A reliable water testing kit is the single most important accessory for any axolotl keeper. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH must be monitored regularly to ensure the tank environment remains safe. Liquid reagent test kits are strongly preferred over paper test strips because they deliver significantly more accurate and consistent readings. Strips are convenient but prone to false positives, user interpretation errors, and degradation from humidity exposure.

Ammonia and nitrite should always read zero in a properly cycled tank. Any detectable level of either compound indicates a biological filtration failure that requires immediate attention — partial water changes, reduced feeding, and investigation of the filter system. Nitrate is less acutely toxic but should be kept below 20 parts per million through regular water changes. Axolotls are more sensitive to nitrogen compounds than many tropical fish species, so the thresholds commonly cited in general fishkeeping guides may be too lenient.

pH for axolotls should fall between 6.5 and 8.0, with 7.0 to 7.5 being the ideal range. Most municipal tap water falls within this window after dechlorination, but well water and water treated with softeners can drift outside acceptable bounds. Test pH weekly under stable conditions and more frequently after any change to the tank — new substrate, driftwood, or chemical treatments can all shift pH.

Keep a dedicated log of your test results with dates. Tracking trends over time is far more informative than individual snapshots. A gradual rise in nitrate over three weeks tells you that your water change schedule needs adjustment, while a sudden ammonia spike after months of zeros points to a specific event — overfeeding, a dead organism in the tank, or a filter malfunction. The testing kit is only useful if you use it consistently and record what it tells you.

Water Conditioners & Treatment Products

Dechlorinator is non-negotiable. Municipal tap water contains chlorine or chloramine, both of which are lethal to axolotls even in small concentrations. Every drop of water that enters the tank — whether during a water change, a top-off, or an emergency move — must be treated with a water conditioner that neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine. Not all conditioners address chloramine, so check the label specifically.

Beyond basic dechlorination, some water conditioners include additives that bind heavy metals, detoxify ammonia temporarily, or promote the protective slime coat on aquatic animals. These extras can be helpful in emergency situations — for example, a conditioner that binds ammonia can buy time during a filter failure — but they should never be relied upon as substitutes for proper biological filtration and regular water changes.

Avoid pH-adjusting chemicals, algaecides, and broad-spectrum water treatments unless you have a specific, diagnosed problem and understand the product's mechanism of action. Many of these chemicals are tested primarily on tropical fish and may have unpredictable effects on amphibians with permeable skin. Axolotls absorb dissolved substances through their skin and gills far more readily than scaled fish, which means they are exposed to higher effective doses of any chemical added to their water.

If your tap water has extreme parameters — very high hardness, very low pH, or measurable copper — a dedicated filtration system such as a reverse osmosis unit may be worth the investment. RO water must be remineralized before use because pure RO water lacks the minerals axolotls need, but it gives you a clean baseline from which to build ideal water chemistry using controlled additives.

Cleaning & Maintenance Tools

A gravel vacuum or siphon hose is the primary tool for routine tank maintenance. During weekly water changes, the siphon is used to simultaneously remove old water and extract waste, uneaten food, and debris from the substrate surface. For sand substrates, hold the siphon slightly above the sand to avoid sucking up large quantities of substrate — the goal is to lift the waste while leaving the sand in place.

A turkey baster is an indispensable spot-cleaning tool that every axolotl keeper should have on hand. It allows you to remove individual pieces of uneaten food, waste, or debris without disturbing the rest of the tank. Daily spot cleaning with a turkey baster between weekly water changes significantly reduces the organic load in the tank and helps maintain stable water chemistry.

Algae scrapers and magnetic glass cleaners keep tank walls clear for observation. Soft-pad magnetic cleaners are ideal for glass tanks — avoid scrapers with metal blades near acrylic tanks, as they will leave permanent scratches. Some algae growth on the back and side walls is harmless and even beneficial, as it provides a surface for biofilm that contributes to the tank's biological filtration capacity. Many keepers choose to clean only the front viewing pane and leave the other walls undisturbed.

Dedicate a set of buckets, sponges, and towels exclusively to aquarium use. Cleaning supplies used elsewhere in the home may carry residues of soap, bleach, or chemical cleaners that are toxic to axolotls. Label your aquarium supplies clearly to prevent cross-contamination, and never wash them with detergent. A rinse with hot water is sufficient for routine cleaning of aquarium-only equipment.

