Mbuna cichlids are among the most territorial freshwater fish commonly kept in home aquariums, and tank size is the single most important factor in managing their aggression. A 55-gallon tank is the widely accepted minimum for a small colony of Mbuna, but experienced keepers almost universally recommend starting at 75 gallons or larger. The additional volume provides more territory for individual fish to claim, which directly reduces the frequency and severity of confrontations. Tanks under 55 gallons create pressure-cooker conditions where dominant fish can easily harass subordinates with no escape.

Tank dimensions matter as much as total volume. Mbuna are rock-dwelling fish that spend most of their time in the lower half of the water column, so a long, wide footprint is far more valuable than height. A standard 75-gallon tank measures approximately 48 by 18 inches at the base, which provides a usable territory map that allows multiple males to establish and defend separate zones. Tall, narrow tanks of the same volume compress the available floor space and intensify territorial disputes.

For keepers planning a mixed-species Mbuna community, which is the most common and visually rewarding approach, a 125-gallon or larger tank is the practical sweet spot. At this volume you can comfortably maintain 20 to 30 fish, which is important because Mbuna aggression is best managed through overstocking — a counterintuitive strategy where higher numbers of fish prevent any single individual from being singled out as a target. This approach only works in sufficiently large tanks with adequate filtration to handle the increased bioload.

Always consider the weight of a fully set up Mbuna tank before choosing its location. A 75-gallon aquarium with substrate, rock, water, and equipment can easily exceed 800 pounds. The floor must be able to support this weight without flexing, and the stand must be rated for the full load. Placing the tank against a load-bearing wall on a ground floor is the safest approach for larger setups.

Substrate & Rockwork

The substrate in a Mbuna tank serves both functional and aesthetic purposes. Crushed coral, aragonite sand, and cichlid-specific substrates are the preferred choices because they naturally buffer the water toward the alkaline pH that Mbuna require. Fine sand is favored by many keepers because Mbuna will sift it through their gills as they forage, which is a natural behavior that promotes mental stimulation and reduces stress. Avoid sharp-edged gravel or large pebbles, which can injure the mouths and gills of sifting fish.

Rockwork is not optional in a Mbuna tank — it is the defining structural element of the habitat. In Lake Malawi, Mbuna live among jumbled boulder fields where caves, crevices, and overhangs provide both shelter and territorial boundaries. Recreating this environment requires a significant investment in rock. Lace rock, limestone, Texas holey rock, and ocean rock are all popular choices because they are inert or mildly alkaline and provide plenty of surface texture for algae growth and visual interest.

When building rock structures, stability is the paramount concern. Mbuna are vigorous diggers that will excavate substrate from beneath and around rocks, potentially causing collapses that can crack the glass. Place the largest foundation rocks directly on the tank bottom glass before adding substrate, and use aquarium-safe silicone or rock stacking supports to secure upper layers. Never rely on gravity alone to hold a tall rock formation in place.

The arrangement of rockwork should create multiple distinct cave systems with separate entrances and exits. Each dominant male will claim a cave as the center of his territory, and providing more caves than there are males ensures that displaced fish always have somewhere to retreat. Line-of-sight breaks are equally important — rocks should be arranged so that a fish in one territory cannot see directly into another, which dramatically reduces posturing and chasing behavior.

Filtration Systems

Mbuna tanks demand robust filtration that can handle both the high bioload of an overstocked community and the constant particulate matter generated by digging and rock-grazing fish. Canister filters are the most popular choice among serious Mbuna keepers because they offer large media capacities, customizable media trays, and strong flow rates in a package that sits outside the tank. For a 75-gallon Mbuna setup, a canister rated for at least 100 gallons of turnover is a reasonable starting point, and many keepers run two canisters for redundancy and increased biological capacity.

Sump-based filtration systems are the gold standard for Mbuna tanks of 100 gallons and above. A sump provides a dedicated chamber for biological, mechanical, and chemical media, along with space for heaters, probes, and dosing equipment that would otherwise clutter the display tank. Sumps also increase total water volume, which improves parameter stability — a significant advantage when keeping fish that are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes.

Regardless of filter type, biological filtration capacity is the most critical metric for Mbuna. These fish produce substantial waste, and their alkaline water chemistry means that ammonia is more toxic at their preferred pH than it would be in an acidic environment. Ceramic bio-media, sintered glass rings, and bio-balls all provide surface area for beneficial bacteria colonies. Pack your filter with as much biological media as possible, using mechanical filtration primarily as a pre-filter to protect the bio-media from clogging.

Water flow within the tank should be moderate to strong but not turbulent. Mbuna in the wild inhabit areas with gentle to moderate current, and replicating this in the aquarium helps distribute heat evenly, keeps detritus suspended for mechanical filtration to capture, and encourages natural swimming behavior. Position filter outlets and supplemental powerheads to create a broad, even flow pattern rather than a single strong jet that pushes fish around.

