Space Requirements

Arabians are an active and socially engaged breed that benefits from ample space for movement and interaction. A standard box stall for an Arabian should measure at least 12 by 12 feet, though many owners prefer 12 by 14 feet to give the horse more room to move comfortably, lie down, and roll without risk of becoming cast against a wall. Stallions and horses prone to restlessness or stall-walking may benefit from even larger enclosures.

Turnout space is equally important and arguably more critical to the Arabian's overall wellbeing than stall size. Arabians are intelligent, curious horses that can develop behavioral vices quickly when confined for extended periods. A minimum of several hours of daily turnout in a paddock or pasture is strongly recommended. The ideal scenario for most Arabians is a combination of stall access for feeding and shelter with free-choice turnout during the majority of the day.

Paddock sizing depends on the number of horses and the quality of forage, but a general guideline is at least one acre per horse for pasture turnout and a minimum of roughly 600 to 1,000 square feet per horse for a dry lot or sacrifice paddock. Larger turnout areas allow for natural movement patterns including trotting and cantering, which support musculoskeletal health and mental stimulation.

Fencing should be safe, visible, and tall enough to discourage jumping. Arabians are athletic and some individuals can clear surprisingly tall obstacles when motivated. Board fencing, vinyl rail, and properly installed high-tensile polymer fencing are all suitable options. Avoid barbed wire, which causes serious injuries, and thin wire fencing that horses may not see.

Stall Design & Barn Layout

A well-designed stall provides safety, ventilation, and comfort. Stall walls should be solid to a height of about four and a half feet to prevent pawing injuries and kicking through to adjacent stalls, with open bars or mesh above that height to allow airflow and social interaction between horses. The spacing between bars should be narrow enough to prevent a horse from getting a hoof or jaw caught, typically no more than three inches apart.

Flooring is one of the most impactful decisions in stall construction. Rubber stall mats over a compacted base of crushed limestone or clay provide excellent cushioning, reduce bedding use, and are easy to clean. Concrete alone is too hard on joints for prolonged standing and becomes dangerously slippery when wet. If concrete is already in place, thick rubber mats are essential. Poor air quality from ammonia buildup, dust, and mold spores contributes to respiratory conditions that are entirely preventable with proper barn design. Ridge vents, cupolas, open eaves, and strategically placed windows or doors should create consistent air exchange without subjecting horses to direct drafts at body level. The goal is to feel fresh air moving through the barn at all times without creating wind tunnels.

Barn layout should prioritize safe traffic flow for both horses and handlers. Wide aisles of at least 10 to 12 feet accommodate grooming and tacking without crowding. Feed and tack rooms should be secured with horse-proof latches, as Arabians are notoriously clever at opening doors and gates. Bedding & Stall Maintenance

Bedding serves three primary purposes in a horse stall: cushioning for joints, absorption of urine and moisture, and insulation against cold flooring. The most common bedding materials for horses include wood shavings, straw, pelleted bedding, and shredded paper or cardboard products. Each has distinct advantages and trade-offs related to dust levels, absorbency, cost, and disposal.

Wood shavings are the most widely used bedding and work well for most Arabians. Look for kiln-dried, dust-extracted shavings to minimize respiratory irritation. Never use shavings from black walnut wood, which causes severe laminitis on contact with a horse's skin. Pelleted bedding made from compressed wood fiber expands when wet and offers superior absorbency with less overall volume, making it a good choice for barns with limited manure storage.

Straw provides a comfortable, warm bed and is preferred by some owners for foaling stalls because it does not cling to wet newborns. However, straw is less absorbent than wood products, can harbor mold if not stored properly, and some horses eat their bedding, which adds unwanted calories and can cause digestive issues. Wheat straw is generally preferred over oat straw for this reason, as horses find it less palatable.

Stall cleaning should happen at least once daily, with wet spots and manure removed promptly. A thorough weekly strip and rebedding helps prevent ammonia buildup at floor level. Maintaining a clean, dry stall environment reduces the risk of thrush, skin conditions, and respiratory problems while also keeping bedding costs manageable over time.

