Multiple Dojo Loaches housed together display more relaxed, confident behavior than solitary individuals, and a group of three to five is the recommended social arrangement. Group members engage in communal resting, synchronized foraging, and occasional playful chasing that creates an engaging social dynamic. Mixed-color groups combining wild-type and gold morphs are particularly attractive and behave identically regardless of color variation.

Breeding Dojo Loaches in home aquariums is uncommon but has been achieved under specific conditions. The species likely requires seasonal temperature cycling to trigger reproductive behavior, with a cool winter period followed by a gradual spring warming combined with increased feeding and simulated rainfall through large, slightly cooler water changes. In the wild, spawning occurs in spring when temperatures rise and water levels increase during the monsoon season, and replicating these environmental cues appears necessary for captive reproduction.

When spawning does occur, the male wraps his body around the female in a nuptial embrace, and the female releases adhesive eggs that scatter among plants and on the substrate. Fecundity is high, with several hundred to over a thousand eggs possible from a productive female. The eggs hatch in approximately two to three days at warm temperatures, producing tiny larvae that require microscopic live foods such as infusoria and freshly hatched brine shrimp for their initial feedings. Adults will consume eggs and larvae if not separated, so a dedicated breeding and rearing tank is advisable. The difficulty of triggering spawning and the challenges of larval rearing mean that most commercially available Dojo Loaches originate from Asian breeding operations that employ hormonal induction or large outdoor pond setups that naturally provide the seasonal triggers required.
