The estrous cycle averages approximately 24 to 28 days in length, though individual variation is common and cycle regularity may be influenced by photoperiod, nutritional status, and social environment. In their native Argentina, wild populations breed seasonally from August through December, corresponding to the austral spring and early summer, but captive maras exposed to consistent indoor lighting and temperature conditions often cycle year-round.
Estrus itself is relatively brief, lasting approximately four to eight hours, during which the female is receptive to the male. Behavioral indicators of approaching estrus include increased restlessness, more frequent scent-marking through urination on substrate and enclosure surfaces, and a noticeable change in the female's tolerance of the male's proximity. When fully receptive, the female adopts a characteristic lordosis posture, lowering her chest while elevating her hindquarters, and allows the male to mount. The brevity of the receptive window means that keepers who are intentionally breeding must ensure the pair is housed together continuously or the mating opportunity may be missed entirely.
The male Patagonian mara exhibits a distinctive courtship behavior known as enurination, in which he sprays a stream of urine toward the female in short, rhythmic bursts while walking alongside or behind her. While this behavior appears jarring to observers unfamiliar with the species, it is a normal component of the mating ritual that conveys information about the male's hormonal status and individual identity through chemical signals in the urine. The female typically responds by alternately moving away from and returning to the male, and repeated enurination bouts preceding a successful mount are standard.
Sexual maturity is reached at approximately eight months of age in both sexes, though most breeders recommend delaying first breeding until the female is at least twelve months old to allow for full skeletal development. Breeding a female whose growth plates have not yet closed increases the risk of dystocia, as the pelvic canal may not have reached its adult dimensions. Males can be fertile for the majority of their adult lifespan, and there is no well-defined upper age limit for male reproductive capability, though semen quality and mating vigor tend to decline in males over eight years of age.
