Beyond the filter unit itself, the media loaded inside it determines how effectively the system processes waste in a Dojo Loach tank. Biological media — ceramic rings, sintered glass, and bio-balls — provide the porous surface area that beneficial bacteria colonize to convert ammonia into nitrite and then into less harmful nitrate. For loach tanks, maximizing biological media capacity is the top priority because these fish produce a disproportionate amount of waste relative to their surface-area-to-body-mass ratio, and their scaleless skin makes them especially vulnerable to ammonia spikes.
Mechanical filtration media should be selected with sand substrate in mind. Fine filter floss and polishing pads catch the tiny sand particles that inevitably get stirred into the water column by burrowing loaches. Without adequate mechanical filtration, this suspended sand can scratch impeller housings and reduce filter lifespan. A coarse-to-fine media stack — starting with a sponge or coarse pad and ending with fine floss — protects the impeller while maintaining strong flow rates between maintenance intervals.
Chemical filtration media like activated carbon is useful in specific situations but should not be run continuously in a loach tank. Carbon removes dissolved organic compounds, discoloration, and odors effectively, but it also strips beneficial tannins released by driftwood and Indian almond leaves — substances that many loach keepers intentionally introduce for their antibacterial and stress-reducing properties. Running carbon for a few days after a medication course to remove residual chemicals, then removing it, is a more strategic approach than permanent installation.
Sponge pre-filter covers for filter intakes are arguably the single most important filtration accessory in a Dojo Loach tank. These inexpensive foam sleeves prevent the loach from being drawn against or into the intake tube, a genuine safety hazard given the loach's tendency to investigate tight spaces. Pre-filter sponges also provide additional biological filtration surface and trap large debris before it enters the main filter, extending the interval between media cleanings.
