The juvenile period of the Patagonian mara spans roughly from weaning at eight to ten weeks of age through the onset of sexual maturity at approximately eight months, though full skeletal growth continues until twelve to fourteen months. During this window the young mara undergoes a dramatic transformation from a compact, somewhat round-bodied pup into the lean, long-limbed form that defines the adult silhouette. Growth rates are most rapid between three and six months of age, when a healthy juvenile may gain 40 to 70 grams per day and add noticeable length to its hind limbs each week. Regular weigh-ins on a platform scale accurate to five grams, conducted at the same time each morning before the first meal, provide the most consistent tracking data.
The hind legs develop disproportionately during the juvenile phase, eventually growing to be significantly longer than the forelimbs and giving the adult mara its distinctive hare-like posture. This limb asymmetry is what enables the species' unique locomotion, which combines a walking gait at low speeds with a bounding gallop and a stiff-legged pronking behavior when alarmed. Juvenile maras begin practicing these gaits at around three months of age, and keepers will notice increasingly energetic sprinting and leaping sessions during the morning and late afternoon activity periods. Providing adequate space for these exercise bouts is not optional during this stage — restricted movement during the period of peak skeletal growth can lead to angular limb deformities and reduced bone density.
The permanent dentition is largely in place by four months of age in Patagonian maras. Like all hystricomorph rodents, maras possess continuously growing incisors that must be worn down through regular gnawing on fibrous material. The molars are also ever-growing, a characteristic shared with guinea pigs but absent in many other rodent families. Monitoring dental alignment during the juvenile period is important because malocclusion — a misalignment of the upper and lower teeth — can develop as the skull grows and reshapes. A mara with malocclusion will progressively lose the ability to chew effectively, leading to weight loss and eventual starvation if the condition is not addressed through veterinary dental filing.
The juvenile coat undergoes a subtle but important molt between four and six months of age, transitioning from the slightly softer, denser neonatal fur to the coarser guard hair and finer undercoat combination that characterizes the adult pelage. The distinctive coloring of the species — a grizzled grayish-brown dorsum, bright orange flanking on the sides, a white ventral surface, and a prominent white rump patch bordered by dark fur — becomes fully defined during this molt. Any patches of fur that fail to regrow, appear discolored, or show broken hair shafts warrant veterinary evaluation for dermatophytosis or ectoparasite infestation, both of which are more common in actively growing juveniles than in established adults.
