Tank Size & Space Requirements

Snowball Shrimp are small invertebrates, but that does not mean they belong in tiny containers. A minimum tank size of five gallons is recommended for a starter colony, and ten gallons is strongly preferred. Larger water volumes are far more stable in terms of temperature, pH, and dissolved waste concentrations. In a very small tank, a single overfeeding or a missed water change can produce a lethal ammonia spike in hours rather than days.

The footprint of the tank matters as much as the total volume. Shrimp are primarily bottom dwellers that spend most of their time grazing across the substrate and lower surfaces. A long, shallow tank with a wide base provides more usable floor space than a tall, narrow tank of the same volume. This additional surface area also supports more biofilm growth, which is a continuous natural food source for the colony.

As a colony grows, stocking density becomes an important consideration. Snowball Shrimp breed readily in stable conditions, and a population can double in a matter of months. Starting with a tank that has room for expansion saves the expense and disruption of upgrading later. Planning for a colony of 50 to 100 shrimp from the outset is a practical approach even if you begin with only ten or fifteen individuals.

Placement in the home should also factor into your tank selection. Shrimp tanks should be kept away from windows with direct sunlight, which promotes uncontrollable algae growth and temperature swings. A sturdy, level surface away from high-traffic areas and vibration sources like speakers or washing machines gives the colony a calmer, more consistent environment.

Substrate & Bottom Structure

Substrate choice has a direct impact on water chemistry, biofilm development, and the overall well-being of a Snowball Shrimp colony. Inert substrates like fine gravel or sand do not alter water parameters and are a safe, neutral choice. Active substrates designed for planted tanks can lower pH and soften water, which may or may not be appropriate depending on your local tap water chemistry. For Snowball Shrimp, which tolerate a fairly wide pH range, an inert substrate is usually the simpler and more predictable option.

Grain size affects both shrimp behavior and tank maintenance. Very fine sand compacts over time and can develop anaerobic pockets that release toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. Coarse gravel allows uneaten food and waste to fall between the gaps, making it harder to keep the substrate clean. A medium-grain substrate or a fine, rounded gravel in the one-to-three-millimeter range strikes a good balance for shrimp keeping.

Dark-colored substrates tend to make Snowball Shrimp more visually striking because the white coloration of the shrimp stands out against a contrasting background. This is purely an aesthetic consideration, but it is worth noting because many keepers choose shrimp in part for their visual appeal. Substrate color has no measurable effect on shrimp health or behavior.

Adding a thin layer of mineral-rich substrate or scattering crushed coral beneath the main substrate layer can provide a slow-release source of calcium and buffer pH stability. This is especially useful in regions with very soft tap water where mineral depletion between water changes can cause pH swings. The mineral layer does not need to be thick — a half-inch base beneath two inches of primary substrate is typically sufficient.

Filtration Systems

Filtration is the single most critical piece of equipment in any shrimp tank, and for Snowball Shrimp, the filter type must be chosen with safety in mind. Sponge filters are the gold standard for shrimp keeping because they provide biological filtration without any risk of trapping or injuring small shrimp and shrimplets. The sponge surface also becomes a grazing site as biofilm colonizes it, turning the filter into a supplemental food source.

If you prefer a hang-on-back or canister filter for its higher flow capacity, the intake tube must be covered with a fine sponge pre-filter or a stainless steel mesh guard. Without this protection, baby shrimp and even smaller adults can be pulled into the intake and killed. Pre-filter sponges are inexpensive and widely available, and installing one is a non-negotiable step when using any power filter in a shrimp tank.

Flow rate is another consideration. Snowball Shrimp are not strong swimmers, and excessive current creates stress, particularly for juveniles and berried females. Gentle, steady circulation is ideal. If your filter produces more flow than the shrimp are comfortable with, a spray bar attachment or baffle can diffuse the output and reduce the current to a more manageable level.

Biological filtration capacity should be slightly oversized relative to the current colony population. A thriving shrimp colony grows quickly, and the bacterial bed in the filter needs to keep pace with increasing bioload. Running a filter rated for a tank one size up from your actual tank volume gives a comfortable margin. Avoid disrupting the biological media during cleaning — rinse it in old tank water rather than tap water to preserve the beneficial bacteria.

