Space Requirements

Runner Ducks are one of the most active domestic duck breeds, and their upright posture and constant movement demand more living space than many keepers initially expect. As a general rule, each Runner Duck needs a minimum of four to six square feet of indoor shelter space and at least 15 square feet of outdoor run or yard area. These are minimums — larger spaces produce calmer, healthier, and more productive ducks with fewer behavioral issues like feather picking or aggression.

The outdoor area is where Runners will spend the majority of their waking hours, and it should be large enough to allow genuine foraging and exercise. Unlike heavier breeds that are content to lounge near their feed station, Runners patrol constantly, weaving through vegetation and covering surprising distances over the course of a day. A cramped run frustrates this natural behavior and leads to stress, muddy conditions, and rapid destruction of ground cover.

If you are keeping Runners primarily for garden pest control, they will need access to garden beds or lawn areas in addition to their dedicated enclosure. Rotational grazing systems, where ducks are moved between fenced sections of yard on a weekly basis, help prevent overgrazing and allow ground to recover. Portable fencing designed for poultry makes this approach practical even on smaller properties.

Height is less critical than floor space for ducks, but Runner Ducks stand taller than most breeds and the shelter entrance should be at least 24 inches high to allow comfortable entry and exit without forcing ducks to duck — a particular irony that nonetheless matters for reducing stress at lockup time.

Shelter & Coop Design

Unlike chickens, ducks do not roost on elevated bars, so their shelter design is fundamentally different from a standard chicken coop. A duck house should be a low, ground-level structure with a wide door or ramp for easy access. Runner Ducks are more nervous than many breeds and can panic when entering confined spaces, so a generous doorway — at least 14 inches wide and 24 inches tall — reduces bottlenecking and stress when the flock enters at dusk.

Ventilation is the single most important design element in a duck shelter. Ducks produce far more moisture than chickens through their droppings and respiration, and a poorly ventilated coop will quickly develop ammonia buildup, mold, and respiratory problems. Windows or vents near the roofline should provide continuous airflow without creating drafts at ground level where the ducks sleep. Hardware cloth over all openings keeps predators out while allowing air to circulate.

The shelter floor should be solid rather than wire, as duck feet are webbed and easily injured by wire flooring. Concrete, wood, or packed earth all work well as base materials. A thick layer of bedding — straw, pine shavings, or chopped hemp — should cover the floor and be replaced or refreshed regularly. The deep litter method, where fresh bedding is layered over soiled material and the entire bed is composted periodically, works well in duck houses and generates valuable garden compost.

Predator security is non-negotiable. The shelter must be fully enclosed at night with a lockable door. Hardware cloth with a half-inch mesh is far superior to chicken wire, which raccoons and weasels can tear through. The floor should be protected against digging predators either by a solid base, buried wire apron extending 12 inches outward from the walls, or a raised floor. Runner Ducks are particularly vulnerable to predation because their upright posture makes them slower to take evasive action compared to breeds with a lower center of gravity.

Bedding & Flooring

Choosing the right bedding material has a significant impact on flock health, maintenance workload, and odor management. Straw is the most traditional option and provides excellent insulation during cold months, but it can mat down and harbor mold if not replaced frequently. Long-cut straw is preferable to chopped because it creates a loftier bed that dries more effectively between cleanings.

Pine shavings are highly absorbent and widely available, making them a popular choice for duck keepers. Large flake shavings work best because fine sawdust can be inhaled and cause respiratory irritation. Never use cedar shavings, as the aromatic oils are toxic to waterfowl and can cause liver damage with prolonged exposure. Kiln-dried pine is ideal because the drying process reduces resinous compounds and eliminates insect larvae.

Chopped hemp bedding has gained popularity among duck keepers in recent years due to its exceptional absorbency — reportedly up to four times more absorbent than straw by weight. It also composts quickly and produces less dust than shavings. The primary drawback is cost, which is significantly higher than straw or pine in most markets. For keepers managing small backyard flocks where the volume of bedding needed is modest, hemp can be a worthwhile investment in reduced maintenance time.

Regardless of material, bedding should be kept dry. Ducks inevitably track water into their shelter, so positioning water sources well away from the sleeping area and providing a transition zone of gravel or paver stones between the water area and the shelter entrance helps reduce moisture intrusion. Wet bedding is the fastest route to bumblefoot infections, respiratory disease, and fly infestations.

