Unlike many community fish that thrive on plant-heavy flake foods, killifish require a protein-forward diet to maintain their vivid coloration, reproductive health, and overall vitality.

Because killifish encompass hundreds of species spread across multiple genera, nutritional needs can vary. Annual species that live fast and reproduce quickly tend to need calorie-dense diets that support rapid growth and egg production. Longer-lived non-annual species still benefit from high-protein fare but can tolerate a slightly broader nutritional range. Understanding which group your killifish belongs to is the first step in building a proper feeding plan.

Vitamins and minerals matter as well. Carotenoid pigments found in many live and frozen foods play a direct role in maintaining the brilliant reds, blues, and yellows killifish are known for. A diet that lacks these pigments will produce duller fish over time. Omega fatty acids support immune function and fin integrity, while calcium and trace minerals contribute to bone density and scale health.

It is also worth noting that killifish have relatively small mouths compared to many aquarium fish of similar body length. Food particle size must be appropriate. Crushing or selecting micro-grade versions of prepared foods ensures killifish can eat comfortably without struggling to consume oversized pellets or flakes.

What to Look For

When shopping for killifish food, the ingredient list tells the real story. Look for products where whole fish, fish meal, shrimp meal, or insect larvae appear as the first ingredients. Avoid formulas that lead with wheat flour, soy, or corn-based fillers. These bulk ingredients dilute the protein content and provide little nutritional value for a carnivorous species.

Protein content should be at least 40 percent for staple foods, and ideally higher for foods used during breeding conditioning. Fat content in the range of 6 to 12 percent is appropriate for most killifish species. Products that include added carotenoids, spirulina for color enhancement, or natural astaxanthin are good choices for maintaining vivid pigmentation.

Particle size is a practical consideration many keepers overlook. Killifish feed most comfortably on small granules, micro-pellets, or finely crumbled flakes that float or sink slowly through the water column. Many killifish are surface or mid-water feeders and will ignore food that plummets to the substrate. Slow-sinking micro-granules often work best for species that hover in the middle of the tank.

Shelf stability and freshness also matter. Prepared foods lose nutritional value over time once opened, particularly fat-soluble vitamins. Buy sizes you can use within two to three months and store containers sealed in a cool, dry place. If a food smells rancid or has changed color significantly, discard it.

Recommended Dry Food

High-quality micro-pellets and crushed flake foods serve as the backbone of a captive killifish diet. Micro-pellets formulated for small carnivorous fish deliver concentrated nutrition in a size killifish can handle easily. Look for semi-floating varieties that linger in the upper water column where many killifish species prefer to feed.

Crushed tropical flake foods can work as a supplemental staple, but they are best used in conjunction with more protein-dense options rather than as the sole diet. Standard community flakes tend to be lower in animal protein and higher in plant-based fillers than what killifish truly need. If you use flakes, select those marketed for carnivorous tropical species and crush them to a size your fish can consume in a single bite.

Granular foods designed for small predatory fish often strike the best balance of nutrition and convenience. These products typically pack more protein per gram than flakes, resist crumbling in the water, and produce less waste. The best options include color-enhancing compounds and stabilized vitamin blends.

For keepers maintaining multiple killifish species, having two or three dry foods on rotation adds nutritional variety. Alternating between a high-protein micro-pellet and a carotenoid-enriched granule, for example, covers a broad nutritional spectrum without requiring daily live food preparation.

Wet, Frozen & Live Options

Live foods are the gold standard for killifish nutrition and are virtually indispensable during breeding conditioning. Newly hatched brine shrimp, daphnia, micro-worms, grindal worms, and white worms are all excellent choices. Many serious killifish keepers maintain their own cultures of these organisms to ensure a reliable, pesticide-free supply.

