Snowball Shrimp are omnivorous scavengers that thrive on a varied diet combining plant-based matter with small amounts of protein. In the wild, they feed on biofilm, algae, decaying plant material, and microorganisms that coat submerged surfaces. Replicating this diversity in a home aquarium is the foundation of good shrimp nutrition and directly impacts molting success, coloration, and breeding rates.
Calcium and mineral intake are especially important for Snowball Shrimp because they molt regularly as they grow. Without adequate calcium and trace minerals, molting failures become more frequent and can be fatal. Foods and supplements that provide bioavailable calcium should be a consistent part of the feeding rotation rather than an afterthought.
Protein requirements are modest compared to carnivorous fish, but they are not negligible. Breeding females and juveniles have slightly higher protein demands. A diet that leans too heavily on plant matter alone can slow growth and reduce reproductive output. Balancing protein and vegetable content across the weekly feeding schedule keeps a colony in peak condition.
Overfeeding is one of the most common mistakes new shrimp keepers make. Snowball Shrimp have tiny stomachs and a tank full of biofilm already provides a baseline level of nutrition. Uneaten food decomposes quickly in warm water, spiking ammonia and nitrite levels that are far more dangerous to shrimp than to most fish.
