The pH probe is the most critical sensor because Mbuna live at the high end of the freshwater pH scale, and even modest drops can indicate a failing buffer system that will continue to deteriorate. Night vision or infrared capabilities extend your observation window into the dark hours when many interesting Mbuna behaviors occur. Fish that are subordinate and reclusive during the day often become bolder at night when dominant males relax their territorial patrols. Breeding behavior, including the mouth-brooding process, frequently occurs or becomes more visible during low-light periods. Dosing Pumps & Automation

For Mbuna tanks, where maintaining consistent alkaline water chemistry requires regular supplementation, a dosing pump removes the variability of manual dosing and ensures that buffer additions happen on time every time, even when the keeper is away. Peristaltic dosing pumps are the most common type used in freshwater aquariums.
