Space Requirements

Clydesdales demand significantly more space than light horse breeds in virtually every aspect of their housing. A standard 12-by-12-foot stall that works for a Thoroughbred or Quarter Horse is simply inadequate for a horse that may stand 18 hands tall and weigh over a ton. The minimum recommended stall size for a Clydesdale is 14 by 14 feet, with 16 by 16 feet being a far more comfortable and practical choice. Height matters as well, and ceiling clearance should be at least 12 feet to prevent the horse from hitting its head on beams, fixtures, or lighting.

Beyond the stall itself, doorways, aisles, and passageways throughout the barn must accommodate a Clydesdale's width and height. Standard barn doors of 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide are often too tight. Doors should be at least 10 feet high and 5 feet wide, and barn aisles should measure a minimum of 12 feet across to allow the horse to turn and pass safely without scraping against walls or fixtures.

Paddock and turnout space should be generous. Clydesdales benefit from daily turnout for both physical and mental health, and a paddock of at least one to two acres per horse provides adequate room for movement. Fencing must be sturdy enough to contain a draft horse, which means heavier posts, tighter spacing, and materials rated for the forces that a 2,000-pound animal can exert.

Indoor arena or exercise area access is also worth considering for owners in climates with harsh winters or extended wet seasons. A Clydesdale confined to a stall for long periods is at increased risk for stiffness, behavioral problems, and circulatory issues in the lower legs. Adequate space for daily movement is not a luxury but a health requirement.

Stalls and Barn Design

Stall construction for Clydesdales requires heavier-duty materials than what is standard for lighter breeds. Wall panels should be a minimum of two inches thick, constructed from hardwood or reinforced with steel kick plates along the lower four feet. Draft horses are not typically destructive, but their sheer mass means that even casual leaning or shifting can stress lightweight construction over time.

Flooring is a critical decision in stall design. Rubber stall mats over a well-graded and compacted base of crushed stone or gravel provide the best combination of cushioning, traction, and drainage. For a Clydesdale, the extra joint support offered by thick rubber mats is especially valuable given the strain that body weight places on legs and hooves. Mats should be heavy enough to stay in place under a draft horse and should be removable for periodic cleaning and drainage inspection.

Ventilation ranks among the most important barn design considerations. Clydesdales produce more body heat and more waste than smaller horses, both of which increase ammonia levels and humidity in an enclosed space. Ridge vents, cupolas, adjustable windows, and strategically placed fans ensure adequate air exchange. Poor ventilation contributes to respiratory issues, and draft breeds with their heavy feathering are already more susceptible to skin conditions that thrive in damp, stagnant environments.

Lighting should be both functional and natural. Stalls with windows or translucent panels benefit the horse's circadian rhythm and general well-being. Artificial lighting should be positioned above the reach of even the tallest Clydesdale, and all electrical conduits should be enclosed and rodent-proof to prevent hazards.

Bedding and Flooring

Bedding choice directly impacts a Clydesdale's comfort, respiratory health, and the workload involved in stall maintenance. Straw has been the traditional bedding for draft horses and remains popular because it provides excellent cushioning and is generally palatable if the horse chooses to nibble. Wheat straw is preferred over oat straw for bedding because it is less likely to be eaten in large quantities. However, straw can be dusty and requires frequent complete replacement.

Wood shavings are the most common alternative to straw. Kiln-dried pine shavings offer good absorbency, relatively low dust, and easy spot-cleaning. They are widely available and reasonably priced, though the volume needed for a Clydesdale-sized stall can make costs add up. Avoid shavings from black walnut, which are toxic to horses and can cause laminitis on contact.

Pelleted bedding made from compressed wood or paper fiber is gaining popularity for draft horse stalls. These products expand when moistened, absorb urine efficiently, and produce less dust than traditional shavings. They also tend to reduce the total volume of waste produced, which can offset a higher per-bag purchase price. The tradeoff is that pelleted bedding provides less cushion than a deep straw bed, so it works best when used over quality rubber mats.

Regardless of bedding type, Clydesdale stalls require more material and more frequent cleaning than standard horse stalls. A 16-by-16-foot stall needs roughly twice the bedding volume of a 12-by-12 stall, and the waste output of a draft horse is proportionally larger. Daily removal of manure and wet spots, with a full strip and rebedding on a regular cycle, keeps the environment healthy and minimizes the risk of thrush and other hoof conditions.

