Dojo Loaches require significantly more space than their slim profile might suggest. While juveniles under four inches can temporarily inhabit a twenty-gallon tank, adults routinely reach eight to twelve inches in length and need a minimum of forty gallons for a single specimen. For a group of three — which is the recommended minimum for this highly social species — a fifty-five to seventy-five gallon tank is far more appropriate and allows each loach sufficient territory to establish comfortable resting spots without crowding.

Tank footprint matters more than total volume for bottom-dwelling species like Dojo Loaches. A long, shallow tank with maximum floor space is preferable to a tall, narrow design that offers vertical swimming room the loach will rarely use. Standard rectangular aquariums in the forty-eight-inch-long format provide an excellent balance of floor area and water volume. Breeder-style tanks, which are wider than standard models at the same length, are an even better choice because they maximize the substrate surface area where loaches spend nearly all their time.

One of the most critical and frequently overlooked housing requirements for Dojo Loaches is a secure lid. These fish are notorious escape artists — they can and will climb silicone seams, squeeze through surprisingly small gaps around filter intakes and heater cords, and launch themselves out of uncovered tanks, especially during barometric pressure changes or when startled. Every opening in the tank lid must be sealed or covered with mesh, foam, or a custom-cut panel. Even the smallest gap around equipment cutouts can become an escape route for a determined loach.

When planning tank placement, consider that Dojo Loaches are sensitive to vibration and sudden noise. Placing the aquarium on a sturdy, level stand away from high-traffic areas, speaker systems, and slamming doors reduces stress behavior and encourages the loach to remain visible rather than hiding constantly. A quality aquarium stand rated for the full weight of the filled tank — water weighs roughly eight and a half pounds per gallon — is a non-negotiable investment.

Substrate & Aquascaping

Substrate selection is arguably the single most important housing decision for Dojo Loaches, because these fish interact with the bottom of the tank more intimately than almost any other commonly kept species. They burrow, sift, dig, and sometimes submerge themselves entirely with only their barbels protruding above the surface. Fine sand in the one-to-two-millimeter grain size range is the gold standard substrate for loach tanks. It allows natural burrowing behavior, does not trap debris the way gravel does, and — critically — will not damage the loach's sensitive barbels.

Coarse gravel and sharp-edged substrates should be avoided entirely. Dojo Loaches constantly press their barbels and ventral surface against the substrate while foraging, and rough materials cause abrasions that can lead to bacterial infections. If gravel is already in the tank, a layer of fine sand at least two inches deep can be placed over it, though a full substrate swap is the better long-term solution. Bare-bottom tanks are functional but deprive the loach of its most fundamental behavioral need — digging.

Aquascaping for Dojo Loaches should prioritize ground-level shelter and open sifting areas in roughly equal measure. Driftwood, smooth river rocks, and clay pipes positioned directly on the tank bottom create the caves and overhangs that loaches use as daytime resting spots. Avoid stacking heavy rocks on top of sand without supporting them on the tank glass underneath, because burrowing loaches can undermine stone structures and cause dangerous collapses. A simple precaution is to place large rocks directly on the glass bottom before adding the sand layer.

Live plants are compatible with Dojo Loaches but require some forethought. Rooted plants may be uprooted by digging activity, so species that attach to hardscape — such as java fern, anubias, and mosses tied to driftwood or stone — tend to fare better than stem plants pushed into the substrate. Floating plants are also an excellent addition, as they dim the lighting and provide the subdued environment that loaches prefer.

Filtration & Water Flow

Filtration capacity is a high priority in any Dojo Loach tank because these fish are both messy eaters and prolific waste producers relative to their body mass. A filter rated for at least one and a half times the tank's volume in gallons-per-hour turnover is a reasonable starting point. Canister filters are the preferred choice for most serious loach keepers, as they provide high flow rates, large media capacity, and flexible intake and output positioning that can be adjusted to suit the tank layout.

Hang-on-back filters work adequately for smaller setups but present a specific risk for Dojo Loaches: the intake tube. Loaches have been known to wedge themselves into filter intakes, especially during periods of heightened activity associated with weather changes. A sponge pre-filter cover on any intake tube is an essential safeguard that prevents entrapment while also providing additional biological filtration surface area. Internal power filters carry the same risk and should be similarly protected.

Sponge filters are an underrated option for Dojo Loach tanks, particularly as supplemental filtration. They are mechanically simple, provide excellent biological filtration through their large surface area, and pose zero entrapment risk. In tanks with sand substrate, a sponge filter positioned in a rear corner provides gentle water circulation without disturbing the substrate or creating dead spots where waste accumulates.

Water flow preferences for Dojo Loaches fall in the moderate range. They originate from slow-to-moderate-flow rivers and streams in East Asia, so excessively strong current from powerheads or wavemakers is unnecessary and can stress the fish. However, some directional flow is appreciated and encourages natural behavior. Positioning the filter output to create a gentle current along the length of the tank, with quieter zones behind hardscape where the loach can rest out of the flow, replicates their natural habitat effectively.

