Liquid reagent test kits that measure ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, general hardness, and carbonate hardness provide the data you need to keep water parameters within the safe range for Snowball Shrimp. Test strips offer convenience but sacrifice accuracy, which is a poor trade-off when you are managing an environment for animals as parameter-sensitive as freshwater shrimp.

A TDS meter is an inexpensive handheld device that measures total dissolved solids in parts per million. For shrimp keepers, TDS readings provide a quick snapshot of overall mineral content between full test sessions. Snowball Shrimp generally do well in a TDS range of 150 to 250 parts per million. A sudden change in TDS between water tests can alert you to problems before they become visible in shrimp behavior or health.

Water conditioners that neutralize chlorine and chloramine are essential for any water change. Tap water in most municipal systems contains disinfectants that are lethal to shrimp at concentrations that are perfectly safe for human consumption. A dechlorinating conditioner should be dosed into replacement water before it enters the tank, not added to the tank afterward. Some conditioners also bind heavy metals and detoxify ammonia temporarily, which provides an additional safety margin during water changes.

Remineralizing products are necessary if you use reverse osmosis, distilled, or other purified water sources. These powdered or liquid additives restore the calcium, magnesium, and trace minerals that shrimp require for molting and general health. Even keepers who use tap water may benefit from a light remineralizer if their local water is unusually soft. Mixing remineralized water to a target TDS before adding it to the tank ensures that each water change delivers consistent parameters.

Nets, Traps & Handling Tools

Handling Snowball Shrimp requires tools designed specifically for small, delicate invertebrates. Standard aquarium fish nets are too coarse for shrimp — their legs, antennae, and swimmerets catch in the mesh, causing injury or limb loss. Fine-mesh shrimp nets with a soft, tightly woven material allow you to scoop shrimp without entanglement. The net frame should be small enough to maneuver easily in a five or ten gallon tank without displacing hardscape.

Clear acrylic or glass catching cups offer an even gentler alternative to nets. These small containers can be submerged and positioned near a shrimp, then slowly tilted or guided so the shrimp walks or swims into the cup. This method avoids physical contact entirely and is the least stressful way to move individual shrimp between tanks or into a quarantine container.

Shrimp traps are useful for selectively removing specific individuals from a colony without disturbing the entire tank. Baited traps use a small food lure inside a container with a one-way entry. Shrimp enter to feed and cannot easily find the exit. These traps are particularly handy for culling, separating berried females, or removing shrimp that need to be rehomed. They work best when left in place for several hours or overnight.

Aquascaping tweezers with curved tips are especially useful for planting stem plants and adjusting moss. A good pair of aquascaping tweezers handles most of the routine tasks that would otherwise require reaching into the tank.

Cleaning & Maintenance Accessories

A nano-sized gravel vacuum or siphon is essential for substrate cleaning in shrimp tanks. Full-sized aquarium siphons designed for larger tanks generate too much suction for a small shrimp setup and can easily pull shrimp, shrimplets, and substrate into the tube. Nano siphons with a narrower tube diameter and gentler flow allow you to spot-clean the substrate around feeding areas and in corners where detritus accumulates without endangering the colony.

Algae scrapers and magnetic glass cleaners keep the viewing panels clear without requiring you to drain the tank or submerge your arms. For shrimp tanks, a small handheld scraper with a plastic blade is safer than a metal-bladed scraper, which can scratch acrylic tanks and dislodge silicone seals if used aggressively near the edges. Magnetic cleaners that pinch both sides of the glass are convenient for regular maintenance but should be checked periodically for trapped sand or gravel particles that can scratch the glass.

Dedicated aquarium buckets, cups, and towels should be kept separate from any household cleaning supplies. Shrimp are extraordinarily sensitive to chemical contamination, and even trace residues of soap, disinfectant, or household cleaner can wipe out a colony. Labeling your aquarium buckets clearly and storing them in a dedicated space eliminates the risk of cross-contamination. This is a simple precaution that prevents one of the most common and avoidable causes of shrimp loss.

Pipettes and turkey basters are surprisingly useful accessories for targeted feeding and spot cleaning. A pipette can deliver powdered food directly to a group of baby shrimp, remove a small amount of uneaten food from the substrate, or suck up a dead shrimp without disturbing the surrounding area. Having a couple of different sizes on hand gives you precision control over small tasks that would be awkward with larger tools.

