Rouen ducks are a heavy domestic breed with nutritional demands that reflect their substantial frame and relatively sedentary disposition. Adults require a well-balanced waterfowl diet that delivers adequate protein for feather maintenance and enough calories to sustain their body mass without promoting excessive weight gain. Because Rouens are prone to obesity when overfed, portion control and nutrient density matter more for this breed than for lighter, more active duck varieties.

Protein requirements shift across the Rouen's life stages. Ducklings need a starter feed with roughly 18–20 percent protein during their first three weeks, tapering to around 15–16 percent as they transition to a grower formula. Adult Rouens do well on a maintenance diet of approximately 14–16 percent protein, though laying hens will need a bump in both protein and calcium during production periods. What to Look For

Chicken-specific feeds often contain medications such as amprolium that are unnecessary for ducks and can be harmful in the doses formulated for chickens. Grain size and pellet form matter for ducks more than most poultry keepers realize. Waterfowl feeds contain fats that can go rancid in heat and humidity, degrading both palatability and vitamin content. Purchase feed in quantities your flock will consume within four to six weeks and store it in airtight, rodent-proof containers in a cool, dry location.

Recommended Dry Food

A pelleted waterfowl maintenance feed is the foundation of most Rouen duck diets and the most practical option for keepers who want consistent nutrition without daily mixing. These feeds are typically formulated with a balanced protein content around 15 percent and include the niacin levels ducks require, removing the guesswork from supplementation. For small flock owners who cannot source dedicated waterfowl pellets locally, an unmedicated all-flock pellet designed for mixed poultry is a workable substitute when paired with a niacin supplement.

Whole and cracked grains can supplement a pelleted diet but should not replace it entirely. Wheat, oats, and barley are all good scratch grains for Rouens, and many keepers offer them as a late-afternoon supplement or scatter them in water to encourage natural foraging behavior. Corn is palatable and energy-dense, which makes it useful in cold weather for extra caloric support, but should be limited during warmer months to prevent weight gain in this already heavy breed.

Gamebird feeds in the 18–22 percent protein range are sometimes recommended for ducks, but for adult Rouens in a non-breeding, non-laying maintenance phase, that level of protein is excessive and can contribute to conditions like angel wing in young birds or kidney strain in adults. Reserve higher-protein formulas for ducklings in their starter phase or for hens entering a laying cycle, and step back down to a maintenance formula once the higher demand period has passed.

Fermented feed has gained popularity among duck keepers for good reason. Soaking pellets or whole grains in water for 24 to 48 hours activates beneficial bacteria that improve digestibility and nutrient absorption. Many Rouen owners report improved feather quality and more consistent egg production after switching to a partially fermented diet. The process is simple and adds virtually no cost, though fermented feed must be prepared fresh regularly to prevent mold growth.

Wet & Fresh Options

Rouen ducks thrive when their diet includes fresh greens and vegetables alongside their base feed. Leafy greens like romaine lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, and dandelion greens are excellent choices that provide vitamins, minerals, and hydration. Offering these greens floating in a tub of water turns mealtime into an enrichment activity, as Rouens will dabble and dip for floating leaves in a way that mirrors their natural foraging instincts.

Fresh vegetables such as peas, cucumber, zucchini, and shredded carrots are all safe and nutritious treats for Rouens. Peas are a particular favorite and are often recommended as a training reward because ducks find them irresistible. Vegetables should be chopped into manageable pieces, as ducks do not chew and instead swallow food in small gulps assisted by water. Hard vegetables like carrots are best grated or shredded rather than offered in large chunks.

Watermelon, blueberries, and other soft fruits make excellent occasional treats, though their sugar content means they should be offered in moderation. Rouen ducks can develop a taste for sweet foods and may begin refusing their regular feed if fruit is offered too frequently. A few times per week as a supplement, not a staple, is a reasonable guideline.

Mealworms, black soldier fly larvae, and other insect-based protein sources are valuable supplements, particularly during molting season when feather regrowth increases protein demands. Dried insects are convenient and shelf-stable, but live insects offer additional enrichment value as ducks actively chase and catch them. During molt, doubling the normal insect treat portion helps support the energy-intensive process of replacing an entire coat of feathers.

