Every Mbuna keeper should own a comprehensive liquid reagent test kit that covers pH, high-range pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate at a minimum.

Liquid reagent kits are strongly preferred over paper test strips for Mbuna tanks. Strips provide only approximate readings and are notoriously unreliable at the high pH ranges where Mbuna live. A strip that reads accurately at pH 7.0 may be off by a full point or more at pH 8.4, which is the difference between acceptable and dangerous conditions. Liquid kits use chemical reagents that produce distinct color changes at each value, making it much easier to identify small but significant shifts in water chemistry.

Beyond the basics, a general hardness and carbonate hardness test kit is essential for Mbuna keeping. Digital pH meters offer convenience and precision for keepers who test frequently, but they require regular calibration with standard buffer solutions to maintain accuracy. A meter that has not been calibrated in months can drift significantly and give false confidence in dangerous water conditions. If you choose a digital meter, budget for calibration solution and commit to recalibrating at least monthly. Many experienced keepers use a digital meter for day-to-day checks and verify its accuracy periodically against a liquid reagent kit.

Water Treatment & Conditioning

Water conditioner is a non-negotiable accessory for any fishkeeper using municipal tap water. Chlorine and chloramine, which are standard disinfectants in most public water supplies, are acutely toxic to fish and will damage gill tissue on contact. A quality dechlorinator neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine instantly, making tap water safe for aquarium use. Treat every batch of new water before it enters the tank — there is no safe shortcut for this step.

Mbuna-specific water needs go beyond simple dechlorination. Because these fish require hard, alkaline water, keepers whose tap water is soft or neutral will need buffering products that raise pH, GH, and KH to appropriate levels. For keepers using reverse osmosis or distilled water — common in areas with very hard tap water, high nitrate municipal supplies, or heavy metal contamination — remineralizing salts are essential. Pure RO water has no mineral content, no buffering capacity, and is actually harmful to Mbuna because it destabilizes pH and provides none of the dissolved minerals these fish absorb through their gills and skin. A cichlid-specific remineralizer restores appropriate hardness and alkalinity while ensuring consistency between water changes.

Biological starter products containing live nitrifying bacteria can accelerate the cycling process in new tanks and help recover biological filtration after disruptions such as medication treatments, filter cleanings, or power outages. While these products are not a substitute for proper fishless cycling before adding livestock, they provide a meaningful boost to biological filtration capacity during the critical early weeks of a new setup. Choose products that are refrigerated or have a recent manufacture date, as bacterial viability declines over time on store shelves.

Maintenance Tools & Cleaning Equipment

A high-quality gravel vacuum is the workhorse of Mbuna tank maintenance. Weekly substrate cleaning removes accumulated waste, uneaten food, and organic debris that decompose into ammonia and nitrate. For Mbuna tanks with sand substrates, choose a vacuum with an adjustable flow rate or a wide-mouth siphon head that hovers above the sand rather than sucking it up. The technique is to hold the vacuum just above the surface and let the water current lift detritus while the heavier sand falls back into place.

Algae scrapers and magnetic glass cleaners keep the viewing panels clear without requiring you to plunge your hands into the tank for routine maintenance. Magnetic cleaners with strong rare-earth magnets can handle the coralline-like algae deposits that accumulate on Mbuna tank glass due to the hard, alkaline water chemistry. Choose a magnet rated for your glass thickness and keep the inner pad clean — trapped sand particles between the pad and glass will scratch the surface irreparably.

A dedicated set of aquarium-only buckets, hoses, and tools prevents cross-contamination from household chemicals. Never use a bucket that has held soap, cleaning products, or any chemical substance for aquarium water changes. Even trace residues of household cleaners can be lethal to fish. Label your aquarium buckets clearly and store them separately from household supplies. Five-gallon buckets with pour spouts and comfortable handles make water changes significantly less cumbersome.

Long-handled tongs and planting tools are invaluable for working inside a Mbuna tank without major disruption. Rearranging rocks, repositioning decorations, or removing debris from tight spaces between rock formations is much easier with purpose-built aquascaping tools than with your hands. These tools also reduce the stress on your fish, since a slim tool entering the tank is far less alarming than an entire arm displacing water and casting shadows.

Backup Power & Emergency Equipment

Power outages are a serious threat to Mbuna aquariums because they simultaneously disable filtration, heating, and aeration — the three systems that keep fish alive. A battery-operated air pump should be considered mandatory emergency equipment for any Mbuna keeper. When power fails, dissolved oxygen levels drop rapidly in a heavily stocked tank, and fish can suffocate within hours. A battery air pump with an airstone placed in the tank maintains oxygen exchange at the surface and provides basic water movement until power is restored.