Outdoor Shelters and Run-In Sheds

For Clydesdales kept primarily on pasture, a well-designed run-in shed is essential. These open-front structures provide protection from wind, rain, sun, and insects while allowing the horse to come and go freely. A run-in shed for a single Clydesdale should measure at least 12 by 16 feet, with larger dimensions necessary for multiple horses to prevent crowding and territorial disputes at the entrance.

The orientation of a run-in shed matters significantly. In most climates, positioning the open face away from the prevailing wind direction provides the best protection. In regions with variable wind patterns, a three-sided shed with a slight overhang on the open side balances airflow with weather protection. The roof should extend far enough beyond the walls to prevent rain from blowing into the interior.

Construction should be robust. Posts set in concrete, heavy-gauge metal roofing, and kick-resistant interior walls ensure the structure withstands both weather and equine use. The floor of a run-in shed benefits from a base of crushed stone topped with gravel or rubber mats, providing drainage and a dry standing surface even during prolonged wet weather. A bare dirt floor will quickly become a mud pit under the hooves of a draft horse.

Shade is an often-underestimated component of outdoor housing. Clydesdales, with their dark bay coloring and heavy muscling, can overheat more readily than lighter breeds during summer months. Trees, shade sails, or the run-in shed itself should provide reliable shade during peak sun hours, and fresh water should always be accessible in or near the sheltered area.

Climate Considerations

Clydesdales are a breed of Scottish origin and are naturally well-suited to cold, damp climates. Their dense winter coat and substantial body mass provide effective insulation against cold temperatures, and healthy adults in good body condition can tolerate freezing weather without supplemental blanketing in most cases. However, a dry shelter out of wind and precipitation remains essential even for cold-hardy horses.

Heat and humidity present a greater challenge. Clydesdales generate significant metabolic heat, and their heavy feathering and thick coats can make thermoregulation difficult in warm climates. Fans in barns and stalls, access to shade, and unlimited fresh water are minimum requirements during hot weather. Clipping the body coat and trimming feathering in summer can help, though this is a management decision that depends on the horse's use and the owner's preferences.

Mud management is one of the most persistent challenges in Clydesdale housing. Their large hooves and heavy weight churn soft ground quickly, and the breed's signature feathering traps moisture against the skin, creating ideal conditions for scratches, mud fever, and other dermatological problems. High-traffic areas around gates, water troughs, and feeding stations should be reinforced with gravel, geotextile fabric, or concrete pads to prevent mud accumulation.

In regions with extreme weather, whether bitter cold, intense heat, or severe storms, the barn or primary shelter should be engineered to handle the worst conditions the area experiences. Snow load ratings, wind bracing, lightning protection, and emergency ventilation all factor into a well-planned equine facility for draft horses.

Multi-Horse Facilities

Housing multiple Clydesdales or mixing Clydesdales with other horses and livestock requires careful planning. While Clydesdales are generally docile and sociable, their size means that even minor disagreements can cause significant damage to facilities and injuries to smaller animals. Stall dividers should be solid and at least five feet high, with grillwork above for ventilation and social contact.

Shared turnout can work well if horses are introduced gradually and monitored for compatibility. Paddock size should increase with each additional horse, and multiple water and feeding stations help reduce competition and the aggression that can arise around limited resources. A general guideline is at least one acre per horse, with additional space strongly recommended for groups.

If Clydesdales share a property with smaller horse breeds, ponies, or livestock, physical separation during feeding is essential. A Clydesdale can easily dominate a smaller animal at a shared feeder, and the size disparity means that any confrontation carries risk of injury to the smaller animal. Run-in sheds and shelters in shared pastures should be large enough that all animals can enter simultaneously without conflict.

Barn layout for a multi-horse facility should prioritize flow and safety. Wide aisles, clearly marked stalls, and designated grooming and tacking areas reduce congestion and the risk of accidental contact between horses. Fire safety planning is also critical in any multi-stall barn, including multiple exits, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and an evacuation plan that accounts for the time needed to move large draft horses to safety.
