Tank Size & Space Requirements

A single adult axolotl requires a minimum of 20 gallons, though a 30- to 40-gallon tank is strongly recommended for long-term housing. Axolotls are bottom dwellers that spend the majority of their time walking along the substrate, so floor space matters far more than water depth. A long, shallow tank with a large footprint is always preferable to a tall, narrow aquarium of the same volume.

For each additional axolotl, add at least 10 gallons of tank capacity. Overcrowding leads to territorial stress, nipped gills, and rapidly deteriorating water quality. Even docile animals can become aggressive in cramped quarters, and axolotls housed too closely together may injure one another during feeding when they mistake a tankmate's limb for food.

Water depth should be sufficient to fully submerge the animal with several inches of clearance above its back, but extreme depth is unnecessary and can make maintenance more difficult. Most keepers find that 12 to 18 inches of water depth strikes the right balance between swimming room and ease of access for cleaning and feeding.

Glass aquariums are the standard choice for axolotl housing. They are widely available, affordable in common sizes, and provide excellent visibility. Acrylic tanks are lighter and more impact-resistant but scratch easily and can bow under the pressure of larger water volumes. Whichever material you choose, ensure the tank sits on a level, sturdy surface rated for the filled weight — a 40-gallon tank weighs well over 300 pounds when full.

Substrate & Tank Floor

Substrate selection is one of the most debated topics in axolotl care, and the stakes are real. Axolotls feed by creating a vacuum with their mouths, and they inevitably ingest substrate material along with their food. Gravel is the single most dangerous substrate option because individual stones can cause fatal intestinal impaction. This risk applies to any loose particulate larger than a grain of sand and smaller than a marble.

Fine sand is the most popular substrate among experienced keepers. Grains small enough to pass safely through the digestive tract pose minimal impaction risk, and sand provides a natural surface that gives axolotls traction as they walk. Play sand and pool filter sand are both commonly used, though they should be rinsed thoroughly before adding them to the tank to remove dust and fine particles that cloud the water.

A bare-bottom tank is the safest option from a health standpoint and the easiest to maintain. Without substrate, uneaten food and waste are immediately visible and can be removed with a turkey baster or siphon. The drawback is that axolotls may struggle to grip a smooth glass or acrylic floor, which can cause stress and reduce their willingness to explore the tank. Some keepers compromise by placing slate tiles or textured ceramic tiles on the bottom, providing traction without impaction risk.

Large, smooth river rocks that are too big to fit in the axolotl's mouth can also serve as a substrate alternative. These should be substantially larger than the animal's head to eliminate any swallowing risk. Avoid rough or jagged stones that could abrade the axolotl's delicate skin, and be aware that debris can accumulate between rocks, requiring periodic removal and cleaning.

Filtration & Water Flow

Filtration is essential for maintaining water quality, but axolotls require a gentler approach than most aquarium fish. Strong currents stress axolotls, damage their delicate external gills, and can push them around the tank involuntarily. The ideal filter provides adequate biological and mechanical filtration while producing minimal water movement at the tank floor where the animal lives.

Sponge filters are the most frequently recommended filtration option for axolotl tanks. They provide excellent biological filtration through beneficial bacteria colonies that colonize the sponge surface, produce very gentle water movement, and pose no risk of trapping the animal. An air pump drives the sponge filter, and the flow rate can be adjusted by controlling the air valve. For tanks over 30 gallons, two sponge filters placed at opposite ends of the tank distribute filtration evenly.

Hang-on-back filters and canister filters can also work for axolotl tanks, but their output must be diffused or baffled to reduce current strength. A simple spray bar attachment, a piece of filter sponge secured over the outflow, or directing the output against the tank wall are all effective strategies. Canister filters offer superior mechanical filtration and larger media capacity, making them a strong choice for heavily stocked tanks or keepers who want longer intervals between maintenance.

Regardless of the filter type, biological filtration capacity must be fully established before introducing an axolotl. Cycling a new tank — the process of building up beneficial bacteria that convert toxic ammonia to nitrite and then to less harmful nitrate — typically takes four to six weeks. Rushing this step is one of the most common causes of axolotl illness and death in new setups. Test water parameters regularly during the cycling period and do not add the animal until ammonia and nitrite consistently read zero.

