can use a water conditioner product designed for aquarium use. Distilled water is another reliable option but may lack trace minerals that benefit the enclosure ecosystem.

Measurement & Monitoring Instruments

A digital thermometer and hygrometer combination unit is an essential accessory for every Atlas Beetle enclosure. These compact devices display both temperature and humidity on a single screen and are available with probes that can be placed inside the enclosure while the display remains outside for easy reading. Look for models with accuracy rated to within one degree Celsius and five percent relative humidity.

Substrate moisture meters, commonly sold for gardening applications, provide a quick way to check dampness at different depths within the enclosure. Insert the probe into the substrate near the bottom of the container to ensure that moisture levels are adequate even in the lower layers where larvae feed and where water tends to accumulate. This is far more reliable than judging moisture by surface appearance alone.

A small kitchen or postal scale accurate to one gram is useful for tracking larval weight gain, which is one of the best indicators of health and development. Weighing larvae during substrate changes allows you to chart their growth curve and identify potential problems early. Always weigh larvae in a tared cup of substrate to minimize handling stress.

Calibrating your instruments periodically ensures continued accuracy. Hygrometers in particular are prone to drift over time. Most digital models can be calibrated using a saturated salt solution method, and the process takes only a few minutes. Accurate readings are the foundation of informed husbandry decisions, so investing in quality instruments and maintaining them is well worth the effort.

Cleaning & Maintenance Supplies

Regular cleaning prevents mold, mite infestations, and bacterial buildup, all of which can harm Atlas Beetles. A basic maintenance kit should include a small brush for sweeping frass and debris, a set of dedicated scoops for substrate removal, and a supply of paper towels or reusable cloths for wiping down enclosure walls and lids.

Mild, invertebrate-safe disinfectants are useful for deep cleaning enclosures between inhabitants or when dealing with mold outbreaks. Diluted white vinegar is a commonly recommended option that effectively kills surface bacteria and mold without leaving toxic residues. Avoid bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, and anything with added fragrances, as these leave chemical traces that can be lethal to invertebrates even after rinsing.

Frass sifters, which are essentially fine-mesh screens, allow keepers to separate larval frass from usable substrate during maintenance. This extends the life of expensive flake soil by removing waste while retaining unprocessed material. Sifters are available commercially or can be easily constructed from wooden frames and hardware cloth with an appropriate mesh size.

Disposable gloves are a worthwhile addition to your supply kit. Nitrile gloves prevent oils, lotions, and soap residues on your hands from transferring to substrate or enclosure surfaces. They also protect your hands from substrate-dwelling organisms. Keep a box near your enclosure area so you can glove up quickly during unplanned maintenance tasks.

Transport & Seasonal Supplies

Transporting Atlas Beetles safely requires a ventilated, escape-proof container with enough substrate to cushion the beetle during movement. Small faunarium boxes or deli cups with lids are suitable for short trips. Line the container with damp paper towel or a shallow layer of moist coconut fiber to maintain humidity, and include a small piece of cork bark for the beetle to grip during transit.

For longer journeys or shipping, insulated containers are essential to protect beetles from temperature extremes. Styrofoam-lined shipping boxes, combined with heat packs in cold weather or cold packs in summer, maintain a safe temperature range during transport. Many invertebrate suppliers sell purpose-built shipping kits that include all necessary materials.

Seasonal temperature fluctuations require preparation even for beetles kept indoors. During winter months in heated homes, ambient humidity drops significantly and enclosures may dry out faster than usual. Having spare misting supplies, additional water conditioner, and backup substrate on hand ensures you can maintain proper conditions without emergency shopping trips.

Labeling supplies such as waterproof markers, adhesive labels, and small record cards are often overlooked but prove invaluable for organized beetle keeping. Labeling each enclosure with the beetle's species, sex, date of acquisition, and current life stage prevents confusion, especially in collections with multiple individuals. A simple logbook or printed tracking sheet helps monitor feeding schedules, substrate changes, and weight records over time.
