Space Requirements

Rouen ducks are one of the larger domestic duck breeds, and their housing needs to reflect that. Each adult Rouen requires a minimum of four to six square feet of interior shelter space, though more is always better, particularly if the birds will be confined during poor weather or overnight lockdown periods. Overcrowding leads to stress, dirty conditions, and feather-picking behavior, so erring on the generous side when sizing a duck house pays dividends in flock health.

Outdoor run space is equally important and often overlooked. A minimum of ten to fifteen square feet per bird in the enclosed run gives Rouens enough room to move, forage, and engage in their characteristic waddling and dabbling without competing for space. Because Rouens are poor fliers due to their weight, fencing does not need to be especially tall, but it must be secure against ground-level predators.

Unlike chickens, ducks do not roost on elevated perches, so vertical space in the shelter is less critical than floor area. A duck house with a ceiling height of two to three feet is adequate for Rouens, though a taller structure is easier for the keeper to enter for cleaning. The floor plan should be open and free of internal obstacles that could trap or injure a duck moving in low light.

If your flock has access to a pond or swimming area, factor that into your overall space planning. Rouens are enthusiastic swimmers and a water feature, even a simple stock tank or kiddie pool, adds significant enrichment value. However, the area around any water feature will become muddy quickly, so drainage and footing in the surrounding zone need careful consideration during setup.

Shelters & Duck Houses

A purpose-built duck house differs from a chicken coop in several important ways, and understanding those differences prevents costly mistakes. Ducks do not need roosting bars, nesting boxes mounted off the ground, or pop doors at elevation. Instead, they need a ground-level shelter with a wide, low entrance that accommodates their body width and waddling gait. A doorway at least fourteen inches wide and twelve inches tall works well for Rouens.

Flooring is the most critical component of any duck shelter. Ducks produce far more moisture than chickens through both droppings and their habit of tracking water indoors. Solid floors made of wood, vinyl, or rubber are strongly preferred over wire mesh, which can injure duck feet. The floor should be slightly raised above ground level or set on a foundation that prevents water from pooling underneath, and it must be easy to clean since duck bedding will need changing frequently.

Ventilation is essential and non-negotiable. Ducks generate significant moisture from their respiration and wet habits, and a poorly ventilated shelter traps that humidity, leading to respiratory infections and ammonia buildup. Ventilation openings near the roofline allow moist air to escape while keeping drafts away from the ducks at floor level. Hardware cloth over ventilation openings keeps predators out while maintaining airflow.

Prefabricated duck houses are widely available and range from basic wooden structures to insulated designs with removable floors for easy cleaning. When evaluating a prefab unit, check that the construction materials can handle moisture exposure without warping or rotting. Marine-grade plywood, treated lumber, or recycled plastic panels all hold up better than standard construction-grade wood in the wet environment a duck house inevitably becomes.

Bedding & Substrate

Choosing the right bedding material for a Rouen duck house is less about comfort and more about moisture management. Ducks create wet conditions faster than almost any other domestic poultry, and bedding that cannot absorb and release moisture efficiently will turn the shelter into a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Pine shavings are the most popular choice among duck keepers for good reason: they absorb moisture well, are widely available, and break down into useful compost after use.

Straw is another common option and works well as a thick base layer, though it is less absorbent than shavings on its own. Many experienced Rouen keepers use a layered approach, placing straw as the bottom layer for insulation and cushioning, then topping it with pine shavings to handle surface moisture. This combination provides a comfortable, dry surface that holds up for several days between full changes in moderate weather.

Cedar shavings should be avoided entirely. The aromatic oils that make cedar pleasant to humans are irritating to duck respiratory systems and can cause liver damage with prolonged exposure. Similarly, newspaper and cardboard are poor choices because they become slippery when wet, creating a fall hazard that can lead to leg injuries in a heavy breed like the Rouen.

The deep litter method is a management strategy that works particularly well in duck housing. Rather than replacing all bedding at each change, fresh shavings or straw are layered on top of the existing material. The lower layers begin to compost in place, generating gentle warmth that benefits the birds in cooler weather. This method requires attention to moisture and ammonia levels, but when managed properly it reduces labor, saves bedding material, and produces excellent garden compost as a byproduct.

Water Access & Pool Setup

Water is not optional enrichment for Rouen ducks; it is a fundamental welfare requirement. Ducks need water deep enough to submerge their entire head to clean their eyes and nares, and Rouens in particular are happiest when they have access to water deep enough for full-body swimming. At minimum, provide a water container that allows bill submersion at all times, even if a full swimming area is not feasible in your setup.