Hides, Plants & Décor

Axolotls are naturally reclusive and spend a significant portion of their day tucked inside sheltered spaces. Providing at least two hides per animal — one at each end of the tank — gives the axolotl options and reduces stress. Hides can be purpose-built aquarium caves, overturned terracotta pots with an entrance cut or filed into the rim, PVC pipe sections, or ceramic ornaments with smooth edges and openings large enough for the animal to enter and exit freely.

Live plants are beneficial in axolotl tanks because they absorb nitrates, oxygenate the water, and provide additional cover. Java fern, anubias, and marimo moss balls are popular choices because they tolerate the cool water temperatures axolotls require and do not need intense lighting. Avoid planting directly in sand substrate if possible — attaching plants to driftwood or stones with fishing line or aquarium-safe glue keeps roots intact when the axolotl inevitably disrupts the substrate.

Silk or soft plastic artificial plants are acceptable alternatives for keepers who do not want to maintain live vegetation. Hard plastic plants with sharp edges should be avoided entirely, as they can tear the axolotl's skin and gill filaments. Run your hand along any artificial décor before placing it in the tank — if it feels rough or catches on your skin, it will injure the animal.

Driftwood can serve as both a visual element and a functional surface for plant attachment, but it releases tannins that lower pH and tint the water brown. While slightly acidic, tannin-rich water is not inherently harmful, it can make monitoring water clarity more difficult and may shift pH below the preferred range of 6.5 to 8.0. Soaking driftwood in a separate container for several weeks before adding it to the tank reduces tannin leaching significantly.

Temperature & Cooling

Temperature control is arguably the single most important environmental factor in axolotl housing. These animals are native to cold, high-altitude lake systems and thrive in water between 60 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Sustained temperatures above 72 °F suppress the immune system, accelerate harmful bacterial growth, and can be fatal. Heat stress is one of the leading causes of illness in captive axolotls, particularly during summer months in warm climates.

In most homes, maintaining cool water temperatures requires active cooling rather than heating. Aquarium chillers are the most reliable solution — they function like small air conditioners for the tank and maintain a precise setpoint regardless of ambient room temperature. Chillers represent a significant upfront investment, but for keepers in warm climates or homes without air conditioning, they are essentially mandatory equipment.

Clip-on aquarium fans offer a less expensive alternative that can lower water temperature by two to four degrees through evaporative cooling. They are effective in moderately warm conditions but cannot overcome extreme heat. Fans also increase the evaporation rate, which means more frequent top-offs with dechlorinated water and a greater chance of mineral concentration shifts.

DIY cooling methods such as frozen water bottles floated in the tank are sometimes suggested as stopgap measures, but they are unreliable and create rapid temperature swings that stress the animal. If you must use ice as an emergency measure, place the sealed bottle in the tank and monitor the thermometer closely. A gradual change of one to two degrees over an hour is far safer than a sudden five-degree drop. Long-term, invest in a proper cooling system rather than relying on daily intervention.

Multi-Axolotl & Tankmate Considerations

Axolotls can be housed together, but cohabitation introduces risks that solitary housing avoids entirely. The most common injury in multi-axolotl tanks is gill nipping — one animal biting the external gills of another, usually during feeding. Axolotls can regenerate damaged gills, but repeated injuries create chronic stress and open wounds vulnerable to fungal and bacterial infection.

If you choose to house multiple axolotls together, ensure the tank is spacious enough to provide each animal with its own territory. A 40-gallon tank is a reasonable minimum for two adults, with 10 to 20 additional gallons per animal beyond that. Provide separate hides at opposite ends of the tank so each axolotl has a retreat, and feed animals individually using tongs or pipettes to reduce competition and accidental biting.

Size matching is critical in communal setups. An axolotl that is significantly larger than its tankmate will almost certainly attempt to eat it. Juveniles should never be housed with adults, and even among juveniles, animals of similar body length should be grouped together. Any axolotl showing persistent aggression — repeated biting, chasing, or monopolizing hides — should be separated immediately.

Fish and other aquatic species are generally poor tankmates for axolotls. Small fish will be eaten. Larger or faster fish may nip at the axolotl's gills. Snails are sometimes tolerated, but any snail small enough to be swallowed poses an impaction risk. The safest and most stress-free approach is a species-only tank, and most experienced keepers ultimately arrive at this conclusion after experimenting with mixed setups.
