The Tentacled Snake (Erpeton tentaculatum) is viviparous, meaning females give birth to fully formed, free-swimming neonates rather than depositing eggs. A typical litter ranges from five to thirteen young, though larger, well-conditioned females occasionally produce slightly more. Parturition usually occurs over the course of several hours, with individual neonates delivered at irregular intervals. Each neonate is born enclosed in a thin, transparent membrane that it must rupture on its own within seconds of delivery, immediately beginning to swim and breathe at the water's surface. Keepers should observe this process without intervening, as healthy neonates are entirely capable of freeing themselves.
Newborn Tentacled Snakes measure approximately six to eight inches in total length and are remarkably slender, resembling thin, dark twigs floating in the water. The species' signature paired tentacle-like appendages on the rostrum are already visible at birth, though they are proportionally smaller than those of adults and may be pressed flat against the snout for the first day or two. Coloration in neonates mirrors the adult pattern of mottled brown, gray, and tan, providing immediate camouflage among aquatic vegetation and submerged debris. This cryptic appearance is the neonate's primary defense against predation in the wild and should be respected in captivity by providing ample visual cover.
Immediately following birth, the mother shows no parental investment and should be separated from her offspring as soon as parturition is confirmed complete. While Tentacled Snakes are not known to cannibalize their young under normal conditions, housing neonates with the significantly larger mother increases stress and makes individual health monitoring impossible. Transfer each neonate gently into a prepared rearing container using a soft, fine-mesh aquarium net rather than hands, as the delicate skin and small size of the neonates make manual handling risky at this stage.
The birthing tank should be inspected carefully after the mother is removed. Stillborn neonates, unfused embryonic membranes, and any organic debris should be removed promptly to prevent water quality deterioration. Ammonia and nitrite spikes are the most immediate threat to neonatal survival in the first twenty-four hours, and even brief exposure to elevated levels can cause gill-like skin irritation, lethargy, and death in animals this small. Performing a partial water change of twenty to thirty percent immediately after birth and again twelve hours later establishes a clean baseline for the critical first day.