Drip Acclimation & Transfer Equipment

Drip acclimation is the safest method for introducing new Snowball Shrimp to a tank, and the equipment required is minimal but essential. A length of standard airline tubing, a control valve or knot to regulate flow, and a small container to hold the shrimp during acclimation are all you need. The process involves slowly dripping tank water into the container holding the new shrimp over a period of one to two hours, allowing them to gradually adjust to the new water chemistry without shock.

Acclimation containers should be clean, chemical-free, and large enough to hold the shipping water plus the volume of tank water that will drip in over the acclimation period. A one-quart or one-liter container works well for small batches of shrimp. Opaque or darkened containers can help reduce stress during the process by limiting visual stimulation while the shrimp adjust.

The drip rate during acclimation should be slow — roughly two to three drops per second is a commonly recommended pace. Over the course of an hour or two at this rate, the water chemistry in the acclimation container gradually shifts from the shipping parameters to the tank parameters. Rushing this process by pouring tank water directly into the container or shortening the acclimation time significantly increases the risk of osmotic shock, which can kill shrimp hours or even days after introduction.

After acclimation is complete, shrimp should be gently netted or cupped out of the acclimation container and placed into the tank. The acclimation water itself should be discarded rather than poured into the tank. Shipping water often contains elevated ammonia from the shrimp's own waste during transit, and introducing it to the display tank adds unnecessary pollutants. This final step is a small detail that protects the established tank environment.

Breeding & Colony Management Supplies

As a Snowball Shrimp colony grows, a few specialized accessories become increasingly useful. A breeder box or isolation container that hangs inside the main tank allows you to separate berried females, newly hatched shrimplets, or shrimp that appear stressed or injured without setting up an entirely separate tank. These containers maintain the same water parameters as the main tank while providing physical separation.

Magnifying glasses or jeweler's loupes help with observing small details that are difficult to see with the naked eye. Checking whether a female is carrying eggs, inspecting a shrimp for signs of disease or parasites, and counting shrimplets in a dense moss clump are all tasks that benefit from magnification. A simple handheld magnifier with five to ten times magnification is sufficient for most observation needs.

Small plastic containers with tight-fitting lids are essential for portioning and storing dry shrimp food. Many shrimp foods come in quantities that far exceed what a single colony will consume before the food degrades in quality. Dividing a large package into smaller weekly portions stored in airtight containers preserves freshness and prevents moisture from clumping or spoiling the food. Storing the main supply in a cool, dark location extends shelf life further.

Labeling supplies such as waterproof markers and adhesive labels help you track important information directly on the tank or on nearby equipment. Recording the date of the last water change, the current TDS reading, or the date a new batch of shrimp was introduced gives you a quick visual reference without needing to check a separate log. For keepers managing multiple tanks or colonies, clear labeling prevents mix-ups and keeps maintenance schedules on track.

Backup & Emergency Supplies

Every shrimp keeper should maintain a small inventory of emergency supplies that can be deployed quickly when something goes wrong. A backup heater, even an inexpensive preset model, can save a colony if the primary heater fails during a cold snap. Heater failures are one of the most common equipment emergencies in aquarium keeping, and the window between failure and dangerous temperature drop can be very short in a small tank.

A battery-operated air pump is critical insurance against power outages. Without filtration and surface agitation, oxygen levels in a small, stocked tank can plummet within hours. A battery air pump connected to a sponge filter or an air stone keeps the water oxygenated and maintains minimal circulation until power is restored. These pumps are inexpensive and can run for 12 to 24 hours on a set of batteries.

A container of activated carbon or chemical filtration media should be kept on hand for water quality emergencies. If you accidentally introduce a contaminant to the tank — a stray drop of hand lotion, an untested decoration that leaches chemicals, or a water conditioner overdose — adding activated carbon to the filter can adsorb the offending substance and buy you time to perform corrective water changes.

A small quarantine container, even a simple two-gallon bucket with a sponge filter and heater, gives you a place to isolate sick or newly acquired shrimp without exposing the main colony to potential pathogens. Quarantining new arrivals for two to four weeks before introducing them to the display tank is a best practice that prevents disease transmission. The quarantine setup does not need to be elaborate, but it does need to be available and ready to deploy at short notice.
