Handling Rouen ducks requires a specific technique that protects both the duck and the handler. The correct method is to approach calmly, secure the duck's body with both hands, and tuck it against your torso with the wings contained. Never pick up a duck by the neck, wings, or a single leg. A Rouen in full panic can scratch with its nails and beat its wings hard enough to bruise, so wearing a long-sleeved shirt during handling sessions is advisable.

Catch nets or poultry hooks designed for larger birds are useful tools for keepers who need to capture a specific duck in a flock without chasing it around the enclosure. A soft-mesh hoop net allows you to contain the target bird quickly, reducing stress for both that individual and the rest of the flock. Identifying individual ducks within a Rouen flock is important for health tracking, breeding records, and regulatory compliance in areas that require livestock registration. Leg bands are the most common identification method for domestic ducks. Spiral plastic bands in assorted colors allow keepers to visually identify individual birds at a distance, while numbered aluminum bands provide a permanent identification that does not fade or wear off over time.

Band sizing is critical for Rouens because an incorrectly sized band can cause serious leg injuries. A band that is too tight restricts circulation and can become embedded in the leg as the duck grows, while a band that is too loose slips off or catches on objects.
