A Glossy Cockatoo that appears calm and settled when its keeper is home may engage in repetitive pacing, feather chewing, or prolonged inactivity when alone, and these patterns are only detectable through unobtrusive monitoring.
Wi-Fi-enabled cameras with smartphone app integration are the most practical option for most keepers. Look for models that offer high-definition video at a minimum of 1080p resolution, infrared night vision for monitoring during dark sleep hours, and two-way audio that allows the keeper to speak to the bird remotely. The two-way audio feature is particularly useful for Glossy Cockatoos, which respond positively to the sound of a familiar voice and may be soothed by a brief verbal check-in during a long absence.
Camera placement requires thought. Mount the camera at a height and angle that captures the full interior of the cage or aviary without blind spots, particularly around food stations, primary perching areas, and the cage floor where a sick bird might end up. Time-stamped recordings are valuable when consulting with an avian veterinarian about behavioral concerns, as they provide objective documentation of the behavior's frequency, duration, and context. Some camera systems offer motion-triggered recording, which conserves storage by capturing only periods of activity and skipping the hours when the bird is resting motionless.
