These early indicators are often subtle and easily overlooked: a slight decrease in nightly activity, longer daytime sleep periods, reduced enthusiasm for climbing to the highest points in the enclosure, and a gradual preference for lower resting spots that require less effort to reach. Recognizing these changes early allows the keeper to begin adapting husbandry practices proactively rather than reactively.
Physical changes become progressively more apparent as the genet moves further into its senior years. The sleek, densely marked coat that characterizes a healthy adult may become thinner, less lustrous, or develop a slightly coarser texture. Some senior genets develop small areas of fur thinning over the hips and along the spine where the underlying skin becomes more visible. Muscle mass decreases gradually, particularly along the hindquarters and the muscles that power the explosive leaping movements genets rely on for arboreal locomotion. The animal's overall body profile shifts from the taut, athletic silhouette of its prime years to a softer, less angular form. Weight may fluctuate in either direction, with some seniors trending toward gradual weight loss as metabolism slows while others gain weight as activity decreases.
Behavioral changes in the senior genet extend beyond simple activity reduction. Many aging genets become noticeably more tolerant of handling and may actually seek out human contact more frequently than they did during their independent adult years. This increased sociability likely reflects a combination of reduced defensive vigilance, accumulated positive associations with the keeper, and a genuine shift in comfort-seeking behavior. Conversely, some seniors become less tolerant of disruption to their routines and may react with uncharacteristic irritability when their environment is changed or their sleep is disturbed during the day. Understanding that these temperament shifts are normal age-related changes rather than signs of illness helps the keeper respond with patience and accommodation.
Establishing an increased veterinary monitoring schedule is the single most important proactive step a keeper can take when their genet enters the senior phase. The annual wellness examination that sufficed during the prime adult years should be increased to biannual visits, with each examination including comprehensive blood work, a thorough dental assessment, and careful evaluation of joint mobility, muscle condition, and organ function. Blood chemistry panels may reveal early changes in kidney or liver values that are amenable to dietary intervention if caught before clinical disease develops. The veterinarian should also evaluate the genet's body condition score at each visit and work with the keeper to adjust the nutritional program as the animal's metabolic needs evolve with age.