Lighting & Temperature

Dojo Loaches are not demanding when it comes to lighting, and in fact prefer subdued conditions over bright illumination. In their natural habitat, they occupy shaded stream beds under overhanging vegetation and submerged root systems where direct sunlight rarely penetrates. An aquarium light on a timer set to eight to ten hours of moderate-intensity illumination is sufficient for maintaining plant growth without overstressing the loach. Dimmer controls or adjustable-spectrum LED fixtures allow fine-tuning the light level to suit both the fish and any live plants in the tank.

Floating plants and tall background plants serve a dual purpose by diffusing overhead light and creating shaded zones at the substrate level. Dojo Loaches kept under consistently bright lighting tend to remain hidden for longer periods and display paler coloration compared to those in well-shaded setups. If the tank lacks live plants to filter the light, a dark or tinted background panel on the rear glass can reduce perceived brightness from the loach's perspective.

Temperature management is where Dojo Loach housing diverges significantly from typical tropical fish setups. These are coldwater to subtropical fish that thrive in a range of sixty to seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit, with a sweet spot around sixty-five to seventy-two degrees. Many keepers in temperate climates find that Dojo Loaches do not require a heater at all if the room temperature remains stable within this range. In warmer climates or during summer months, keeping the tank cool enough can actually be the greater challenge.

If a heater is used, it should be set to the lower end of the acceptable range and protected with a heater guard. Dojo Loaches sometimes rest against or wrap around submersible heaters, which can cause thermal burns on their scaleless skin. Inline heaters installed in the canister filter return line eliminate this risk entirely by heating the water outside the tank. For tanks that run too warm, strategies like increasing surface agitation, using a clip-on fan directed across the water surface, or running the lights during cooler nighttime hours can bring temperatures down by several degrees.

Water Parameters

Dojo Loaches are widely regarded as hardy and tolerant of a broad range of water conditions, which is one reason they have remained popular in the aquarium hobby for well over a century. However, this hardiness should not be mistaken for indifference — they still perform best when water parameters are kept stable within their preferred ranges. A pH between six-point-five and eight is acceptable, with neutral to slightly alkaline conditions around seven to seven-point-five being optimal for long-term health.

Water hardness is flexible for this species. They tolerate both soft and moderately hard water, with a general hardness range of five to fifteen dGH suiting them well. Extremely soft water below three dGH can sometimes contribute to slime coat issues, while very hard water above twenty dGH is outside their natural range. Most municipal tap water, once properly dechlorinated, falls within an acceptable range without the need for additional mineral supplementation or reverse osmosis treatment.

Ammonia and nitrite must be maintained at zero — this is non-negotiable for any fish species, but Dojo Loaches are particularly vulnerable to ammonia burns because they lack the protective scales that offer other fish a partial barrier against dissolved toxins. Nitrate should be kept below forty parts per million through regular water changes, with twenty ppm or lower being the target for optimal health. Weekly water changes of twenty-five to thirty percent are the standard maintenance interval, though tanks with heavier bioloads may require more frequent changes.

Chlorine and chloramine in tap water must be neutralized with a quality water conditioner before any water enters the tank. Dojo Loaches are also notably sensitive to dissolved medications, particularly copper-based treatments and many common ich remedies. Any disease treatment in a loach tank should be researched carefully, and half-dose protocols are often recommended by experienced keepers when conventional fish medications must be used.

Tankmates & Community Setup

Dojo Loaches are among the most peaceful and community-compatible fish in the hobby, which makes tankmate selection relatively straightforward compared to more territorial or aggressive species. Their calm demeanor, bottom-dwelling habits, and general disinterest in other fish mean they coexist peacefully with the vast majority of similarly tempered species. The primary consideration is temperature compatibility — because Dojo Loaches prefer cooler water than most tropical fish, ideal tankmates are other coldwater or subtropical species that thrive in the sixty-to-seventy-five-degree range.

White cloud mountain minnows, rosy barbs, variatus platies, and other coolwater community fish make excellent companions. Goldfish are a commonly suggested tankmate, and while the temperature overlap is genuine, there are practical concerns: goldfish produce enormous amounts of waste relative to their size, and large fancy goldfish can sometimes outcompete loaches for sinking food. If goldfish and Dojo Loaches are kept together, the tank must be significantly oversized and filtration must be robust enough to handle the combined bioload.

Other loach species — particularly kuhli loaches, hillstream loaches, and other peaceful bottom-dwellers — make natural companions that share similar habitat preferences. Multiple Dojo Loaches should be kept together whenever possible, as they are genuinely social fish that exhibit more natural behavior, spend more time in the open, and display reduced stress responses when kept in groups of three or more. Solitary Dojo Loaches often become reclusive and may develop repetitive stress behaviors like glass surfing.

Fish to avoid housing with Dojo Loaches include aggressive cichlids, large predatory species that might view a resting loach as prey, and fin-nipping species like tiger barbs that can harass the loach's elongated body. Very small fish such as neon tetras and micro rasboras can technically coexist, but there is an occasional risk that a large adult Dojo Loach may consume tiny tankmates, particularly fry or very small juveniles. Invertebrates like snails are generally safe, though small shrimp species may be at some risk from a curious loach sifting through the substrate.
