Providing clean, accessible drinking water is the single most important daily task in duck keeping, and the right waterer makes a significant difference in both flock health and keeper workload. Runner Ducks need to submerge their entire bill and nostrils when drinking to flush food particles and debris from their nares, so waterers must be deep enough to accommodate this — at least three to four inches of water depth. Shallow chicken-style drinkers do not meet this requirement and can lead to clogged nostrils, eye infections, and respiratory problems.

Bell-style and trough-style drinkers designed for waterfowl are the most practical options for small to medium flocks. They hold a reasonable volume of water, refill automatically from a reservoir, and can be cleaned easily. For larger flocks, gravity-fed poultry drinkers with wide basins work well but should be elevated slightly on a platform or placed on a wire grate over a drain pan to reduce mud and bedding contamination.

Nipple watering systems offer the cleanest water delivery but must be selected carefully for duck compatibility. Standard poultry nipples designed for chickens may not provide adequate flow for the wider, flatter duck bill. Cup-style nipple systems, where a small cup fills when the duck activates the nipple, are a better fit for waterfowl and provide the submersion depth ducks need. These systems virtually eliminate water contamination and dramatically reduce the labor of daily water changes.

In freezing climates, heated water bases or submersible de-icers are essential accessories to keep drinking water available around the clock. Ducks will not eat if they cannot drink, so frozen water in winter means hungry, stressed birds. Heated bases designed for standard poultry founts are widely available and thermostatically controlled to activate only when temperatures drop below freezing, keeping energy costs manageable.

Feeders & Feed Storage

Duck feeders need to be robust, easy to clean, and designed to minimize waste. Runner Ducks eat with enthusiasm and considerable mess, scooping and flicking feed with their broad bills. Trough-style feeders with rolled edges reduce feed spillage compared to open dishes or flat pans. The trough should be wide enough for multiple ducks to eat simultaneously, as Runners are social feeders and become stressed when forced to compete for limited feeder access.

Hanging tube feeders are another effective option and have the advantage of keeping feed off the ground, which reduces contamination from droppings and bedding. Adjust the hanging height so the feeder lip is level with the duck's back when standing — too high forces an awkward neck position, too low invites scratching and spillage. Tube feeders with adjustable flow gates allow you to control the rate at which feed enters the tray, further reducing waste.

Feed storage is as important as the feeder itself. Commercial duck feed should be stored in airtight, rodent-proof containers in a cool, dry location out of direct sunlight. Metal garbage cans with tight-fitting lids have been the standard for decades and remain effective. Purpose-built feed bins with locking lids and wheels offer better convenience for larger quantities. Regardless of container type, label each bin with the feed type and purchase date, and practice first-in-first-out rotation to prevent old feed from sitting indefinitely.

Moisture is the enemy of stored feed. Even a small amount of condensation inside a storage container can trigger mold growth that produces aflatoxins, which are lethal to ducks at surprisingly low concentrations. If your storage area is prone to humidity, consider placing a food-safe desiccant packet inside the bin or lining the bottom with a layer of dry rice to absorb ambient moisture.

Nesting & Egg Collection

Runner Ducks are prolific layers, and providing proper nesting areas encourages consistent laying in accessible locations rather than random spots around the yard. Unlike chickens, most ducks prefer to lay on the ground rather than in elevated nest boxes. A simple nesting area can be created by placing a low-sided wooden or plastic box — roughly 14 by 14 inches — in a quiet corner of the shelter, filled with clean straw or shavings. Providing one nesting spot for every three to four hens is generally sufficient.

Runner Ducks tend to lay very early in the morning, often before dawn, so eggs should be collected first thing when the flock is released. Prompt collection reduces the chance of eggs being stepped on, soiled, or developing cracks. It also discourages broodiness in hens that might otherwise sit on accumulating clutches, though Runner Ducks are generally less broody than many heritage breeds.

Egg collection accessories include padded egg baskets, egg aprons with individual pockets, and washable egg cartons for storage. An egg apron is particularly useful for keepers who collect eggs while also performing morning chores, as it keeps both hands free. For keepers who sell eggs, a candling light is a worthwhile investment to check for hairline cracks, blood spots, or developing embryos before packaging.

Egg washing is a topic of ongoing debate among duck keepers. Unwashed eggs retain their natural bloom — a protective coating that seals the shell pores and extends shelf life without refrigeration. If eggs are visibly soiled, a light dry brushing or a quick rinse with water slightly warmer than the egg is preferable to cold water, which can draw bacteria through the shell pores. Eggs destined for sale must comply with local regulations regarding washing and refrigeration, which vary by jurisdiction.