Outdoor Runs & Fencing

The outdoor run is where Runner Ducks will spend most of their active hours, and its design should prioritize security, drainage, and enrichment. Welded wire fencing with openings no larger than two inches by four inches provides a solid barrier against most ground predators. The fence should be at least four feet tall — Runner Ducks rarely fly, but a determined duck can flap over a three-foot barrier if panicked, and the additional height also deters climbing predators.

Burying fence wire or laying a wire apron along the perimeter is essential for deterring digging predators such as foxes, dogs, and raccoons. An apron of hardware cloth extending 18 to 24 inches horizontally outward from the fence base, covered with soil or gravel, is more effective and easier to install than deeply buried fencing. If aerial predators like hawks or owls are a concern in your area, overhead netting or wire across the top of the run is the only reliable defense.

Drainage is a critical and frequently underestimated consideration. Ducks are messy with water by nature, and a flat, poorly drained run becomes a mud pit within days. Sloping the ground away from the shelter, installing French drains or gravel-filled channels, and using a base layer of coarse gravel or sand beneath the topsoil all improve drainage dramatically. Some keepers designate a specific area of the run as a splash zone with a gravel base and confine water features to that section.

Providing shade is essential, particularly in summer. Runner Ducks are susceptible to heat stress because their upright posture exposes more body surface to direct sun than breeds that sit low to the ground. Shade structures, large shrubs, or shade cloth stretched over a portion of the run give ducks a place to cool off during the hottest hours. Natural plantings also provide visual barriers that help nervous Runners feel more secure.

Climate Considerations

Runner Ducks are reasonably cold-hardy thanks to their dense waterproof plumage and insulating down layer, but they are not immune to extreme weather. In regions where winter temperatures regularly drop below zero degrees Fahrenheit, the shelter should be insulated or at least draft-free with a deep bedding layer for thermal mass. Avoid heating duck shelters with heat lamps, which pose a serious fire risk in the dusty, straw-filled environment of a coop. If supplemental warmth is absolutely necessary, radiant panel heaters mounted securely to the wall are a safer alternative.

Frostbite is a genuine risk for ducks in severe cold, particularly on their feet and bills. Keeping bedding dry and deep so ducks can tuck their feet into insulating material while resting is the most effective prevention. Providing unfrozen water throughout the day using heated water bases or insulated waterers ensures ducks can continue their essential bill-dipping behavior even in freezing conditions.

Heat is a greater threat to Runner Ducks than cold. Ducks lack sweat glands and cannot pant as efficiently as dogs, so they rely on access to water for thermoregulation. During heat waves, ensure ducks have access to shallow wading pools or misters, ample shade, and cold fresh water at all times. Moving feed times to the cooler morning and evening hours reduces metabolic heat generation during peak temperatures.

In wet climates, humidity management inside the shelter becomes paramount. Moisture promotes the growth of aspergillus mold, which causes a fatal respiratory infection called aspergillosis in waterfowl. Generous ventilation, frequent bedding changes, and avoiding the temptation to seal the shelter too tightly against rain are all important. The shelter should keep rain out while still allowing robust air exchange.

Water Features & Access

Runner Ducks need water access for drinking, bill cleaning, and bathing, but they do not require a pond or elaborate water feature to thrive. A sturdy, shallow tub or basin that allows ducks to submerge their heads and splash is sufficient for daily bathing needs. The water should be deep enough to cover the nostrils — at least four inches — so ducks can clear their nares of food particles and debris, which is essential for respiratory health.

Kiddie pools, rubber livestock tubs, and purpose-built duck tubs all work well as bathing stations. The key requirements are durability, easy drainage, and a manageable size for regular cleaning. Duck bathing water becomes filthy quickly and should be dumped and refilled daily at minimum. Positioning the bathing area over a gravel bed or on a slope that drains away from the shelter prevents the surrounding ground from becoming a permanent mud pit.

Drinking water must be available separately from bathing water and should be kept clean throughout the day. Nipple waterers and enclosed poultry drinkers reduce contamination compared to open bowls but must be designed for duck bills, which are wider and flatter than chicken beaks. Some nipple systems designed for chickens do not accommodate duck bills effectively, so look for waterers specifically rated for waterfowl use.

If your property includes a natural pond or stream, Runner Ducks will certainly enjoy access, but unfenced natural water carries predation risk from snapping turtles, mink, and other aquatic predators. Supervised pond time or a fenced pond area is safer than unmonitored access. Additionally, natural water sources may harbor parasites and bacteria that increase the disease burden on your flock, so regular health monitoring is important for ducks with pond access.