Lighting & Photoperiod

Lighting in a Mbuna tank serves primarily to showcase the vivid coloration of the fish and to support the growth of beneficial algae on rockwork. Full-spectrum LED fixtures are the most practical choice for most keepers, offering energy efficiency, long lifespan, adjustable intensity, and color temperature control. A color temperature in the 6500K to 10000K range produces a crisp, daylight-like appearance that makes blue, yellow, and orange Mbuna colors pop without looking artificially tinted.

Photoperiod — the number of hours the light is on each day — should be consistent and controlled by a timer. Eight to ten hours of light per day is appropriate for most Mbuna setups. Longer photoperiods encourage excessive algae growth that can become difficult to manage, while shorter periods may not provide enough light for the natural biofilm that Mbuna graze on throughout the day. Consistency matters more than duration; abrupt changes in lighting schedule can stress fish and disrupt feeding patterns.

Dimmable fixtures with sunrise and sunset ramp features offer a meaningful quality-of-life improvement for Mbuna. Sudden transitions from dark to bright light and vice versa can startle fish and trigger panic responses that lead to collisions with rockwork and injuries. A gradual ramp-up over 15 to 30 minutes in the morning and a corresponding ramp-down in the evening mimics natural conditions and keeps the fish calm during transitions.

If you intend to keep live plants in a Mbuna tank — which is challenging but not impossible with hardy species like Anubias and Java Fern — lighting requirements increase. These plants need moderate light intensity at the substrate level to photosynthesize effectively, which may require a more powerful fixture or longer photoperiod. However, most dedicated Mbuna setups forgo live plants entirely in favor of rockwork and algae, which simplifies lighting requirements considerably.

Heating & Water Parameters

Mbuna originate from Lake Malawi in southeastern Africa, where water temperatures remain remarkably stable year-round between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Maintaining this temperature range in the aquarium requires a reliable heater — or ideally two heaters — sized appropriately for the tank volume. The general guideline is 3 to 5 watts per gallon, so a 75-gallon tank would need a heater or heaters totaling 225 to 375 watts. Using two smaller heaters rather than one large unit provides redundancy if one fails and distributes heat more evenly across the tank.

Beyond temperature, water chemistry is the defining parameter for Mbuna keeping. These fish require hard, alkaline water with a pH between 7.8 and 8.6, general hardness of 10 to 20 dGH, and carbonate hardness of 6 to 12 dKH. Many municipal water supplies in the United States are naturally soft and acidic, which means keepers may need to use buffering products or mineral additives to achieve and maintain appropriate parameters. Crushed coral substrate and limestone rockwork provide a passive buffering effect that helps stabilize pH between water changes.

Ammonia and nitrite must be maintained at zero at all times, while nitrate should be kept below 20 parts per million through regular water changes and efficient biological filtration. Mbuna are less tolerant of poor water quality than their hardy reputation might suggest — chronic exposure to elevated nitrates leads to suppressed immune function, faded coloration, and increased susceptibility to disease. Weekly water changes of 25 to 50 percent are standard practice for Mbuna tanks.

Invest in an accurate, reliable thermometer and test kit. Digital thermometers with external probes provide more precise readings than adhesive strip thermometers. Liquid reagent test kits are more accurate than test strips for monitoring pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Test water parameters at least weekly, and always test before and after water changes to ensure you are not introducing water that differs dramatically from the tank's established chemistry.

Multi-Species Tank Planning

One of the most rewarding aspects of keeping Mbuna is building a multi-species community that showcases the extraordinary color diversity of the group. Successful species mixing requires careful planning based on temperament compatibility, adult size, and — critically — color pattern. Mbuna males are intensely aggressive toward other males that share their color and pattern because they perceive them as rival conspecifics. The foundational rule of Mbuna stocking is to avoid combining species with similar coloration.

A well-planned Mbuna community typically includes four to six species with distinctly different color morphs — for example, a solid blue species, a yellow species, an orange-blotched variety, and a barred or striped species. Within each species, stocking at a ratio of one male to three or four females helps distribute aggression and reduces the relentless harassment that a single female would endure from an attentive male. This approach requires accurate sexing, which can be challenging with juvenile Mbuna and may require venting by an experienced keeper.

Overstocking is the counterintuitive key to managing Mbuna aggression in a community setting. A tank that appears full prevents any single dominant fish from establishing an absolute territory, because there are simply too many competitors to control. Target a stocking density of roughly one inch of adult fish per two gallons of water, adjusting based on filtration capacity and maintenance commitment. This strategy only works if filtration and water change routines can keep up with the elevated bioload.

Avoid mixing Mbuna with Haplochromis or Aulonocara species, which are open-water and sand-dwelling cichlids respectively. These groups have very different temperaments, and the hyperaggressive Mbuna will typically dominate, stress, and eventually injure or kill the more docile tankmates. Similarly, avoid combining Mbuna with small community fish like tetras, rasboras, or livebearers, which will be treated as food or targets. Mbuna do best in a dedicated biotope where every resident is built for the same level of social intensity.