Lighting & Tank Covers

Axolotls do not require specialized lighting and in fact prefer dim conditions. Bright overhead lights stress axolotls, cause them to hide continuously, and can promote excessive algae growth. If you want to illuminate the tank for viewing purposes, choose a low-intensity LED light with adjustable brightness. Cool white or blue-tinted LEDs at their lowest setting provide enough visibility to observe the animal without causing discomfort.

A timer is essential for any lighting system. Axolotls benefit from a consistent day-night cycle of approximately 12 hours light and 12 hours dark, adjusted seasonally if desired. Manual switching leads to irregular cycles that can disrupt the animal's circadian rhythm and feeding patterns. Inexpensive outlet timers solve this problem completely and eliminate the need to remember daily light management.

A secure tank lid or cover is critically important for axolotl housing. While axolotls are fully aquatic and do not voluntarily leave the water under normal conditions, startled or stressed animals can launch themselves out of an open-top tank with surprising force. A tank without a cover also accumulates dust, airborne contaminants, and household aerosols — cooking sprays, air fresheners, cleaning product fumes — that dissolve into the water and can harm the animal.

Glass lids, mesh screen covers, and custom-cut acrylic panels are all suitable options. Glass lids reduce evaporation and maintain stable humidity above the water surface, but they also trap heat, which can be counterproductive if cooling is already a challenge. Mesh screens allow maximum airflow and heat dissipation but increase evaporation. Choose based on your specific environmental conditions and whether temperature management or evaporation is the greater concern in your setup.

Feeding Tools & Food Storage

Long-handled feeding tongs or forceps are the most useful feeding accessory for axolotl keepers. They allow you to deliver food directly to the animal's feeding zone near the substrate without submerging your hand, which disturbs the water and can startle the animal. Choose tongs with smooth, rounded tips — stainless steel tongs with serrated grips can injure the axolotl's mouth if it strikes at the tongs rather than the food.

A dedicated feeding dish — a small, shallow ceramic or glass dish placed on the substrate — can contain pellet feeding to one area of the tank. This concentrates uneaten food in a single location for easy removal and prevents pellets from scattering across the substrate where they decompose unseen. Feeding dishes are particularly useful in sand-substrate tanks where pellets can partially bury themselves and become difficult to locate.

Pipettes and turkey basters serve double duty as both feeding and cleaning tools. A large pipette can deliver thawed bloodworms or brine shrimp directly to a juvenile axolotl with precision, and the same tool removes uneaten food moments later. Keep several sizes on hand — a small-bore pipette for targeted feeding of tiny juveniles and a large-bore baster for bulk food delivery and waste removal.

Proper food storage extends the nutritional value and shelf life of prepared foods. Pellets should be stored in airtight containers in a cool, dry location. Frozen foods like bloodworm cubes and brine shrimp should remain in the freezer until use, thawed in small quantities in a cup of tank water, and never refrozen once thawed. Earthworms can be kept alive in a container of damp soil or peat moss in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, which is far more convenient than purchasing small quantities before each feeding.

Emergency & Quarantine Supplies

Every axolotl keeper should maintain a basic emergency kit that is ready to deploy at a moment's notice. The core components are a secondary container large enough to house the axolotl temporarily, an air pump with a sponge filter, water conditioner, and a bottle of pure ammonia for emergency cycling if the main tank's biological filtration crashes. Having these supplies on hand before an emergency occurs is the difference between a manageable situation and a crisis.

A quarantine tub — often called a hospital tub — is a simple, bare-bottomed plastic container used to isolate a sick or injured axolotl for observation and treatment. It does not need substrate, plants, or decorations. A single hide and an air stone provide basic comfort and oxygenation. The tub should be large enough for the axolotl to move freely, typically ten to fifteen gallons for an adult. Daily full water changes in the quarantine tub are standard practice during treatment, as there is no established biological filter.

Indian almond leaves and unscented, pure sea salt are two common items kept in the emergency kit for their mild antifungal properties. Indian almond leaves release tannins that can help prevent secondary fungal infections on minor wounds. Salt baths — conducted in a separate container at a precise concentration — are sometimes used to treat early-stage fungal issues on the skin or gills. Never add salt directly to the main tank, as axolotls are freshwater animals that cannot tolerate sustained salinity.

A battery-powered air pump is a wise investment for keepers in areas prone to power outages. Without power, the filter stops running and oxygen exchange at the water surface drops. A battery air pump connected to a sponge filter can maintain minimal aeration and biological filtration for several hours — long enough to ride out most short-term outages. In extended outages, manual water changes with conditioned, temperature-matched water become necessary to prevent ammonia buildup in the stagnant tank.