For swimming, a rigid plastic kiddie pool is the most practical and affordable option for small Rouen flocks. These pools are easy to dump, scrub, and refill, which is important because ducks foul water rapidly. A pool that holds 50 to 100 gallons serves a small flock of three to five Rouens comfortably. Ramps or gently sloped entry points are essential, as Rouens are heavy enough that jumping in and out of a pool with steep sides can cause leg injuries over time.

Stock tanks made of galvanized metal or heavy-duty polyethylene are more durable alternatives that stand up to years of use. Some keepers install drain plugs at the bottom for easy water changes, and others connect the drain to garden irrigation lines so the nutrient-rich duck water serves double duty as fertilizer. Regardless of the container, plan for daily water changes during warm weather and every other day in cooler conditions.

Placement of the swimming area relative to the duck house matters more than most keepers initially expect. Ducks will track water, mud, and wet bedding everywhere they go, so positioning the pool at the far end of the run rather than adjacent to the shelter entrance helps keep the house drier. A gravel pad or paver area around the pool provides better footing and drainage than bare ground, which will turn to mud within days of regular duck traffic.

Climate Considerations

Rouen ducks are hardy birds that tolerate cold weather well thanks to their dense plumage and substantial body mass. In most temperate climates, an unheated but draft-free shelter is sufficient even during winter. The primary concern during cold months is not air temperature but windchill and moisture. A dry duck in a sheltered enclosure can handle temperatures well below freezing, but a wet duck exposed to wind can develop hypothermia quickly.

Insulation in the duck house is beneficial in regions that experience prolonged freezing temperatures. Rigid foam insulation panels covered with plywood protect the interior walls from moisture while providing thermal regulation. In extremely cold climates, some keepers add a safe, thermostatically controlled radiant heat panel mounted on the wall rather than heat lamps, which pose a significant fire risk in the dusty, bedding-filled environment of a duck house.

Heat stress is a greater concern for Rouens than cold, given their heavy build and dense feathering. In summer, shade over the run and swimming area is essential. Ventilation in the shelter should be maximized during warm months, and some keepers add misters or sprinklers to the outdoor area during extreme heat. Fresh, cool drinking water should be checked and replenished multiple times daily when temperatures climb above 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Predator pressure often increases seasonally, with spring and fall bringing more activity from raccoons, foxes, and raptors. Housing should be built to withstand these seasonal peaks, not just average conditions. Hardware cloth with a half-inch mesh is the standard for any opening, as chicken wire is easily torn by raccoons and other determined predators. Burying wire aprons twelve inches deep around the perimeter of the enclosure prevents digging predators from tunneling under the walls.

Multi-Duck & Mixed-Flock Setups

Rouen ducks are sociable animals that do best in groups of at least three. A single duck will become stressed and lonely, and even pairs can develop behavioral problems if one bird becomes dominant. When planning housing for multiple Rouens, scale your space calculations per bird and add an extra margin to reduce competition during feeding and sleeping. A flock of six Rouens, for example, should have at least 30 to 36 square feet of interior shelter space, though 40 to 50 square feet will produce a calmer, cleaner environment.

Mixed flocks that include both ducks and chickens are common on small homesteads, but they require careful planning. Ducks and chickens can share an outdoor run safely, but their shelter needs differ substantially. Chickens need roosting bars and elevated nest boxes; ducks need floor-level sleeping areas and wider doorways. The biggest conflict in shared housing is moisture: ducks will saturate bedding that chickens need dry. Separate sleeping quarters that share a common run is the most successful mixed-flock arrangement.

Drake-to-hen ratios matter significantly for the welfare of Rouen hens. A common guideline is one drake for every four to five hens, though some keepers maintain all-hen flocks to avoid breeding aggression entirely. Overbreeding by too many drakes causes feather loss, stress, and injury to hens, and in a confined housing situation with no escape routes, the problem is magnified. If you keep multiple drakes, monitor the hens for signs of excessive mating pressure and be prepared to separate aggressive individuals.

Introducing new ducks to an established Rouen flock should be done gradually. A temporary partition within the run that allows visual contact without physical access gives both groups time to acclimate. After several days of side-by-side living, supervised introductions in a neutral space help establish the new pecking order with less conflict. Adding new birds directly into the shelter at night, a technique that works well with chickens, is less reliable with ducks and may result in aggressive chasing the following morning.
