Tank Size & Space Requirements

Killifish are relatively small fish, but they still need adequate space to establish territories, display natural behaviors, and maintain stable water parameters. A single pair of smaller species such as clown killifish or lampeyes can be housed in a tank as small as five gallons, though ten gallons provides a much more comfortable and stable environment. Larger species or groups of multiple pairs should be given 15 to 20 gallons or more.

Tank footprint matters more than total volume for many killifish species. Because most killifish are surface or mid-water dwellers, a long and shallow tank offers more usable territory than a tall, narrow one. Tanks with generous horizontal dimensions give males room to establish display zones without constant conflict, and they provide more surface area for gas exchange, which benefits water quality.

Overstocking is a common mistake that leads to aggression, stress, and rapid water quality decline. A good rule of thumb is one pair per five gallons of actual water volume for smaller species, with additional space added for each extra pair. In community setups with other species, the killifish population should be adjusted downward to account for the shared bioload.

For breeders maintaining multiple species or large colonies, a rack system of smaller tanks in the five to ten gallon range is often more practical than a single large aquarium. This approach allows each species or breeding pair its own controlled environment, simplifies genetic management, and prevents hybridization between closely related species.

Tank Types & Materials

Standard glass aquariums are the most popular housing choice for killifish and offer excellent visibility, scratch resistance, and long-term durability. Rimmed glass tanks with silicone seals are affordable and available in a wide range of sizes suitable for killifish keeping. Rimless glass tanks provide a more polished aesthetic and are increasingly popular among dedicated hobbyists who display their setups.

Acrylic tanks are lighter and more impact-resistant than glass, which makes them a good choice for rack systems where weight is a concern. However, acrylic scratches more easily and can yellow over time with UV exposure. For breeders running large numbers of tanks, the weight savings and durability against cracking may outweigh the cosmetic downsides.

Plastic storage containers and food-safe tubs are a practical option for breeders who prioritize function over aesthetics. Many killifish breeders use translucent plastic bins for spawning pairs and fry grow-out. These containers are inexpensive, stackable, and easy to replace. The main drawback is reduced visibility, but for breeding operations where observation occurs during specific maintenance windows, this is rarely a problem.

Regardless of material, every killifish tank must have a secure lid. Killifish are notorious jumpers, and even species that seem calm in normal conditions will leap from open-top tanks, especially during feeding, territorial displays, or sudden environmental changes. A tight-fitting lid with no gaps larger than a few millimeters is essential.

Substrate & Aquascaping

Substrate choice depends largely on the killifish species being kept and whether breeding is a goal. Bottom-spawning killifish that bury their eggs in the substrate require a layer of peat moss, coconut fiber, or fine-grained soil-type substrate that allows them to dive and deposit eggs. A depth of one to two inches of these materials gives spawning pairs adequate room to complete their breeding behavior.

For non-annual species that spawn on plants or mops, substrate is less critical from a reproductive standpoint. Fine gravel, sand, or bare-bottom setups all work. Sand is visually appealing and easy to clean, while bare-bottom tanks simplify maintenance in breeding and fry-rearing setups where siphoning waste is a daily task.

Live plants are highly beneficial in killifish tanks. Floating plants such as water lettuce, frogbit, and salvinia provide shade, reduce light intensity, and give surface-dwelling species a sense of security. Submerged plants like java moss, java fern, and anubias offer hiding spots, serve as spawning sites for plant-spawning species, and help absorb excess nitrates.

Driftwood and leaf litter are valuable additions that mimic the natural habitats of many killifish species. Indian almond leaves and oak leaves release tannins that slightly acidify the water and provide antimicrobial properties. They also develop biofilm that serves as a supplementary food source for fry. Replace leaves as they decompose, typically every two to four weeks.

Filtration & Water Flow

Killifish generally inhabit slow-moving or still waters in nature, so aggressive filtration that creates strong currents is counterproductive. Sponge filters are the most widely recommended filtration option for killifish tanks. They provide gentle biological filtration, create minimal water movement, and are completely safe for fry. An air pump driving a sponge filter is the standard setup in most dedicated killifish rooms.

Hang-on-back filters can be used for larger killifish tanks but should be fitted with a pre-filter sponge over the intake to prevent small fish and fry from being pulled in. The outflow should be baffled or directed against the glass to diffuse the current. Adjustable-flow models that can be turned down to their lowest setting work best.

Canister filters are generally more filtration than killifish tanks require and tend to produce too much flow for small setups. If used on larger community tanks that include killifish, spray bars and flow diffusers are necessary to distribute the output evenly and prevent concentrated currents.

In breeding and fry tanks, minimal filtration is preferred. A small sponge filter on a gentle air supply is sufficient. Some breeders in warm climates forego filtration entirely in small containers, relying instead on daily water changes and live plants to maintain water quality. This approach demands disciplined maintenance but avoids any risk of mechanical harm to eggs or fry.

Lighting & Temperature Control

Most killifish do not require intense lighting and in fact prefer subdued conditions. Many species originate from shaded forest streams, temporary pools beneath tree canopies, or murky swamp environments where direct sunlight is limited. A low to moderate output LED light on a timer providing eight to ten hours of illumination per day is sufficient for most setups.

If live plants are part of the aquascape, lighting should be selected to support plant growth without being so intense that it stresses the fish. Full-spectrum LEDs in the moderate output range are ideal, supporting healthy plant development while keeping light levels within the comfort zone of most killifish species. Floating plants help diffuse light from above and create dappled conditions that killifish find comfortable.

Temperature control is critical because killifish species span a wide range of thermal preferences. Tropical species typically thrive between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while some temperate and subtropical species prefer cooler conditions in the 64 to 74 degree range. A reliable submersible heater with an accurate thermostat is essential for tropical species kept in rooms that fall below their preferred range.

For keepers maintaining species that require cooler temperatures, heating may be unnecessary if ambient room temperature stays within range. In warm climates or during summer months, cooling can become the challenge. Small aquarium fans that promote evaporative cooling, or placing tanks in air-conditioned rooms, helps prevent overheating. Monitoring temperature with a reliable thermometer is a non-negotiable part of killifish husbandry regardless of species.

Multi-Species & Community Setups

Killifish can be kept in community tanks under the right conditions, but tankmate selection requires careful consideration. Ideal companions are small, peaceful species that occupy different areas of the water column. Small tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, and otocinclus are commonly successful choices. Avoid housing killifish with aggressive or fin-nipping species, fast-moving feeders that will outcompete them for food, or significantly larger fish that may view them as prey.

Keeping multiple killifish species together is possible but carries the risk of hybridization between closely related species. Breeders maintaining pure genetic lines should house each species separately. For display purposes, combining species from different genera that are unlikely to interbreed can create visually stunning tanks without genetic concerns.

Male killifish of the same species can be territorial, especially in confined spaces. In a community killifish tank, maintaining a ratio of one male to two or three females per species reduces aggression and spreads male attention across multiple individuals. Providing ample visual barriers through plants, driftwood, and decor helps break up sight lines and allows subordinate fish to escape persistent harassment.

When adding killifish to an established community tank, acclimation should be slow and deliberate. Drip acclimation over 30 to 60 minutes allows the fish to adjust to differences in water chemistry and temperature. Introduce killifish with the lights off and during the late afternoon or evening to reduce initial stress and allow them to settle in before the resident fish become active the next morning.