Uninterruptible power supplies rated for aquarium equipment provide a higher level of protection for keepers who experience frequent outages or live in areas prone to severe weather. A UPS can keep a heater and air pump running for several hours and buys time to arrange a generator or alternative power source during extended outages. Size the UPS for the combined wattage of your most critical equipment — heater and air pump at minimum — and test it periodically to ensure the battery is holding its charge.

A portable battery-powered heater or heat packs designed for aquarium use can prevent dangerous temperature drops during winter power outages. Mbuna are tropical fish with no tolerance for prolonged cold exposure, and tank temperatures can plummet surprisingly fast in an unheated room. Wrapping the tank in blankets or towels provides insulation that slows heat loss, and floating sealed containers of warm water inside the tank can add a temporary heat boost in emergencies.

Keep an emergency kit assembled and accessible at all times. At minimum, this should include a battery air pump with spare batteries, a dechlorinator, a liquid test kit, a net, a clean bucket, and any medications your fish have needed in the past. Power outages have a tendency to coincide with other disruptions that make it difficult to run to the store, so having essential supplies on hand eliminates a layer of stress during an already tense situation.

Nets, Traps & Fish Handling

Catching Mbuna is notoriously difficult due to their speed, agility, and tendency to dive deep into rockwork when threatened. Standard aquarium nets work for routine tasks, but Mbuna often require a more strategic approach. Fine-mesh nets in a size appropriate for your fish — typically four to six inches — are preferred because they are less likely to snag on fins and scales. Coarse mesh can catch on the spiny dorsal rays that Mbuna erect when stressed, causing injury to the fish and damage to the net.

Fish traps are an invaluable accessory for Mbuna keepers who need to remove a specific fish from a heavily rocked tank. Dismantling an entire hardscape to chase one fish is stressful for every animal in the tank and can take hours. A clear acrylic trap baited with food can capture a target fish with minimal disruption to the colony. Place the trap in the tank and allow all the fish to become accustomed to feeding from it over several days before setting the trigger mechanism. Patience during this acclimation period dramatically improves catch rates.

Specimen containers and breeder boxes serve multiple purposes in a Mbuna setup. A clear container that hangs inside the tank or floats at the surface provides a temporary isolation space for injured fish, overly aggressive individuals, or holding females that need to release fry safely. These containers allow the isolated fish to remain in familiar water chemistry while being protected from or preventing harm to tankmates. Ensure the container has adequate water flow through perforations or mesh panels to maintain oxygen and temperature consistency.

When handling Mbuna, wet your hands or net thoroughly before making contact with the fish. Dry surfaces strip the protective mucus coating from fish skin, leaving them vulnerable to bacterial and fungal infections. Work quickly and calmly — prolonged chasing and handling stress fish far more than a brief, efficient capture. If you need to transport Mbuna between tanks, use an opaque container or bag to reduce visual stress during the move, and match the water temperature and chemistry between the source and destination to avoid shock.

Décor & Background Accessories

While rockwork forms the functional backbone of a Mbuna tank, complementary decorative accessories can enhance both the visual appeal and the environmental complexity of the setup. Tank backgrounds applied to the rear glass panel serve an important practical purpose beyond aesthetics — they eliminate reflections and visual disturbances from behind the tank that can stress territorial Mbuna into constant alert mode. A solid black or dark blue background is the most popular choice because it recedes visually and makes fish coloration appear more vivid by contrast.

Driftwood is used less frequently in Mbuna tanks than in community aquariums because it tends to lower pH as it leaches tannins — the opposite of what Mbuna need. However, certain dense, well-cured hardwoods release minimal tannins and can add textural contrast to a rock-dominated aquascape. If you choose to include driftwood, soak it in a separate container for several weeks until the water stops turning brown, and monitor tank pH closely after installation. Remove the piece immediately if you notice a downward pH trend that your buffering cannot compensate for.

Artificial plants made from silk or soft plastic can add visual depth and color to a Mbuna tank without the challenges of keeping live plants with destructive, digging fish. Choose plants with weighted bases that resist the excavation efforts of territorial males, and avoid any decorations with sharp edges, small detachable parts, or metallic components that could leach harmful substances. Silk plants attached to rock bases integrate naturally with the hardscape and provide additional sight breaks that help manage aggression.

Tank lids and covers are an often-overlooked essential accessory. Mbuna are capable of jumping, especially when startled, chased by a dominant fish, or during breeding displays. A secure-fitting lid with minimal gaps prevents fish from leaving the tank and also reduces evaporation, which concentrates dissolved minerals and can push hardness and salinity beyond acceptable levels. Glass canopies, mesh screen tops, and hinged plastic lids are all viable options, each with trade-offs in terms of light transmission, ventilation, and ease of access for feeding and maintenance.
