Unlike many aquarium fish that can subsist on flake food, axolotls need whole prey items or specially formulated sinking pellets that deliver complete nutrition. Their bodies are designed to process animal proteins and fats, and a diet lacking in these macronutrients will lead to stunted growth, weakened immune function, and poor gill development.

Calcium and vitamin D are particularly important for axolotls because their skeletal structure remains largely cartilaginous throughout life. A calcium deficiency can cause fluid retention, limb deformities, and difficulty regenerating tissue — one of the axolotl's most remarkable biological traits. Whole prey items like earthworms naturally deliver a balanced mineral profile, but pellet-fed axolotls may need occasional supplementation to fill nutritional gaps.

Juvenile axolotls have significantly different caloric requirements than adults. Young animals under six inches are growing rapidly and should be fed daily, while adults over nine inches can be fed every two to three days without issue. Overfeeding is one of the most common mistakes new keepers make, and it contributes to obesity, fatty liver disease, and dangerously poor water quality in enclosed aquariums.

Because axolotls are bottom dwellers that locate food primarily through scent and subtle water movement, the physical form of their food matters. Floating foods are largely ignored or cause the animal to gulp air at the surface, which leads to buoyancy problems. Any pellet or prepared food should sink quickly and hold together long enough for the axolotl to find and consume it before it fouls the water.

What to Look For

When evaluating commercial foods for axolotls, the ingredient list should start with a named animal protein such as fish meal, shrimp meal, or earthworm meal. Avoid products that lead with grain fillers, soy protein, or plant-based binders, as axolotls derive almost no nutritional value from plant matter and these ingredients pass through largely undigested. A crude protein content of at least 40 percent is a reasonable benchmark for a quality axolotl pellet.

Pellet size is a practical concern that many keepers overlook. Axolotls swallow food whole — they do not chew — so pellets must be small enough to be ingested safely but large enough to be detected on the substrate. For juveniles, pellets in the one- to two-millimeter range are appropriate. Adults can handle pellets up to six millimeters, though oversized pellets may be regurgitated or cause temporary impaction.

Sinking speed and structural integrity are equally important. A pellet that disintegrates on contact with water creates a cloud of particulate waste that spikes ammonia levels and clogs filters. The best formulations hold their shape for several minutes, giving a slow-moving axolotl time to locate and consume the food. Test a small quantity before committing to a large bag — if the pellets turn to mush within thirty seconds, they are not suitable.

Watch for artificial dyes and unnecessary preservatives. Axolotls have permeable skin and sensitive gill tissue, and prolonged exposure to synthetic colorants in the water column offers no benefit to the animal. Natural preservatives like tocopherols (vitamin E) are preferable to chemical alternatives. Transparent packaging or products with clear lot dates also help ensure freshness, since stale pellets lose nutritional value rapidly.

Recommended Sinking Pellets

Sinking pellets designed for carnivorous aquatic species are the most practical staple food for axolotls kept in home aquariums. These pellets deliver a nutritionally complete profile in a convenient format that minimizes waste and simplifies portion control. Look for formulations specifically marketed toward salamanders or bottom-feeding carnivores rather than generic tropical fish pellets, which typically contain too much plant filler.

Soft sinking pellets are generally preferred over hard-pressed varieties because axolotls lack true teeth and rely on a vacuum-suction feeding mechanism. A pellet that is too hard can be rejected entirely or cause minor oral irritation over time. The ideal pellet softens slightly after a minute or two of submersion while still holding its shape long enough to be consumed intact.

Portion control with pellets is straightforward once you establish a baseline. A common guideline is to offer as many pellets as the axolotl will consume within two to three minutes, then remove any uneaten food with a turkey baster or pipette. This approach prevents overfeeding while giving you a consistent measurement of your animal's appetite, which is one of the best early indicators of health.

Store pellets in a cool, dry location with the bag sealed tightly between feedings. Exposure to humidity causes pellets to soften prematurely, grow mold, or lose vitamin potency. If you purchase in bulk, consider dividing the supply into smaller sealed containers and refrigerating the portions you will not use within the next month.

Live & Frozen Prey Options

Earthworms — specifically nightcrawlers — are widely considered the single best food source for axolotls. They are nutritionally dense, readily available, inexpensive, and eagerly accepted by axolotls of all ages. A single nightcrawler can be cut into segments appropriate for the animal's size, and the wriggling motion triggers a strong feeding response. Purchase earthworms from bait shops or online suppliers that do not treat their stock with pesticides or chemical bedding.

Bloodworms are another popular option, available both live and frozen. They are particularly useful for juvenile axolotls that are too small for nightcrawlers. Frozen bloodworm cubes can be thawed in a small cup of tank water and dispensed with tweezers or a pipette. While bloodworms are a good supplemental food, they should not serve as the sole diet because they are relatively low in calcium and certain trace minerals compared to earthworms.

