Males tend to mature slightly earlier than females, with some males showing reproductive interest as early as fifteen months. Females typically require closer to two full years and should not be bred until they have reached a minimum total length of approximately twenty inches and a body weight that reflects robust, well-conditioned musculature without either emaciation or obesity. Breeding undersized or poorly conditioned females carries significant risks including stillborn litters, maternal exhaustion, and post-partum failure to recover.
Assessing breeding readiness in males involves observation of behavioral cues rather than physical measurements. A sexually mature male in breeding condition will show increased activity levels, particularly during the evening and nighttime hours, and may be observed swimming more actively than usual, exploring the enclosure perimeter, and tongue-flicking at an elevated rate. These behaviors intensify during and after the seasonal cooling period that triggers reproductive cycling. Males that remain entirely sedentary and show no behavioral change in response to cooling are either not yet mature or are not in breeding condition for that season and should not be paired with females.
Female readiness is assessed through a combination of body condition, size, and health history. A female intended for breeding should have completed at least one full annual cycle in captivity without significant health issues, should be feeding vigorously, shedding cleanly, and maintaining excellent body condition. Any recent illness, parasitic infection, or period of prolonged fasting disqualifies a female from breeding consideration until she has fully recovered and re-established consistent feeding and growth for a minimum of three months. Breeding places extraordinary metabolic demands on the female, and entering gestation in suboptimal condition is a recipe for complications.
Probe sexing by a qualified individual or veterinary ultrasound provides definitive sex determination for keepers who have not previously confirmed the sex of their animals. External visual cues — tail length and thickness relative to the body — provide suggestive but not definitive identification, and mistaking the sex of one or both animals results in wasted conditioning effort and, in the case of two males paired together, potential combat-related injuries, though overt aggression is rare in this species.
