Caloric intake must be carefully calibrated to support dense musculature and a heavy skeletal frame without encouraging excess weight gain, which puts enormous strain on joints already predisposed to stress. Most adult Boerboels thrive on roughly 2,200 to 2,800 calories per day, though individual needs vary based on age, activity level, and metabolism.
Protein is the cornerstone of the Boerboel diet. A minimum of 24 to 28 percent protein from high-quality animal sources supports lean muscle maintenance and repair, which is especially important for a working breed that was originally developed to guard homesteads in South Africa. Look for formulas where a named animal protein appears as the first ingredient, and ideally the second as well. Avoid foods that rely heavily on plant-based protein concentrates to inflate their protein percentage without delivering the amino acid profile a giant breed requires.
Fat content should sit in the moderate range, typically between 12 and 16 percent for an adult Boerboel. Fat provides essential fatty acids and concentrated energy, but too much can contribute to obesity in a breed that is not always as active as smaller working dogs. Omega-3 fatty acids from marine sources are particularly valuable because they support joint health, reduce systemic inflammation, and contribute to a healthy coat. Given the Boerboel's susceptibility to hip and elbow dysplasia, anti-inflammatory dietary support from an early age is a wise investment.
Carbohydrates round out the macronutrient profile and should come from digestible, nutrient-dense sources such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, or oats rather than cheap fillers like corn gluten meal or wheat middlings. Fiber content matters too, as Boerboels can be prone to bloat and digestive sluggishness.
