The Glossy Cockatoo, Calyptorhynchus lathami, is the smallest of Australia's black cockatoos and one of the most diet-specialized parrots kept in aviculture. In the wild, these birds feed almost exclusively on the seeds of Casuarina and Allocasuarina trees, using their uniquely shaped lower mandible to crack open the woody cones and extract individual seeds with remarkable precision. This extreme dietary specialization makes the transition to a captive diet more challenging than it is for generalist parrot species, and it demands that keepers pay close attention to fat ratios, protein sources, and micronutrient balance.
Energy requirements for Glossy Cockatoos are moderate compared to larger cockatoo species. Their relatively calm demeanor and lower activity levels in captivity mean they are prone to weight gain if offered calorie-dense foods without restraint. A diet that provides roughly twelve to fifteen percent fat and fourteen to sixteen percent protein, built around a high-quality formulated pellet base supplemented with carefully chosen fresh foods, meets the metabolic needs of most healthy adults. Breeding birds and juveniles may require modest increases in both protein and fat during periods of heightened demand.
Calcium and phosphorus balance is a persistent concern for all black cockatoos in captivity. Glossy Cockatoos require a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of approximately two to one for proper bone density, eggshell formation in breeding hens, and neuromuscular function. Casuarina seeds in the wild naturally deliver minerals in ratios suited to the species, but a captive diet assembled from pellets, vegetables, and supplemental seeds rarely replicates that profile without deliberate adjustment. Regular veterinary blood work helps confirm whether dietary calcium is adequate or whether targeted supplementation is needed.
Vitamin A is another nutrient of particular importance. Black cockatoos as a group are susceptible to hypovitaminosis A, which in Glossy Cockatoos can manifest as respiratory infections, poor feather condition, and degradation of the mucosal lining of the crop and intestines. Beta-carotene-rich vegetables such as sweet potato, red bell pepper, and dark leafy greens should appear regularly in the daily fresh food offering, and pellet formulations with adequate preformed vitamin A or beta-carotene should be prioritized.
