In the wild, a Glossy Cockatoo spends the majority of its waking hours engaged in a single, deeply absorbing task: locating Casuarina trees, extracting cones, and methodically processing each cone to access the seeds inside. This natural behavior provides hours of fine-motor engagement, problem-solving, and sensory feedback every day. Remove that occupational framework, and a captive Glossy Cockatoo is left with enormous amounts of unstructured time that can lead to boredom, feather-destructive behavior, and stereotypic movements.
Feather plucking and over-preening are among the most common behavioral problems in captive cockatoos, and Glossy Cockatoos are not immune despite their generally placid nature. These behaviors often emerge not from acute stress but from chronic understimulation, a slow erosion of purpose that the bird may not outwardly display through vocalizations or agitation. No single toy or activity satisfies all of these needs, which is why variety and rotation are built into every effective enrichment plan.
The goal of enrichment is not simply to keep the bird busy but to allow it to express species-typical behaviors in a captive setting. When a Glossy Cockatoo methodically dismantles a wooden toy, shreds a palm frond, or works through a puzzle feeder, it is engaging the same neural pathways and motor skills it would use in the wild.