Brine shrimp, daphnia, and blackworms can round out the diet and provide variety, which helps ensure a broad spectrum of micronutrients. Live blackworms are especially valuable because they survive in the tank until consumed, reducing waste. However, always source live foods from reputable suppliers to avoid introducing parasites or disease into the aquarium. Quarantining live food in a separate container for a day or two before offering it to your axolotl is a reasonable precaution.

Frozen fish fillets or shrimp from the grocery store can be offered as an occasional treat, but they should never form the dietary foundation. These items are often processed with salt, preservatives, or glazing agents that are not ideal for axolotl health. If you do offer raw seafood, choose unseasoned, unglazed options and cut them into appropriately sized pieces that the axolotl can swallow without difficulty.

Treats & Supplements

Treats serve a dual purpose in axolotl care: they provide dietary variety and they can be used to build a feeding relationship with the animal. Small pieces of raw, unseasoned shrimp or a single waxworm offered by hand or with soft-tipped feeding tongs can encourage an axolotl to associate your presence with positive experiences, which reduces stress during tank maintenance.

Calcium supplementation is the most commonly needed addition to an axolotl's diet, especially for animals fed primarily on pellets or bloodworms. Dusting earthworm segments with a reptile-grade calcium powder before offering them is a simple method that most keepers find effective. Cuttlebone — the same product sold for birds — can also be placed in the tank, where it slowly dissolves and raises the ambient calcium level in the water.

Vitamin supplements formulated for amphibians can be used sparingly to address specific deficiencies, but they should not be a substitute for a varied, whole-food diet. Over-supplementation with fat-soluble vitamins like A and D can be toxic. If you suspect a nutritional deficiency, consult an exotic veterinarian before adding supplements to the diet.

Avoid using feeder fish as treats. Goldfish and rosy red minnows are commonly sold as feeders, but they carry a high risk of introducing parasites and bacterial infections into the axolotl's environment. Feeder fish also contain thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1 and can cause serious neurological problems with repeated exposure. The risks far outweigh any enrichment benefit.

Foods to Avoid

Processed human foods have no place in an axolotl's diet. Cooked meats, bread, dairy, fruits, and vegetables are all inappropriate and can cause digestive blockages, bacterial infections, or dangerous water contamination. Axolotls lack the enzymes needed to process cooked proteins and plant-based carbohydrates, and even small amounts of these foods can trigger gastrointestinal distress.

Feeder insects commonly used for reptiles — such as crickets, mealworms with hard chitin shells, and superworms — should be avoided or used with extreme caution. The rigid exoskeletons of these insects are difficult for axolotls to digest and can cause impaction, particularly in juveniles. If you choose to offer soft-bodied insects like waxworms, do so sparingly and only for animals large enough to swallow them safely.

Any food item containing copper, heavy metals, or chemical treatments is dangerous to axolotls. This includes wild-caught insects from areas treated with pesticides, earthworms collected from chemically fertilized lawns, and commercially raised feeder animals that have been medicated with copper-based antiparasitics. When in doubt about the sourcing of a live food item, err on the side of caution and choose a known-safe alternative.

Floating foods, including flake foods and floating pellets designed for tropical fish, are problematic even if the nutritional profile seems adequate. Axolotls that feed at the surface inevitably swallow air, which causes buoyancy syndrome — a condition where the animal floats involuntarily and cannot return to the bottom of the tank. Chronic air ingestion can stress the animal severely and may require veterinary intervention to resolve.

Feeding Schedule

Establishing a consistent feeding schedule helps regulate your axolotl's metabolism and makes it easier to detect changes in appetite that could signal illness. Juvenile axolotls under six inches in length should be fed once daily, offering an amount they can consume within two to three minutes. At this stage, rapid growth demands a steady caloric intake, and skipping meals can slow development.

Once an axolotl reaches its adult size of nine inches or more, feeding frequency should decrease to every two to three days. Adult axolotls have a slower metabolism than juveniles, and daily feeding at this stage almost always leads to obesity. A healthy adult axolotl should have a body width roughly equal to the width of its head — significantly wider suggests overfeeding.

Water temperature directly influences feeding frequency and digestion speed. At the lower end of the acceptable range (around 60 °F), metabolism slows considerably and the axolotl may refuse food or take longer to digest a meal. During warmer periods near 68 °F, appetite tends to increase. Adjust your feeding schedule seasonally if your tank temperature fluctuates, and never force food on an animal that is not showing interest.

Evening feeding tends to align best with the axolotl's natural behavior, as these animals are crepuscular and most active during low-light periods. Offering food shortly after the tank lights dim often produces the strongest feeding response. Remove any uneaten food within fifteen to twenty minutes to prevent decomposition and ammonia spikes, particularly in smaller tanks where water chemistry can shift rapidly.
