Unlike fever, which is a regulated increase in the body's thermoregulatory set point driven by the immune system in response to infection or inflammation, hyperthermia occurs when heat gain overwhelms the body's capacity to dissipate heat. Normal body temperature in dogs ranges from approximately 101 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 to 39.2 degrees Celsius). Dogs regulate their body temperature primarily through panting, which promotes evaporative cooling from the respiratory tract, and to a lesser extent through vasodilation of blood vessels in the ears and paw pads. Unlike humans, dogs have very few sweat glands and cannot rely on perspiration as a primary cooling mechanism, making them more vulnerable to overheating in hot or humid environments.
Hyperthermia exists on a spectrum ranging from mild heat stress to severe heat stroke. Mild hyperthermia involves modest temperature elevation with minimal systemic effects, while heat stroke represents the most severe form, with body temperatures often exceeding 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41.1 degrees Celsius) and multi-organ dysfunction. Heat stroke is a true veterinary emergency that can progress to organ failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and death within hours if not treated promptly and aggressively.
The condition can develop rapidly, sometimes within minutes in high-risk situations such as a dog confined in a parked vehicle or engaging in strenuous exercise on a hot, humid day. Understanding the risk factors, recognizing the early signs, and knowing how to respond are essential for all dog owners, as timely intervention can mean the difference between full recovery and fatal outcome.