Heating & Temperature Control

Snowball Shrimp are adaptable to a relatively wide temperature range of roughly 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes them one of the more forgiving dwarf shrimp species when it comes to temperature management. In many homes, room temperature falls comfortably within this range, and a heater may not be necessary at all. However, if your home experiences significant temperature drops at night or during winter months, a reliable aquarium heater provides an important safety net.

Adjustable heaters with a built-in thermostat are preferable to preset models because they allow you to dial in a specific target temperature. For Snowball Shrimp, a stable temperature in the 72 to 76 degree range is a comfortable sweet spot that supports active breeding without pushing metabolic rates too high. Consistency matters more than hitting an exact number — shrimp tolerate a range but react poorly to rapid swings.

Heater placement within the tank should promote even heat distribution. Positioning the heater near the filter output ensures that warmed water is circulated throughout the tank rather than creating a hot zone near the heater and a cool zone elsewhere. In larger tanks, two smaller heaters placed at opposite ends provide more uniform heating than a single unit.

A separate thermometer is essential regardless of whether your heater has a built-in temperature display. Heater thermostats can drift over time or fail entirely, and an independent thermometer gives you a reliable cross-check. Digital thermometers with external probes are more accurate than adhesive strip thermometers and allow you to monitor temperature at substrate level where the shrimp spend most of their time.

Lighting & Plant Integration

Lighting in a Snowball Shrimp tank serves two purposes: supporting live plant growth and providing a consistent day-night cycle that helps regulate shrimp behavior. A standard aquarium LED light on a timer set for eight to ten hours per day is sufficient for most low to moderate light plants and provides a stable photoperiod. Excessive lighting durations promote nuisance algae growth, which can smother plants and coat surfaces in ways that are difficult to reverse.

Live plants are highly beneficial in a shrimp tank and should be considered a near-essential component of the housing setup. Java moss, java fern, anubias, and floating plants like water lettuce or salvinia provide hiding places for molting shrimp and shelter for newborn shrimplets. The dense structure of moss in particular gives baby shrimp a safe refuge where they can graze on biofilm without exposure to potential predators or aggressive tankmates.

Plants also contribute to water quality by absorbing nitrates and providing oxygen through photosynthesis. In a well-planted shrimp tank, nitrate levels between water changes tend to be noticeably lower than in bare tanks. This biological filtration supplement reduces the frequency and urgency of water changes, which is a significant advantage because shrimp are sensitive to the parameter shifts that large water changes can introduce.

When selecting plants, avoid species that require fertilizers containing copper or heavy metals. Many comprehensive planted tank fertilizers include copper as a micronutrient for plant growth, and even small doses are lethal to shrimp. Look for invertebrate-safe fertilizer lines or choose hardy, low-demand plants that thrive without supplemental fertilization. Tissue-cultured plants are also a safer choice than wild-collected or farm-grown specimens because they arrive free of pesticide residues and hitchhiker organisms.

Maintenance Equipment & Water Change Gear

Routine maintenance is the backbone of long-term success with Snowball Shrimp, and having the right equipment makes the process efficient and safe. A small-diameter siphon or gravel vacuum designed for nano tanks is essential for removing detritus from the substrate without accidentally sucking up shrimp. Standard aquarium siphons designed for larger tanks can generate too much suction for a five or ten gallon shrimp setup, so look for models with a narrower tube and gentler flow.

A fine mesh net or shrimp-specific catching cup is useful for any situation where you need to move individual shrimp. Standard fish nets can injure shrimp by catching their legs and antennae in the mesh. Nets with an ultra-fine weave or solid-walled catching containers designed for invertebrates prevent these injuries and reduce the stress of handling.

Buckets and containers used for water changes should be dedicated to aquarium use only and never used for household cleaning products. Even trace residues of soap, detergent, or disinfectant can be lethal to shrimp. Labeling your aquarium buckets clearly and storing them separately from household supplies prevents accidental contamination.

Water testing supplies are a non-negotiable part of the maintenance toolkit. A liquid test kit that covers ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and general hardness gives you the data needed to catch problems before they become emergencies. Test strips are convenient but less accurate. For a shrimp-focused tank where parameter precision matters, investing in a reliable liquid test kit pays for itself many times over in avoided losses. A TDS meter is another inexpensive tool that provides a quick snapshot of dissolved mineral content between full test sessions.
