Horizontal space matters more than vertical space for budgerigars. Unlike climbing parrots that scale cage walls vertically, budgies are natural fliers that move in quick horizontal bursts. A long, wide cage allows short flights between perches, which is critical for cardiovascular health, muscle tone, and mental wellbeing. Tall, narrow cages marketed as "parakeet homes" often provide impressive height but insufficient flight distance.

For pairs or small flocks, scale up proportionally. Concrete and mineral perches can serve a secondary role for beak and nail conditioning but should not be the primary resting perch, as their rough texture is too harsh for extended contact. Outdoor aviaries are popular in mild climates and can give budgies access to natural sunlight, fresh air, and environmental stimulation from wind, rain sounds, and passing wildlife. Climate & Environmental Control

Maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity around your budgie's enclosure is essential for respiratory health and feather condition. Budgerigars are comfortable in the same temperature range most humans prefer — roughly sixty-five to eighty degrees Fahrenheit — but they are far more sensitive to environmental hazards that humans tolerate without issue. Nonstick cookware fumes, scented candles, air fresheners, cigarette smoke, and aerosol sprays can all cause acute respiratory distress or death in birds. Lighting plays a major role in budgerigar health and behavior. Avoid ionizing air purifiers, which can produce ozone at levels harmful to avian respiratory systems.

Humidity between forty and sixty percent is generally ideal for budgerigars. Excessively dry air — common in heated homes during winter — can cause dry, flaky skin and brittle feathers. A deep clean of the entire cage should be performed monthly. This means disassembling the cage as much as possible, scrubbing every surface, inspecting for rust or wear, and replacing any perches or toys that show significant deterioration. Pay special attention to cage corners and joints where organic matter can build up in hard-to-reach crevices. If you soak cage components, use warm water with a few tablespoons of white vinegar rather than harsh chemical cleaners.

Keep a dedicated set of cleaning supplies for the bird area — separate sponges, brushes, and spray bottles that are not used with household chemicals.
