Runner Ducks are among the most active domestic duck breeds, and their constant movement means they burn calories at a higher rate than heavier, more sedentary breeds. A well-balanced diet should provide adequate protein for muscle maintenance, calcium for eggshell production, and enough carbohydrates and fats to fuel their characteristic upright, fast-paced foraging style. Laying hens in particular need consistent nutritional support to sustain their impressive annual egg output without depleting their own body reserves.

Protein requirements shift throughout a Runner Duck's life. Ducklings need starter feed with around 18–20 percent protein for the first two to three weeks, after which it should taper to roughly 15–16 percent on a grower ration. Adult Runners doing heavy laying benefit from a layer feed containing 16–17 percent protein and at least 3 percent calcium. Drakes and non-laying ducks can be maintained on a slightly lower protein maintenance ration to avoid kidney stress.

Because Runners are prolific foragers, a significant portion of their nutrition can come from free-range grazing if your property supports it. They are exceptional at consuming slugs, snails, insects, and tender greens, which naturally supplements their commercial feed. However, free-range intake is unpredictable and seasonal, so a complete commercial waterfowl feed should always remain the dietary foundation. Relying solely on foraged food leads to inconsistent nutrition and can result in thin shells, feather loss, or weight fluctuation.

What to Look For

When selecting commercial feed, look specifically for products formulated for waterfowl rather than chickens. Duck-specific or all-flock feeds account for the higher niacin requirements that ducks have compared to chickens. A niacin deficiency in ducks can lead to leg problems, bowed legs, and failure to thrive, so this is not a minor distinction. If waterfowl-specific feed is unavailable in your area, you can supplement a general poultry feed with brewer's yeast sprinkled over the food at roughly one tablespoon per cup of feed.

Avoid feed that contains medicated additives intended for chickens. Many medicated chick starters contain amprolium or other coccidiostats at dosages calibrated for chickens, and ducks eat significantly more feed by weight than chickens of similar age. Overconsumption of medicated feed can cause toxicity in ducks. Always choose non-medicated formulations unless specifically directed by a veterinarian.

Pellet form is generally preferred over mash for Runner Ducks. Runners eat enthusiastically and somewhat messily, and pellets reduce waste compared to fine crumbles or mash, which tend to be scattered and lost. Pellets also dissolve well when ducks dip them in water before swallowing, which is a natural feeding behavior that should always be accommodated by providing water adjacent to feed stations.

Check ingredient lists for whole grains, plant-based protein sources, and mineral premixes that include calcium, phosphorus, and trace minerals. Avoid feeds that rely heavily on fillers or list vague ingredients like animal by-product meal without further specification. Quality feed costs more upfront but supports better health, stronger eggshells, and more consistent production.

Recommended Dry Feed

A commercial waterfowl layer pellet is the best daily staple for adult Runner Ducks in production. These pellets are formulated with the correct protein-to-calcium ratio and typically include niacin at levels appropriate for ducks. For mixed flocks that include both ducks and chickens, an all-flock pellet with supplemental niacin and a separate calcium source offered free-choice is a practical compromise.

Grower pellets bridge the gap between starter feed and layer rations and should be fed from roughly three weeks of age through the onset of laying, usually around 16 to 20 weeks. The lower protein in grower feed prevents the angel wing deformity that can result from excessively high protein during the rapid growth phase. Transitioning between feed types should be done gradually over the course of a week, mixing increasing proportions of the new feed with the old.

For Runners kept primarily as pets or garden foragers rather than layers, a maintenance waterfowl pellet with around 14 percent protein is sufficient. These ducks still benefit from the mineral balance of a formulated feed even if egg production is not a priority. Whole grains like wheat, oats, and barley can be scattered as a supplemental scratch feed to encourage natural foraging behavior, but they should not constitute more than 10 to 15 percent of the total diet because grains alone lack the vitamin and mineral profile ducks need.

Wet & Fresh Options

Fresh greens are a valuable addition to any Runner Duck's diet and can be offered daily. Chopped romaine lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, dandelion greens, and herbs like parsley and dill are all excellent choices. Floating greens in a shallow tub of water mimics natural foraging and keeps the ducks engaged while eating. Avoid iceberg lettuce, which has minimal nutritional value and can cause loose droppings in large quantities.

Runner Ducks also benefit from access to fresh vegetables such as peas, corn, shredded carrots, and cucumber. These can be offered as part of their daily routine or used as enrichment during warmer months when foraging opportunities may be reduced by heat. Peas in particular are a high-protein treat that most ducks find irresistible and can be offered frozen during hot weather for a cooling snack.