Run-In Sheds & Field Shelters

For Arabians kept primarily on pasture, a run-in shed or field shelter provides essential protection from sun, wind, rain, and insects without the confinement of a traditional stall. The basic design is a three-sided structure open on the side facing away from prevailing winds, allowing horses to enter and exit freely. This aligns well with the Arabian's preference for freedom of movement and choice.

Sizing guidelines suggest a minimum of roughly 12 by 12 feet per horse, with additional space for each horse sharing the structure. In multi-horse situations, a wider opening or a second shelter prevents dominant horses from blocking access and ensures all animals can use the shelter comfortably. Observing herd dynamics during inclement weather helps determine whether your shelter arrangement is adequate.

Construction should be sturdy enough to withstand wind loads and the occasional horse rubbing or leaning against support posts. Placement matters as much as design. Position the shelter on high ground with good drainage, oriented so the open side faces away from the direction of prevailing storms. Proximity to water sources and feeding areas reduces unnecessary travel during severe weather. In hot climates, consider adding shade cloth extensions or planting trees nearby to expand the shaded area beyond the shelter footprint.

Climate Considerations

Despite their desert origins, Arabians have adapted remarkably well to a wide range of climates. Their fine coat and relatively thin skin make them more sensitive to extreme cold than heavier breeds, but they grow a functional winter coat when exposed to natural light cycles and gradual temperature changes. In regions with harsh winters, appropriate blanketing and access to dry shelter become important management tools.

Heat management is generally more intuitive for Arabian owners, as the breed handles warm weather well. However, high humidity combined with heat can still cause dangerous levels of heat stress during exercise. Adequate shade, continuous access to clean water, and fans or misting systems in barn areas help horses regulate body temperature during summer months. Turnout schedules may need to shift to early morning and evening during peak heat periods.

Insulation and ventilation in barns must be balanced seasonally. In cold climates, the temptation to seal a barn tightly against winter drafts leads to dangerous air quality problems. A properly ventilated barn will feel cooler in winter than an airtight one, but the air quality will be dramatically better. Horses tolerate cold temperatures far better than they tolerate ammonia and dust-laden air. Blankets and adequate forage for metabolic heat production are preferable to closing up the barn.

Mud management is a year-round concern in many regions and directly affects hoof health and housing quality. Geotextile fabric topped with several inches of gravel in high-traffic areas around gates, water troughs, and shelter entrances prevents the deep mud that leads to thrush, scratches, and other skin conditions. French drains and proper grading around structures direct water away from areas where horses spend the most time.

Multi-Horse Facilities

Arabians are generally social horses that thrive with equine companionship, but managing a multi-horse facility requires thoughtful planning around space, feeding, and herd dynamics. Individual stalls with visual and limited physical contact between neighbors satisfy social needs while preventing injuries from kicking or biting. Stall placement should account for known personality conflicts and pair compatible neighbors when possible.

Group turnout works well for many Arabians, provided the pasture or paddock is large enough to allow subordinate horses to move away from dominant individuals. Introducing new horses to an established group should be done gradually, ideally through an adjacent paddock where horses can interact over a safe fence for several days before sharing space. Removing hind shoes during the introduction period reduces the severity of any kicks that occur.

Feeding in a group setting requires enough space and feeding stations to prevent resource guarding. A general rule is to provide at least one more feeding station than the number of horses and space them far enough apart that a dominant horse cannot control multiple stations simultaneously. Slow-feed hay nets hung at appropriate heights at multiple locations around the paddock distribute the herd and reduce competition.

Shared water sources should be large enough that multiple horses can drink simultaneously without conflict. Automatic waterers with sufficient flow rates work well in stalls, while large troughs are preferable in pasture settings. Position troughs away from corners where a submissive horse could be trapped, and check water availability multiple times daily to ensure all horses are drinking adequately.