Herding & Handling Gear

Runner Ducks were originally bred as herding ducks, and their responsiveness to guided movement is one of the breed's defining traits. For daily management — moving the flock from shelter to run, between grazing areas, or back into the coop at night — a lightweight herding stick or flag is the most useful tool. A simple dowel with a small flag or piece of fabric attached to the end extends your reach and visual presence, guiding ducks directionally without physical contact.

Portable poultry fencing, often marketed as electric netting or step-in fence systems, is invaluable for rotational grazing setups. These fences can be installed in minutes, moved to fresh ground as needed, and rolled up for storage. Electrified netting provides excellent predator deterrence while containing the flock. Non-electrified options work for containing ducks during supervised daytime grazing but should not be relied upon as nighttime predator protection.

For the occasions when individual ducks need to be caught for health checks, treatment, or transport, a poultry catch net with a padded rim is far safer and less stressful than hand-chasing. Runner Ducks are fast and agile, and chasing them causes extreme stress that can result in injury, heart failure in vulnerable birds, or long-term wariness of human handlers. A calm, slow approach with a net in a confined area is always the better method.

Transport carriers should be well-ventilated, secure, and appropriately sized. A standard medium dog crate works well for transporting two to three Runner Ducks to a veterinarian or show. Line the carrier floor with a non-slip mat or towel to prevent foot injuries during transit, and cover the carrier with a light cloth to reduce visual stimulation and calm the birds during travel.

Health & First Aid Supplies

Maintaining a duck-specific first aid kit is an essential part of responsible ownership and saves critical time during emergencies. The kit should include veterinary wound spray or antiseptic solution safe for avian use, self-adhesive bandage wrap, gauze pads, blunt-tipped scissors, tweezers, a digital thermometer, and a clean towel for restraining injured birds. Styptic powder or cornstarch for controlling minor bleeding from nail or bill injuries should also be included.

Bumblefoot is one of the most common health issues in domestic ducks, and the supplies to treat it should be on hand at all times. This includes a scalpel or sterile blade, drawing salve or poultice material, antimicrobial spray, non-stick wound pads, and cohesive wrap. Bumblefoot occurs when bacteria enter a small wound on the foot pad, forming an abscess that can become serious if untreated. Rough or wire flooring, wet bedding, and sharp objects in the run are primary risk factors that proper housing and maintenance help prevent.

External parasite control products formulated for poultry should be part of your supply rotation. Mite and lice infestations can spread rapidly through a flock, causing feather loss, skin irritation, anemia, and decreased egg production. Poultry dust or spray treatments designed for use on birds, along with coop and nesting area treatments, provide integrated control. Diatomaceous earth sprinkled in dust bathing areas offers a non-chemical preventive measure, though it must be food-grade and used in well-ventilated spaces to avoid respiratory irritation.

A relationship with an avian or farm-animal veterinarian should be established before an emergency arises. Not all veterinarians treat poultry, and finding one during a crisis wastes precious time. Keep your vet's contact information, along with the number of the nearest avian emergency clinic, posted visibly near your duck housing area. Some keepers also maintain a small stock of electrolyte powder for adding to drinking water during periods of heat stress, illness recovery, or transport.

Seasonal & Protective Gear

Seasonal gear needs for Runner Ducks vary significantly by climate but generally center on managing temperature extremes and protecting the flock from weather-related hazards. In winter, insulated waterer covers or heated water bases ensure continuous water access. Reflective insulation panels can be temporarily attached to the inside of coop walls to retain heat without reducing ventilation. Wind barriers made from straw bales, plywood panels, or commercial windbreak fabric shield the outdoor run from bitter winter winds while still allowing the flock access to fresh air and daylight.

In summer, shade cloth rated at 50 to 70 percent coverage provides sun protection over the run without creating a stifling enclosed environment. Misters attached to garden hoses create cooling stations that Runner Ducks use voluntarily during the hottest parts of the day. Frozen water bottles or ice blocks placed in shallow pools give ducks a cooling resource to huddle near. Monitor your flock closely during heat waves — open-mouth breathing, wing-spreading, and lethargy are signs of heat stress that require immediate intervention.

Predator deterrent accessories supplement the structural security of fencing and shelter. Solar-powered predator lights that flash intermittently overnight discourage nocturnal predators from approaching the coop area. Motion-activated sprinklers startle approaching animals and are effective against raccoons, foxes, and neighborhood dogs. Hardware cloth skirting around the base of enclosures and buried wire aprons address the threat of digging predators, and should be considered permanent infrastructure rather than optional accessories.

Duck diapers and harnesses exist for keepers who bring their Runner Ducks indoors for any period of time, whether for socialization, rehabilitation from injury, or simply because the duck has become a house pet. These garments are specialized and must be fitted carefully to avoid restricting movement or causing skin irritation under the wings. They require frequent changing — every two to three hours at minimum — and should be removed entirely whenever the duck is returned to its outdoor enclosure to allow normal preening and bathing behavior.