Wet mash can be prepared by soaking pellets in water until they soften into a porridge-like consistency. This is especially useful for older ducks with bill sensitivity, ducks recovering from illness, or during extremely cold weather when additional hydration is beneficial. Some keepers mix wet mash with finely chopped greens and a sprinkle of brewer's yeast to create a nutrient-dense meal. Always discard uneaten wet mash within a few hours to prevent mold and bacterial growth.

Treats & Supplements

Mealworms, both dried and live, are the quintessential duck treat and provide a protein boost that Runners especially appreciate during molting season or periods of heavy laying. Limit treats to no more than 10 percent of the overall diet to prevent nutritional imbalances. Black soldier fly larvae are another high-calcium, high-protein treat option that many keepers prefer because they are sustainably farmed and offer a superior calcium-to-phosphorus ratio compared to mealworms.

Calcium supplementation is critical for laying Runner Ducks. Crushed oyster shell offered in a separate free-choice container allows hens to self-regulate their calcium intake without forcing excess calcium on drakes or non-layers. Eggshells can be dried, crushed, and recycled as a calcium supplement, but they must be baked or microwaved first to eliminate any residual bacteria and to alter their appearance enough that ducks do not associate them with their own eggs.

Brewer's yeast remains the most important supplement for Runner Ducks because of its high niacin content. It also provides B-complex vitamins that support nervous system health and feather quality. Apple cider vinegar added to drinking water at a rate of one tablespoon per gallon is a popular supplemental practice among duck keepers, believed to support digestive health and discourage algae growth in waterers, though its benefits are anecdotal rather than clinically proven.

Grit is an often-overlooked but essential supplement. Ducks that forage on soil and gravel typically pick up enough grit naturally, but confined Runners need access to insoluble granite grit to properly grind food in their gizzards. Without grit, feed passes through the digestive system only partially broken down, reducing nutrient absorption.

Foods to Avoid

Bread is the most commonly offered and most harmful junk food given to ducks. It provides empty calories, causes excessive weight gain, contributes to malnutrition by displacing balanced feed, and can lead to a condition called angel wing in growing ducks. Crackers, chips, popcorn, and other processed human snacks fall into the same category and should never be offered.

Several common garden plants and foods are toxic to ducks. Avocado contains persin, which is toxic to most birds. Raw dried beans contain hemagglutinin, a compound that is lethal to ducks even in small quantities. Onions and garlic can cause hemolytic anemia in waterfowl when consumed in significant amounts. Nightshade family plants, including green potato skins and tomato leaves, contain solanine and should be kept out of reach.

Chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol are toxic to ducks, as they are to most companion and farm animals. Citrus fruits are generally avoided for ducks because they can interfere with calcium absorption and cause thin-shelled eggs in layers. Spinach, while not toxic, is high in oxalic acid, which also binds calcium, and should be offered only occasionally rather than as a dietary staple.

Moldy or spoiled feed is a serious health hazard. Aflatoxins produced by mold growth on grains and feed can cause liver damage and death in ducks. Store feed in airtight, rodent-proof containers in a cool, dry location, and discard any feed that shows signs of clumping, discoloration, or musty odor. Rotating stock on a first-in-first-out basis helps ensure freshness.

Feeding Schedule

Runner Ducks do well on a twice-daily feeding schedule with measured portions of pellets offered in the morning and evening. Free-choice feeding works for small backyard flocks but can lead to waste and attract rodents, so timed feeding is generally preferred. Each adult Runner Duck consumes roughly six to eight ounces of feed per day depending on the season, activity level, and whether the duck is laying.

Morning feeding should coincide with the flock being released from their nighttime enclosure. Ducks are most active and hungry in the early morning, and providing feed immediately encourages a consistent routine. Fresh water must always be available alongside feed, as ducks need to wash each mouthful of food down with water to prevent choking. Water containers should be deep enough for ducks to submerge their bills but not so deep that feed is dunked and wasted.

Evening feeding should occur one to two hours before the flock is secured for the night. This gives ducks time to eat, drink, and settle before being locked in. During shorter winter days, adjust the evening feeding time to ensure ducks are not going to roost hungry. Laying ducks that are not receiving adequate nutrition toward the end of the day may begin producing thinner shells or skip laying days.

Seasonal adjustments are important. In winter, Runner Ducks need slightly more feed to maintain body temperature, and adding cracked corn to the evening meal provides a calorie-dense energy source that generates heat during digestion. In summer, reduce calorie-dense supplements and increase access to fresh greens and water to prevent overheating. During molting periods, increase protein content temporarily by offering higher-protein treats or switching to a slightly higher-protein feed to support feather regrowth.
