The Tentacled Snake (Erpeton tentaculatum) reaches full physical maturity between eighteen and thirty months of age, with most individuals attaining adult dimensions by the end of their second year. Adult males typically measure twenty to twenty-six inches in total length, while females are modestly larger, ranging from twenty-four to thirty-five inches. Body mass is relatively low for a snake of this length because the species has a laterally compressed, slender build adapted for an exclusively aquatic existence. A well-conditioned adult should have a smoothly rounded cross-section without visible ribs or spine, though it should never appear swollen or distended, which would indicate overfeeding or fluid retention.
The defining morphological feature of the adult Tentacled Snake is the pair of fleshy, scale-covered appendages projecting forward from the rostrum. These tentacles are unique among all living snake species and serve as highly sensitive mechanoreceptors that detect the hydrodynamic disturbances produced by moving fish. In adults, each tentacle measures approximately three to five millimeters in length and is semi-rigid, maintaining its forward-projecting orientation whether the snake is at rest or in its hunting posture. The tentacles are covered with sensory receptors that are structurally analogous to the lateral line system of fish, giving the snake an extraordinary ability to detect and predict prey movements in murky or dark water.
Adult coloration stabilizes during the prime years and remains consistent throughout the rest of the snake's life unless affected by disease or environmental stress. The two recognized color morphs — striped and blotched — are genetically determined and do not change with age, though the intensity and contrast of the patterning may fluctuate slightly with shedding cycles and water chemistry. Both morphs provide excellent camouflage in the species' native habitats of slow-moving rivers, ponds, rice paddies, and canal systems throughout Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. In captivity, the snake's muted earth tones blend effectively with natural aquascaping materials, making visual observation a rewarding challenge for dedicated keepers.
Sexual dimorphism in adult Tentacled Snakes is subtle but present. Beyond the size difference noted above, males tend to have proportionally longer and thicker tails relative to body length, reflecting the presence of the hemipenes housed at the tail base. Females in reproductive condition are noticeably heavier-bodied through the posterior third of the trunk, and experienced keepers can sometimes identify gravid females by the visible distension of the lower body. Definitive sex determination, however, requires probing by a qualified individual or veterinary ultrasound, as external cues alone are not fully reliable.
