In the wild, they inhabit dynamic environments filled with plants, leaf litter, roots, and shifting water conditions that constantly engage their senses. A bare or static aquarium fails to replicate these conditions and can lead to lethargy, stress, and dull coloration over time.

Enrichment for fish differs fundamentally from enrichment for mammals or birds. Rather than physical toys that a fish manipulates, enrichment for killifish centers on creating a complex, stimulating environment that encourages natural behaviors such as exploring, hunting, hiding, and displaying. The goal is a tank that offers enough variety and change to keep the fish actively engaged with their surroundings.

Male killifish in particular are highly visual animals that spend considerable energy on territorial displays and courtship. An enriched environment gives them surfaces to patrol, sight lines to defend, and competitors to interact with in controlled ways. Females benefit from hiding spots and varied terrain that allow them to choose when and where to interact with males.

Seasonal or periodic changes to the tank layout also serve as enrichment. Rearranging plants, adding new driftwood, or introducing different leaf litter every few weeks provides novelty that stimulates exploratory behavior. Fish that have mapped every corner of an unchanging tank have nothing left to investigate, and this monotony can suppress natural activity levels.

They transform a glass box into a living ecosystem with changing growth patterns, microfauna, and constantly evolving structure. Alternating between dropping food at different corners or along different edges stimulates hunting and exploratory behavior.

Live foods provide unmatched enrichment because they trigger predatory instincts. Watching killifish stalk, chase, and capture live daphnia, brine shrimp, or mosquito larvae reveals a level of focus and athleticism that prepared foods cannot elicit. Even occasional live food sessions, once or twice a week, provide meaningful mental and physical stimulation.

Frozen foods presented in feeding rings or small dishes concentrate the fish's attention in specific areas and create a social feeding event. Lighting changes throughout the day create a natural rhythm that enriches killifish behavior. A gradual dawn-to-dusk cycle using a dimmable LED on a timer mimics natural light patterns and encourages the full range of daily behaviors, from morning feeding activity to late-afternoon courtship displays and evening rest. Abrupt on-off lighting, by contrast, startles fish and disrupts natural behavioral cycles.

Mirrors placed temporarily against the outside of the tank glass can trigger display behavior in male killifish, who interpret their reflection as a rival. This technique should be used sparingly and for short durations of five to ten minutes to avoid chronic stress. Water parameter variation within safe ranges can also serve as enrichment for hardier species. Slight temperature fluctuations that mimic seasonal changes, or periodic water changes with slightly different parameters, can trigger spawning behavior and other natural responses. This approach requires careful monitoring and should only be attempted by experienced keepers who understand the tolerance ranges of their specific species.

DIY & Low-Cost Enrichment Ideas

Effective killifish enrichment does not require expensive equipment. A handful of dried leaves collected from pesticide-free oak or almond trees provides weeks of enrichment value as the leaves decompose and foster microfauna. Boil or soak the leaves briefly before adding them to the tank to ensure they sink and to eliminate any surface contaminants.

Spawning mops made from acrylic yarn are a classic DIY killifish accessory that doubles as enrichment. Tie lengths of dark-colored yarn to a cork or foam float and let the strands dangle into the water column. Killifish will investigate, rest among, and eventually spawn in these mops. Making several mops in different colors or lengths adds variety to the tank structure.

Small terracotta pots from garden centers cost very little and can be arranged in various configurations to create caves, tunnels, and territorial boundaries. Breaking a pot in half creates an open shelter, while stacking pieces creates multi-level structures. Soak new terracotta in water for a day before use to leach any residual dust or manufacturing compounds.

Rearranging existing décor every two to three weeks is the simplest free enrichment strategy. Moving plants to different positions, rotating driftwood, or shifting stone arrangements forces fish to re-explore and re-map their territory. This periodic disruption prevents behavioral stagnation and keeps killifish actively engaged with their environment.

Clear glass marbles or smooth river stones scattered on the substrate create a visually interesting floor that killifish investigate.
