Flat leather halters or padded nylon halters with adjustable crownpieces and nosebands are generally the best options. The breed's head shape tends toward narrow and elongated, with prominent cheekbones and a refined jawline, so halters designed for broader-headed breeds often fit poorly, creating pressure points under the jaw or behind the ears.
Breakaway halters are strongly recommended for any horse turned out with a halter on, and they are particularly important for the athletic, reactive Akhal-Teke. A breakaway design features a leather crown or a breakaway snap that releases under extreme pressure, preventing the horse from becoming fatally trapped if the halter catches on a fence post, feeder, or tree. The modest additional cost of a breakaway halter is negligible compared to the catastrophic injuries that a fixed halter can cause.
Lead ropes should be long enough to allow safe handling distance, typically ten to twelve feet, and made from a material that provides good grip without being abrasive. Cotton or yacht-braid leads are comfortable in the hand and gentle on the horse's poll. Chain shanks are occasionally necessary for particularly exuberant individuals in specific handling situations, but should be used with education and restraint, as rough chain use on a thin-skinned breed like the Akhal-Teke can cause significant discomfort and erode trust.
Saddle fit is perhaps the most critical tack consideration for the Akhal-Teke. The breed's high, narrow withers, long back, and flat-to-slightly-concave topline make standard saddle trees a poor fit for many individuals. An improperly fitted saddle creates pressure points that cause pain, restrict movement, and can produce lasting damage to the back muscles and spine. Professional saddle fitting is a worthwhile investment, and adjustable tree or treeless saddle systems are increasingly popular options for breeds with atypical conformations.