Treats & Supplements

Brewer's yeast is the single most important supplement for Rouen ducks and arguably for all domestic duck breeds. It provides a concentrated, bioavailable source of niacin that prevents the leg deformities and neurological issues associated with niacin deficiency. A standard recommendation is one tablespoon of brewer's yeast per cup of feed, mixed in daily. Nutritional yeast is an acceptable alternative, though not all products contain equivalent niacin levels, so checking the label is important.

Grit is a functional necessity rather than a treat, but it belongs in every Rouen duck's feeding station. Ducks lack teeth and rely on their gizzard to grind food, which requires a steady supply of small, hard particles. Insoluble granite grit should be available free-choice at all times, especially for ducks that eat whole grains, insects, or vegetation. Without adequate grit, feed passes through partially digested and the bird receives significantly less nutritional value from its food.

Oyster shell or a similar calcium supplement should be provided in a separate dish for laying hens. Unlike grit, which serves a mechanical purpose, calcium supplements are metabolized directly and used in eggshell formation. Offering calcium free-choice rather than mixed into the main feed allows each duck to self-regulate its intake, which is especially important in mixed flocks where drakes and non-laying hens do not need the additional calcium.

Apple cider vinegar is a popular supplement among duck keepers, typically added to drinking water at a ratio of one tablespoon per gallon. Proponents credit it with improved gut health, better feather condition, and natural parasite resistance. While scientific evidence for these claims in poultry is limited, the practice is generally considered safe at low concentrations and many experienced keepers include it as part of their regular routine.

Foods to Avoid

Certain common foods are toxic to ducks and must be kept out of reach entirely. Avocado tops the list, as both the flesh and pit contain persin, which can cause heart failure in birds. Onions and garlic in large quantities can damage red blood cells and lead to hemolytic anemia. Chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol are toxic to virtually all birds and should never be offered even in small amounts.

Bread is perhaps the most commonly fed and most harmful treat that well-meaning people offer ducks. While not acutely toxic, bread provides almost no nutritional value and fills ducks up, displacing the nutrient-rich foods they need. Chronic bread consumption leads to malnutrition, obesity, and a condition called angel wing in young ducks where the flight feathers develop improperly due to a high-carbohydrate, low-nutrient diet. Crackers, chips, popcorn, and other processed grain snacks carry the same risks.

Raw dried beans contain hemagglutinin, a compound that is highly toxic to birds. Even a small quantity of uncooked kidney beans or lima beans can be lethal. Cooked beans are safe in moderation, but the risk of accidental exposure to raw beans makes many keepers avoid them altogether. If beans are part of your duck's diet, ensure they have been thoroughly boiled before serving.

Medicated feeds designed for chickens pose a less obvious but equally serious risk. Many chicken feeds contain coccidiostats like amprolium, which ducks metabolize differently. Ducks eat significantly more feed per pound of body weight than chickens do, so even medications considered safe for chickens can reach harmful levels in a duck's system. Always verify that any poultry feed offered to Rouens is explicitly unmedicated or formulated to include ducks in its target species.

Feeding Schedule

Adult Rouen ducks do best on a twice-daily feeding schedule with meals offered in the morning and late afternoon. This structure gives them a reliable routine while leaving daylight hours available for foraging, grazing, and natural food-seeking behavior. Rouens that have access to pasture, a pond, or a garden area will supplement their feed with insects, slugs, grass, and aquatic plants throughout the day, so their measured feed portions should account for this additional intake.

Portion size depends on the individual duck's weight, activity level, and whether it is currently laying. A general starting point for an adult Rouen is roughly one-third to one-half pound of feed per day, split between the two meals. Laying hens will eat at the higher end of this range, while sedentary drakes may need slightly less to avoid excess weight gain. Monitoring body condition weekly by feeling the keel bone is a practical way to assess whether portions need adjusting.

Water must be available at all times during feeding, as ducks cannot swallow dry food safely. They alternate between bites of feed and sips of water to soften and wash food down, so placing the water source immediately adjacent to the feeder is important. The water container should be deep enough for the duck to submerge its entire bill, which helps clear feed from the nares and prevents blockages.

Ducklings require a different schedule than adults. For the first two weeks, starter feed should be available around the clock so ducklings can eat at will, as they grow at an extraordinary rate during this period. From two to eight weeks, three meals per day is usually sufficient. After eight weeks, most young Rouens can transition to the twice-daily adult schedule, with the protein content of their feed gradually reduced from starter to grower to maintenance levels over the following weeks.