Frozen foods offer a convenient middle ground between live prey and dry prepared foods. Frozen brine shrimp, bloodworms, cyclops, and daphnia retain much of the nutritional profile of their live counterparts and are readily accepted by most killifish species. Thaw small portions in a cup of tank water before feeding to avoid shocking the fish with temperature differences and to allow you to drain any packing liquid.

Freeze-dried options such as tubifex, bloodworms, and brine shrimp provide shelf-stable alternatives but are nutritionally inferior to frozen or live equivalents. The freeze-drying process can strip some vitamins and alter the fat profile. If you use freeze-dried foods, consider them an occasional supplement rather than a dietary mainstay.

For killifish fry, infusoria and vinegar eels serve as essential first foods during the earliest days after hatching. Newly hatched brine shrimp can be introduced once fry are large enough to consume them. Having these cultures ready before eggs hatch is a critical part of successful killifish breeding.

Treats & Supplements

Occasional treats keep killifish engaged and provide nutritional variety. Small live mosquito larvae, when available and sourced from pesticide-free water, are a natural favorite that triggers enthusiastic feeding responses. Wingless fruit flies are another excellent treat for surface-feeding species, closely mimicking the insects killifish encounter in their natural habitats.

Vitamin supplements can be added to food to fill nutritional gaps, particularly in setups that rely heavily on dry prepared diets. Liquid vitamin concentrates designed for aquarium fish can be drizzled over food shortly before feeding. Color-enhancing supplements rich in astaxanthin and spirulina can be offered periodically to intensify pigmentation, especially in show fish or breeding stock. These are most effective when used consistently over several weeks rather than as a one-time addition.

Foods to Avoid

Not all fish foods are suitable for killifish. Large pellets designed for cichlids or goldfish are too big for most killifish mouths and will either be ignored or cause choking hazards. Similarly, wafer-style foods intended for bottom-dwelling catfish or plecos are formulated for herbivorous or omnivorous species and lack the protein density killifish require.

Feeder fish should be avoided entirely. The practice carries significant risk of introducing parasites, bacterial infections, and diseases into your killifish tank. The nutritional value does not justify the health hazards. Tubifex worms collected from the wild also pose contamination risks unless they have been thoroughly cleaned and quarantined, which is impractical for most hobbyists.

Plant-based foods such as spirulina wafers, blanched vegetables, or algae tabs are not appropriate as primary foods for killifish. While tiny amounts of plant matter may be consumed incidentally, killifish digestive systems are optimized for animal protein and derive minimal benefit from vegetable-heavy diets.

Stale or expired food is a common but preventable problem. Prepared foods that have been open for months lose vitamin potency and may develop harmful molds or bacterial growth. Any food that smells off, appears clumped or discolored, or has been stored in a humid environment should be discarded and replaced.

Feeding Schedule

Most adult killifish do well with one to two small feedings per day. Each feeding should consist of only as much food as the fish can consume within two to three minutes. Overfeeding is one of the most common mistakes in killifish keeping, leading to poor water quality, obesity, and increased susceptibility to disease.

For annual killifish species with shorter lifespans, slightly more frequent or generous feedings support their accelerated growth and reproductive cycles. Non-annual species benefit from a more measured approach, with occasional fasting days helping to prevent digestive issues and maintain water quality.

Fry and juvenile killifish require more frequent feedings, typically three to four times daily in small amounts. Young fish are growing rapidly and need constant access to appropriately sized food. As they mature and approach adult size, feeding frequency can gradually be reduced to the standard adult schedule.

Varying the diet throughout the week keeps killifish healthy and responsive to feeding. A sample weekly rotation might include micro-pellets on most days, frozen brine shrimp or bloodworms twice a week, and live food once or twice a week. This rotation ensures a broad nutritional profile and prevents the behavioral flatness that can develop when fish receive the same food every day.

During breeding conditioning, increase the proportion of live and frozen foods in the diet for two to three weeks leading up to the desired spawning period. The higher protein and fat content signals reproductive readiness and typically results in better egg quality and higher spawn counts.
